CROWN POINT NEWS Hold Weekly Meeting. ' The Center Township Republican vlub held its weekly meeting last evening, and a good attendance was present Plans for the conducting of the local campaign were discussed and much important business was transacted. The club will henceforth make an effort to secure the services and help of every voter in Center township to aid them in conducting the campaign and an invitation and welcome is extended to every voter and especially the young voters, to attend these meetings. Eig things, which are yet in embryo, that will cut a big figure in piling up a big republican majority this fall are now in progress and will be annoi'ced as soon as possible. The Crown Point Gun club held its weekly shoot yesterday and a recordbreaking attendance of the members to participate in the afternoon's sport wa3 reported. Some remarkably high scoring was made and if the members are able to shoot as well in the coming county championship shoot as they did yesterday, they will stand a good show of winning the cup. Tha following are some of the scores made out of a possible twenty-five birds: Fobs, 24; Youche, 23; Horst, 23; Swartz, 23; Hoffman, 17; Haberzetyl, 18; StuhSmacher, 17; Zlrkle, 17. The funeral of Dr. Cook, who died Thursday morning from paralysis, occurred at the home on Main street at 1 o'clock today. The services were conducted-by Rev. T. H. Ball and Rev. Dunlavy of the Methodist church. The remains-were buried in the Crown Point cemetery. It is said that the Cook family will return to Chicago and live with a brother of the deceased. Mrs. , Claude Allman delightfully entertained a party of her lady friends last evening at a-dinner and card party, given inihonor of Mrs. Clark of "Wheatfield. Mdelightful time is reported by those wlio attended the function. Mrs. Clark is making a two weeks' visit with relatives here and a series of parties will beigiven in her honor. Manager BJrank Keeney of the Crown Point Electrfc; company is stationed at Lowell these .days, superintending the work being dome by the plant's workmen who have1 commenced operations in supplying Lowell with electric power and light fsom the local station. While ejecting upoleon Thursday Mr. Kenney .had his foot badly lacerated by being .spiked with the pole while it was dropping Into the ground. The injury was very painful and will keep Mr. Kenney from his duties for some days. Many of ova people are planning to go to Valparaiso tomorrow to witness the ball games between Lowell and Valpo. Cro-wn Pointers have taken a great interest in these games and they are usually closely contested, and such a good article of the national game is given that they are well worth going the distance to see. The social season has begun in Crown Point and numerous parties herald the event. Club life has not stated as yet, but by the end of the month it is expected they will be in full swing, as their year books show their -meetings to commence about that tfme. Politics aroundt Crown Point are getting quite lively and the henchmen of the different parties are beginning to work over time. From now until election day there will be something doing all around the circle -and the poor candidate will have to figure where his Bleep Is coming in. ROBERTSDALE. Mayor Becker and' the board of public works, were here 'Thursday making preparations to have the fire station raised and an addition built on the police department - L. Martz of the fire department sjent Thursday visiting In Hammond. Mra. Frank Snyder returned to her home in St. Louis, Mo., after a pleasant visit with her mother, Mrs. Mary Hunter, of Indiana boulevard. Quite a number from here attended the K. of P. lodge in Gary Wednesday evening. Mrs. N. G. Phillips of Chicago was th,e guest of her daughter, Mrs William Rought of Cleveland avenue Thursday. Mrs. Henry Soltwedel of Hammond spent the day with Mrs. John Soltwedel of Harrison avenue. Fred Klemm of Indiana boulevard has accepted the position as teacher in the German Lutlueran school in place of Mr. Lutz who resigned the position and has moved to Hammond. Mrs. J. Sundeen of Harrison avenue, who have been seriously ill with typhoid fever, is improving slowly. Henry Eggers. of Roberts avenue transacted business in Hammond Thursday. u Mes dames. The band which was organized some time ago, by Robertsdale and "Whiting members of the Masonic lodge, played for the first time "Wednesday evening, during the initiatory ceremonies of the order. The music was well rendered and was thoroughly appreciated by those present The band consists of twenty-four pieces. George Hayes of Whiting is their leader. Carl Beisen and "Wilbur Butcher of Pearl street, "saw "As Told in the Hills" at the Calumet theater Thursday evening. Mrs. A. Tipton of Englewood, was the guest of her sister, Mrs. J. A. Judson of Cleveland avenue Thursday. Mrs. Margaret Buehler returned home after spending a few days visiting Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schaaf Jr., at their summer home in LaPorte, Ind. Mrs. Henry Ehlers of Roberts avenue was a South Chicago visitor Thursday. Miss Ethel Jewett of Indiana boulevard, saw "The Montana Limited" at the Calumet theater "Wednesday evening. He means to enforce the tru ancy law here, which requires that all children must attend school from their seventh to their fifteenth birthday. Attorney Fred Seabright of the Minnesota block, will erect In the near future oa his property on Tyler street, two new houses, "the plans for which will be ordered at once. The residences will be two-story frame, and will be as good as any on the west side. Just as soon as the plans are completed the work will, start as Mr. Seabright believes that there will be a great demand for the buildings this spring. Mr. Floyd, who has been for the past two months In Three Rivers, Mich., employed in the contracting business has returned to Gary. Oliver Holmes spent the day in Chi cago on business. Howard Chambers has resigned his position with the Gary and Interurban railway company as conductor. The school board which roet last decided to make an inspection of the public schools of Gary some time dur ing the latter part of next week. This will be the first inspection of the present school year. A large number of leading Gary republicans will go to Indiana Harbor where they will hear Senator Hemenway open the campaign in that city. A number of them have received invi tations to the banquet which will be held in the South Bay hotel previous to the big rally. It is expected that about fifty of the local politicians will go to the Harbor tonight Judge Huber spent the day in Chi cago today on business. This evening he will stop at Indiana Harbor where he will attend the republican rally. Rev. A. T. Briggs, who has recently been appointed district superintendent of the Hammond district will deliver his first sermon in-the Methodist church tonight. Rev. Briggs recently came to this community from Attica, where he has been the district superintendent of that district The fixtures for the new Building & Loan association which was recently formed In Gary, are expected to arrive the first of next week and they will be installed at once in their offices in the Brennau block. The company ex pects to start operations some time next week. Messrs. Kauffman and "Wolf, propri etors of the Lion store, one of the larg est department stores in this part of the state, were in Gary yesterday as he guests of Oliver Holmes. Mr. Holmes took them through the steel mills and they were shown every detalal of the plant The mills made a great Im pression on the Hammond merchants. Henry Caugherty, an old resident of this place, is very low. He is suffering from a cencer on his face. LANSING. Another robbery was attempted last night near Hottlnger's in Oak Glen This time the burglar was caught and taken to the lockup in Lansing. Mr. and Mrs. Ruff and family expect to move to Arkansas in the near fu ture. Next Wednesday they will auc tion off their property, and then Mr, Ruff expects to go to Arkansas in order to build a house. Mrs. Barco was a Hammond visitor today. . - BLACK OAK. A certain Valparaiso boy about four teen years of age, Thursday evening led an old horse which evidently had not had a square meal for some time, Into a pasture in the south part of town belonging to Gus Storck without con sulting him in the matter. When morn ing came Mr. Storck was informed by an officer that he was not supposed to be conducting a burying ground within the city limits and must care for the. horse which, being too weak to stand and eat, had fallen in a heap and was starving to death for lack of strength to eat the grass around it. Mr. Storck was obliged to foot the bill for the taking the animal to the bone yard. Hamilton Baker of Sugar Loaf, has sold his home at 953 West street to G. W. Doty, who expects to take posses sion about Oct 10, after which he will make a number of improvements to the place. Mr. and Mrs. Baker may go to Fort Wayne to make their future home. . Sam Parks suffered a stroke of ap poplexy Wednesday evening and died yesterday noon without regaining con sciousness. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon. Clarence Kreiger expects to have the grand opening of his new moving picture show, the "Lyric Nlckelodean" in the Moran building on West Main street Saturday evening. The show room has a raised floor and Is equipped with 159 opera chairs. Thieves entered the home of Andrew Melin, on Swede avenue, Thursday night, but didn't get away with any plunder. Mr. Melin heard the fellows and got out of bed to capture them, but they rah into the pantry and closing the door, pushed the refrigerator against it and made their escape through a window before Mr. Melin could get the door open. Sergeant, Clay Collins brought his children, Milton and Ruth, back from Morocco, Ind., with him.- The children will attend the Whiting schools the coming year and will live with their grandmother, Mrs. Johnson, on One Hundred and Nineteenth street The L. L. S. & E. ' Considerable trouble was caused yes-i terday by a C. L. S. & E. engine being derailed ta the intersection of their tracks with the L. S. & M. S. It was several hours before the men were abie to bet the engine back on the tracks and as a rsult several through trains on the L. S. & M. S. were delayed. The Methodists of Whiting will be given the opportunity of hearing the newly appointed district superintend ent, Rev. A. T. Briggs, formerly of the church at Attica, 111. Rev. jtirlggs will preach at the church at 7:30 o'colck to morrow evening. Mr. and Mrs. J. McGaff moved today from 117 Sheridan avenue to the Slucum house in Magoun avenue. East Chi cago. Mr. McGaff is superintendent of the Republic. Iron and Steel Company in East Chicago and it is a source of much regret to learn that the family left Whiting. Miss Hazel OTIara, who has been vis iting her cousin. Miss Helen O'Hara of Cleveland avenue and also relatives in South Chicago, has returned to her home in Cleveland, O. Miss Boss, who has been visiting with relatives in Michigan and who is en route to Arkansas, where she conducts a mission, stopped off here for a short visit with her niece, Mrs. Charles Dyer.' Miss Boss has recently returned from India, where she served as a missionary fro several years. Miss Hazel Moore is attending the evening session of the Metropolitan Business College at Chicago. Mrs. Harrison Burns of Ohio avenue is entertaining her mothter, Mrs. Westfall, of Michigan City. The regular meeting night of the White Eagles, has been-changed from Wednesday to Saturday. The first meeting which will be held tonight is a very important one. Mrs. George Winslow most delightfully entertained several young ladies at her home in Central avenue and One Hundred and Eighteenth street Thursday night The event was in honor of Mrs. Wlnslow's sl6ter. Miss Sadie Wilkinson, who has been visiting here bue who left "yesterday for her home in South Bend. The evening was one of unusual merriment, several musical numbers being enjoyed, as was also two unique contests. The favors for the guessing contest which were beautiful paintings, the work of Miss Wllklnson,were awarded to Miss Ellen Stover and Miss Nellie McTIgue. Refreshments consisting of ice cream and cake., concluded the evenig's pleasure and the guests departing were of the one opinion that Mrs. Winslow and Miss Wilkinson wer royal entertainers. Those present were Misses Ellen, Anna and Katherlne Stover, Gertrude Welsby, Irma Krout, Dora Bremer, Nellie McTigue, Delia Prest, Hazel Moore and Florence Stewart Mrs. George Winslow accompanied her sister.
