The Rounder Says
Both of the proprietors of the moving picture shows in Hammond disclaim the responsibility for offering the "just as good" for the real thing. Our good friend Rellly says that the moving picture trust put one over him and that lie did not guess that the pictures were not of the fight July Fourth. Our equally good friend Mr. Herron. whose place of entertainment is a little farther down the street, says that he knew the pictures were not those '' the light on July Fourth but were as he advertised, "Reproduction of the tight." It makes little difference to Mr. Herron how the public interpreted that
rattier ambiguous phrase. Mr Herron
understood "Reproduction pictures of the. fight" to mean that the tight was not the real one but was a reproduction
of the fight July Fourth of which pic
tures hail been mad". The general public, however, almost to a man, took another interpretation of the phrase. As they understood it. the pictures were a photographic reproduction of the real fight and their silver .limes were forthcoming because they thought that they could get a line on that great contest. Had the makers of the pictures had
only the idea in mind of reproducing! the fight and making pictures of it there seems to have be.-n little necessity for taking a picture of the bleachers at a base ball game in order to cary out the impression that the fight was being held before a big crowd. Of course, nobody has any kick about the pictures. They were good and with the half hour's rest between the rounds which the fighters must have had th.-y "mixed in" t a greater extent tiian Xelson and Cans did in the original fight.
There is nothing like public opinion
ar a domesticator of street railway companies. A few years ago the Ham
mond. Whiting & East Chicago line was in undisputed control of the territory in and about the cities after which it was named. Since then the the field for traction lines has become
so inviting that the local company is threatened with serious competition. The brazen defiance of the wishes of the people has bc.-n gradually replaced by a humble submission to its will and now behold, the cool air of the lake fronk park with the sonorous notes of line band. The president with a p. rpetual grouch lias been replaced by ccurteous officials who are solicitous for the welfare of the public which was condemned in days gone by. by ail of the epithets to which his tongue could give utterance. It really begins to look as though the people might begin to warm up to the Hammond, Whiting & East Chicago street railway. It ha be. n tamed until
now it is actually eating out ot our hands.
