FROM NEIGHBORING TOWN AND CITY

CROWN POINT NEWS

Disgraceful Scenes at Lake. Again the Monon railroad has been guilty of dumping carloadsof the scum and filth from Chicago's underworld at the beautiful little Cedar Lake resort arid the scenes enacted there last Sunday-, are said to beggar description and would make lurid reading in the yellowest of journals. Certinly this is a reprehensible proceeding on the railroad company's part, making for Its own private gain a cesspool of one of tiie prettiest spots in I.ikf county, making it unlit for the pleasure of Lake county's decent citizens, who ought to have the first opportunity of enjoying the pleasures of the beautiful little resort, but who go there carrying their lives and reputations in their hands. Again, the cost to Lake county in policing the resort where

these "picnics" or "orgies" are taking place is not small by any means, and the profits derived by a limited number of citizens is in no way counter-balanced by th damage done to the place; reputation .and the pleasures our people are deprived of by the lawlessness and debauchery that are enacted at some of the Monon railroad company's picnics. The Times states the facts and sees the need of a remedy, in giving back to Lake county's peace-loving and lawabiding citizens its one, and only one, pleasure resort so that its citizens, their wives and children can spend a few weeks there without coming in contact with all the degrading and demoralizing spectacles of depravity that are common occurrences at the resort now, making it an unfit place for women and children to be while these "railroad harvests" are taking place. There is a remedy, Lake county citizens want it, the next thing is to take proper steps in securing it. Cedar Lake for Lake county people and their friends.

tion was entirely successful and Mrs. Clapper is getting along splendidly. Miss Alta Specter returned yesterday from a two week's visit in Elgin, Illinois. Mrs. John Fahey left yesterday for Milwaukee, being called there by the very serious illness of her sister, Mrs. P. C. Kerens. Buffet Now Drug Store. The store building on the corner of Tenth avenue and Broadway, formerly used as Borman's Buffet, has now been rented by E. J. Bader, president of the Indiana Harbor State Bank, and he will use it in a few days to establish a loan nd insurance office. Mr. Bader has been contemplating the opening up of an office in Gary for some time and he now feels that he has secured a suitable location. It was satdthat Mr.

Borman intend e dto open up a drug store at that place but that was probably due to his closing announcement

hen the place was closed which read

that his bar room would be be a drug

store by and by.

Wheeler Is Optimistic. Harold H. Wheeler, on whose shoulders the brunt of the work falls, in arranging the important details for the proposed automobile race, to be held here some time this fall, is very optimistiic regarding the big event and sees no reason for not landing it for Lake county on the proposed course between Crown Point, Lowell and Or

chard Grove. He states that a petition has been started in Lowell and the surrounding country and is meeting with great success, the farmers seeming to be heartily in favor of it, and willing to forgo traffic on the course the day the races are held. The slight opposition accorded the project by one or two Lake county citizens has been practically obviated and Mr. Wheeler thinks that with everyone willing, the races will surely be landed, and the biggest event ever pulled off in Lake county will be a matter of history within a few months. All it needs is a "long pull and a strong pull and a pull altogether," to make the affair a success.

Lake resort were brought in the limelight by his being brought before Judge Nicholson's court yesterday charged with assaulting one of the habitues of the place, the night before. The reputation of the place is anything but savory and it one of the chief weapods of the "drys" in their war against the lic(uor traffic. The town clock on the court house tower and the Erie railroad time seems to bo at loggerheads lately and many of our people have missed their trains accordingly. Hon.
