CROWN POINT. : '-" Work Begun on Sewer. Work wat commenced last week on 1,800 feet of eewer for the Crown Brewing company on Goldsborough street. The brewery has to stand the entire expense of the sewer from their plant to the connecting mains on Main street. 10 inch pipes are being used. C W. Felcher of Creston,- who has withdrawn his name as candidate for sheriff, has secured the contract for the. work and has a force of men working on the job at present. " Mrs. W. A. Seheddell has issued invitations for a party on Tuesday evening, at her hon.e on Grant street. The function is given In honor of her sister, Mrs. Upham of Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Bery Clark of Wheatfield, Ind. Cards will be the feature of the evening's entertainment. Mrs. Borchert, a, widow lady living on ,West Joliet street, died at her home 'Sunday afternoon after a lingering Illis ess. Will Arbitrate Difficulties. Tomorrow is the day which has been elected by the laborers -and -the con tractors to arbitrate their difficulties. Committees on both sides have been ppolnted to take the matter in hand and if they do not succeed in coming to any settlement an arbitrator will be appinted. The two committees will meet at 2 o'clock In the club rooms of the Gary hotel. -The business men are all anxious to " have the matter definitely ettled as they have felt the effects of the strike as well as those who have been involved.- The laborers have been working during ' the past week, by agreement, they receiving during that time all of the concessions which they asked for during the lockout. Mr. Allan McCorkle went to Chicago last night by way of the trolley lines. It took him nearly an hour ond a half to get from Gary to Hammond and the time to Chicago has not yet been learned. The stockholders of the Lake County Directory Company met Saturday afternoon in the offices of McCracken & Fitzgerald. The report of the men in the field was heard, and they announced that the census of the towns of Lowell and. Crown Point was taken and that a large part of the rural. district had been covered. The work is progressing very atlsfactorlly and It is expected that the entire book will be completed In two months. - The first musicam comedy ever given In Gary was staged last night at the Gary theater when "Jolly American Girls" came to Gary for a one night stand. The show proved to be a great drawing card ana 'the house was packed to the doors. The show was fairly good and pleased the big audience. For one week beginning this evening, Elwood, the hypnotic wonder. will.be staged In the Einzenhof hall. The repu tation of Elwood preceded him as he is said to be one of the finest in the country. WHITING NEWS Department Called Out The fire department was called out Saturday evening by a box car on the Lake Shore being on fire. The car was loaded with merchandise, which but for the ' ready response of the depart ment, - would have been destroyed. The senior class of the high school formed a party Saturday evening and charlvarled Mr. and Mrs. Alexander M. Hamilton at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. M. Miller of Sheridan avenue.
