the entire dav. was unfinished at 6
o'clock last nigrht and was continued until 9 o'clock today. Throughout the afternoon session, when the sensation had spread about the city, the courtroom was filled with interested spectators, mostly lawyers. Nothing of this character has ever stirred up a greater feeling than the present regrettable Incident. The people of Gary seemed anxious to have the charges sifted to the bottom and their wish was fully gratified. Many and varied are the opinions of the innocence or guilt of the accused officer, hut all arc demand
ing justice, whichever party has been wronged. In a statement yesterday afternoon, j
Attorney X. A. Beck stated that he will ask for a grand jury investigation of
the charges against Juric, no matter 1 what may be the decision of the court today in the matter of the provocation charge. It seems therefore that the i end of the trouble is a long way off. Jl'ItlC IHOMKS CHARGES. i As to Juric. he sweepingly denies 1
having ever accepted or demanded an extortion from Soloman. He says that he was only in the grocery twice since he has been an officer, and that Is when he arrested Adolph Markowitch, the brother-in-law of the groceryman, for horse stealing, and yesterday afternoon. Juric is confident that he will bo vindicated and Chief Martin backs him up. The accused policeman is a Hungarian and has always been considered a competent man and especially valuable because of the fact that he Is a linguist of considerable ability.
