The members of the Columbia Club met with Mrs. Frances KIngsley yesterday at her home in Webb street for ' an Important business meeting. Plarhs wera made for the coming year's meet ings and It was decided to hold the first social meeting of the year in three weeks. The club will continue to meet every two weeks during the winter and "enjoy cards. The membership of the club will remain the same as last year and Mrs. R. IL McHie will act as president and Mrs. W. F. Mashino as , secretary ARRIVES IN TEXAS. Perry Sheffield of May street, who left 'Hammond several days ago, has arrived " In Texas and Is enjoying his visit immensely. Davis in Plummer avenue and completed their plans for the entertainment on public day, when they have charge of he programe. Mrs. Davis is acting chairman in the absence of Mrs. Eugene Cooper who is visiting in Michigan. Vice President Julius Meyn. Secretary Thomas Blair. Prof. Learning wanted to see all those who could play some musical instrument. It is his aim to organize an orchestra as he had done for several years. A new tackling machine has been erected at the park to practice the men n ackling. ARE HEADED THIS WAY The report was received from St. Joseph, Mich., this morning that two colored men who were being held in the Jail . there succeeded in escaping and are now at large. It is believed they are headed towards Hammond and the police have been notified to effect their capture If possible One Is a man by the name of Wells. He Is five feet six Inches tall. Weighs 150 pounds and is 24 years old. The oth ers name is Washington and is five feet six inches tall, weighs 130 pounds and is also 24 years old. Robens, a switchman In Gib son, was struck by a car this morning which was being switched. It struck Robens in the hip, injuring him severe ly. He was taken to St. Margaret's hospital in Emmerling's ambulance where an examination was made to learn if ny bones were broken. MALT CREAMS WIN. Those looking as though they might go straight up are Sox fans. AFTER INDIAN SCALPS Chicago School Boys Are Pinched by Hammond Policeman. It Is a good thing for Wm. McAleer, Sim Cotton and some of the good old Indians that they dld'nt get out on tha streets today. Three school boys who live in the vic inity of 471 Hastings street, Chicago, became the victims of the wanderlust and decided to come out to Hammond where they could kill a few Indians. They did not find any Indians but they ran up against big Officer Borchert who wanted to know a thing or two about where they were going. They were unable to give a satisfactory an Swer and so they were taken to the police station. There the whereabouts of their par ents was learned and they were all sent back home after being on Indian trails for one day. There was just ten cents In the whole party and that would hardly have taken the boys to the wilds of Indiana. The boys who were arrested were Martin Mulaney, Elmer Mlnetts and Frank Fisher. The boys came Out on a street car and were returned to their homes by the same route. . "' ' NONE ATTENDED HENCE Rev. E. Snook Finds Him self Too Busy to Go to Presbytery Meeting. There are no representatives from Hammond at the fall meeting of the Logansport Presbytery which Is being held in the Presbyterian church In Montlcello today. Rev. J. E. Snook Is en gaged In work here which will make it impossible for him to attend. The first session was held last even ing, at which time there was a sermon by the moderator. Rev. H. B. Hostetter, This forenoon was given to business, and at noon dinner was served at the church, followed by a number of afterdinner speeches on various topics. The Presbytery will close this evening with two addresses, one by Rev. A. B. Smith of Rochester, on the C. E. movement and one on the "Church of Today" by Rev. J. B. Donaldson of LaPorte. CLUB MEETS TONIGHT Young Men's Republican Organization to Make Arrangements for Meeting There will be an Important meeting of the Young Men's Republican Club at the Superior Court House tonight. The meeting will be held for the purpose of making arrangements for the Watson meeting which Is to be held In this city on October third. The arrangements for this meeting will be in the hands of the Young Men's Republican Club and an effort will be made to make It a memorable one. It is very Important that the members of all committees be present and the work for the future will be outlined. The members of the club are very much gratified with the showing they made at Indiana Harbor when they went over there in a body and they expect to outdo themselves on this occasion of the Watson meeting. A meeting has been arranged for the executive committee at seven o'clock this evening or an hour before the reg ular meetting and such preliminary business as the club has to transact will be done then. FLASH FROM HUB CAUSES PRISONER'S ARREST. Deputy rronecotor Bremer Falga a Wayward BoardblU Jumper. This morning deputy prosecuting attorney August Bremer of Crown Point called up the Hammond police department and asked Chief Rlmbach to have a man by the name of John Burden, who was on the way to this city on an Erie train, arrested. Captain Austgen went to the depot and arrested the fellow. He was accused of stealing a check and beating his board bill, and was charged with petty larceny. The prisoner was turned over to Sheriff F. S. Carter. AT THE TOWLE OPERA HOUSE. Among this season's big successes, the most widely spoken of is the new Mlttenthal thriller, "The Life of an Actress," by Langdon McCormick. As the title denotes, It Is a play dealing with the theatrical profession a subject always of interest to theater-goers.
