to

Nearly 2.500 people greeted ex-Governor Yates last night at Ninety-sixth street and Commercial avenue, in what was his apening speech in the gubernatorial campaign in South Chicago. The small tent served only as a miniature shelter for the great throng, for it la estimated that fully as many were on the outside as were under the canvass. Many speakers preceded Mr. Yntt-s, who did not arrive until about !:45. due to his presence in other parts of the city, among them being former Judge Pettlt, of the South Chicago Municipal Court and II. V. I?e, both of whom are candidates for county offices. Kx-Alderman Badenoch was also a conspicuous figure and proceeded in his thirty-minute talk to point out a number of weak spote of the Dceneen administration. Mr. Badenoch was a former neighbor of Governer Ieneen and the hot shots he poured Into the present governor seemed apparent that he knew whereof he spoke. On the arrival of ex-Governor Yates in an automobile, accompanied by a number of other spellbinders, hats were thrown into air.

wlck-Blaek-Collender Company make j and ail the furnishings of the Interior are of the highest class. Lockers and private cue racks have been installed and every convenience suitable for players of the great game, have been provided for. The lineolium alone, which is an imitation of assorted col

ors of marble block, cost $500. The electric light system throughout the parlors is perfect and the ventilation, which Includes a number of electric fans, will tend to make it one of the most prominent of the South Side amusement parlors. Throughout the interior, potted plants and flowers bedeck the corners and walls. The opening today brought out a large number of both billiard and pool players and tomorrow a number of expert plawers of both games will be in attendance from the city and exhibitions will be given throughout the afternoon and evenig. American Beauty roses were a feature of today's opening, they being given as souvenirs. Booras brothers said yesterday that before opening In South Chicago they had several other places In view, tut were finally convinced that the South Chicago field would furnish the most business as they believe the city to be the hub of the Calumet region from a business standpoint.

a block of lake shore between Ohio and Indiana streets is to be improved at a cost of $21,000. First to Oprn Soon. Yesterday the special park commission took up the matter and decided upon the plans for the East End avenue beach. Friday may be an unlucky day but the Bachelor Girls' club of South Chicago is willing to take a chance with it this evening, for they have completed all the minor details of their "moonlight picnic" which will be held on the Wooded Isle at Jackson park. The club number twenty-five of South Chicago's most popular young ladies who have banded themselves together with the solemn vow that they will never marry. While this is an awful vow to make (according to their gentlemen admirers) the girls say that they Intend to Btick to it. The club has been organized for the last year and so far none of the members have violated any of the bylaws. Although the girls assert they will live and die "old maids" they have invited their gentlemen friends to accompany them on tonight's trip. Some of the fellows were extremely surprised at being invited out by the

girls and right there was where the telephone got in its good work. With "Lover's Lane" and "Courtship Trail" on the Wooded Isle a prediction has been freely made that the

gentlemen friends of the girls stand a fair chance of getting some of the members to sever their connection with the club. The members of the Bachelors' club will leave South Chicago at 7:30 and are due to arrive at the Wooded Isle by 8 o'clock. Each of the girls will bring along a luncheon and their gentlemen friends are assured of a good "moonlight lunch." A short program will be given and the party wil end by taking a ride through the lagoon in one of the launches.

The beach in each instance will have to be constructed of concrete because of the action of the wind and water, and a breakwater will have to be constructed to insure the safety of bathers. "Promise you will not take a drink for the next six months and I will discharge you, if your wife gives me permission," were the words uttered yesterday by Judge 'Walker at the South Chicago Municipal court. Walter, Macodlo, 2S years old, residing at SS10 Saginaw avenue, went out on a terrific bender the other evening and, coming home proceeded to wreak vengeance upon his wife, Katie. The first question he asked was why his dinner wasn't still warm, and when

she replied that It had been kept warm for over two hours and thinking he was not coming home she had turned out the gas to keep down the gas bill, this seemed to anger Walter and ha sailed into his wife and with a left to the jaw put her to the floor for the count of ten. Neighbors heard the rumpus In the Macodlo home and notified the police, who arrested the husband. In the courtroom Macodlo said he was so drunk that he did not remember what he waa doing and upon his promise to appear before the father of his church and take a vow not to drink for six months he was released. The couple left the courtroom, going to St. Michael's church, where Walter promised not to Imbibe during the next six months-
