Many people, and many of them chil dren, have been made very sick con

place the plant is extremely dirty, the
water which he used is surface wate

the materials.
Mr. Rosen has been warned to put his place in better shape or he will be put out of business. He promised, as he was paying his fine, to secure a new location for the manufacture of soft drinks and to secure better water. This water which he has been using for his own drinks has also been sold to the saloonkeepers for mineral water at the usual price. The bottles that
the product is put In were improperly cleaned and the corks were old ones, used many times oven

The box car mystery which developed
in South Chicago yesterday, in which
an unidentified man was found dead
in an Illinois Central box car at Ninetieth street, remains today without any
further light shed on the deed. That
the man who was found dead in the
car was robbed for his money and that
he was a man of good family could be easily detected from the shape in which
the remains were left.

-Elsie Nelson, a three-hundred and

had absolute confidence in the quality of the booze dispensed in that town she proceeded to load up on the same.
Now, loading up Elsie is no ' small
matter. As soon as the stock ran out
in one saloon she changed her patron

Steel Mills Will be Thrown
Open to the Lake County Farmers. Tomorrow the Gary steel mills will
have open house to residents of Lake county, and all wishing to see the
sights of the wonderful creation will
have one of the few opportunities to gratify their desire. The works will be thrown open to the people and they will
be taken through and shown the sights
by competent guides which will be provided for the occasion. Sam Wood.s
a farmer living in the south end of the
county, Is the originator of the Idea, and has made the arrangements for
the special day.
It is hard to estimate the number of persons who will take advantage of this opportunity, but it is thought that
they will likely be composed largely of farmers. They will dine at the Gary hotel at noon after they arrive in town, after which they will go directly to the mills. Those who will have the
opportunity to go will have a chance not only to see the greatest mill 6f its kind in the world, but the scene of the greatest business acltvlty In the region.

It fell to the lot of that trusty but
exceedingly gallant officer John Thomp
son to be the first one sighted. Elsie was put In his charge and the officer
started with her to view the city hall. When Elsie took a timid slant at the manly grace and athletic proportions
of the Adonis of the force she seemed to
fall violently in love with him.
All her maiden modesty seemed to
have deserted her too for she insisted
that the officer carry her. John bucked and became very much embarrassed but
Elsie was obdurate and to show she meant what she said sat down in the middle of the sidewalk and refused to
budge. Thompson looked helplessly
around when his eye caught sight of
Officer John 'Weifenbach strolling leisurely along about a block away.

Crown Point, Ind., Aug. 14. (Spe
cial.) At last, the unexpected has happened. In spite of all the gibes and , witticisms that have been hurled 4 the old Erie milk train, it accomplished a feat this morning beyond the wildest dreams of the passengers who have ridden on the staid old "milk churn" year in and year out. If The Times didn't have a reputation for truth and veracity ahem! its readers would hardy believe this tale, and even in spite of its reputation this will be taken with a grain of salt. Think of the Erie milk train going at such a pace that it easily outdistanced a little yellow dog that was making a frantic effort to accompany its owner, who was riding on the train! Can you imagine going such a dizzy and awe-inspiring pace on the old milk train? Actually Happened Today. Believe it or not, that is what actually happened this morning as the train pulled out of Crown Point bound for Wirt, three miles distant. The dog started at the Crown Point station to catch the train, and If the engineer hadn't been so hard-hearted and started his train at Wirtz when doggie was a block behind his train, it
could have ridden the rest of the way into the city. Passengers on the train watched the race with Interest and never knew the train to make such speed. It is said, however, that the brakeman was called Into service to shovel coal and help the fireman out, who had nearly succumbed in his efforts to feed the engine in order to keep ahead of the dog, he being a kind hearted fireman and not wishing to run over the poor little beast who was so anxious to ride with his master.
