John and His "Dog-Fish." John Luther and a party of friends went fishing nt the Kankakee river recently and John proved to be the only lucky man in the bunch, being the only on to tatch anything, which finally turned out to be a "dog-fish." Of course, this isn't Mr. Luther's idea of luck, and the boys say his exclamations of disgust were only equalled by his efforts to land the worthless fish.
VALPARAISO. The Cost of a Donkey Sray. Yesterday afternoon at about 2:45 o'clock occurred one of the most unusual accidents and or.e which night have proved fatal to ate least two persons. The Colorado burro owned by George Sherwood, was being shod at Hubbell & B.irneko's blacksmith shop on South Lafnyette street, when It be-
gan to bray. Standing next to the
burro was a small horse owned by Herman Krieger, who resides west of town.
The animal, which was totally blind.
whs crazed with fear at the strange and hideous noise which occurred almost in
her ear and defiantly faced the burro with head down as if ready to give battle and then, unable to see her strange enemy, she wheeled and kicked at th beast, after which, tearing herself loose from the hitching chain, she dashed through and over three benches toward the rear of the room, falling on two large cans of oil, after which she crashed through the heavy rear door which was open, tearing it from its hinges, and, falling against the threshhold, which is about eighteen inches above the lloor. A small boy standing in the doorway barely had time to jump into an adjoining fence corner as the unfortunate beast fell, this time into a large jile of scrap iron and steel from which he extricated herself only to staid a mad career which took her across the back yard and clear through a strong and newly painted lattice fence at the rear of the residence of Miss
Kate Conner, who ran up the steps of the back porch just in time to have the insane animal fall at her feet upon the porch, causing her to step upon a lawn mower, which broke and swung its handle upward, striking her a terrific blow near one eye. The animal then struggled to its feet, turned In its wild flight and struck its head against a solid heavy board fence from which it broke the end of one of the puright boards. As the animal fell back from the force of the shock, it was caught by Mr. Harr.eko, who had pursued it, and let to the shop, from where it was later driven home by a daughte.r of Mr. Krieger. Dr. Loiirg was called to attend Miss
Conner who is now able to be around, though suffering from the blow on the head anu a severe nervous shock.

OFFICIAL PLOTS AGAINST WIFES' POODLE
City Engineer Melton of
Gary Plans to Have Pup Done Away With.
SCHEME HOWEVER LAID BARE
Gary Joshes Melton and His Republican Opponent May Use Plot as Campaign Material.
A nefarious plot has been unearthed in Gary lately. "It Is remarkable how little events often shape the destinies of the world." ince said a famous author (or words to that effect), and the same thing happened at the last board meeting right here in Gary. A deep laid plot has been uprooted in which the principles are City Engineer A. P. Melton and a little French poodle dog. It Is whispered that the board at their last session, enacted certain legislation
at the instance and request of Mr. Melton, the owner of the aforesaid dog. which was aimed Indirectly at the Ufa of this canine. The little, white, curly haired dog, named 'Ping Pong" and Mr. Melton, are- at outs, and although Mr. Melton desires to dsipose of it, the animal has a staunch friend and protector in the person of his wife, who refuses to part with it. Hence the plot and th legislation. Wnn tn Get RII of Dort. This law, which has since become in full force, demands that all dogs b muzzled, and the penalty for violation thereof is that they shall tie put to death by any police officer of the city. The plan, which Mr. Melton had in iepv. was to allow his enemy to roam at large, without complying to the recent enactment and then have the dog shot. Tills cruel blood thirsty plot to assasinate was laid bare at the last meet
ing, and it is probably that his apponent for county surveyor. Will Bridge, of Hammond, will use this information against him in the coming campaign, as William Kliver. one of the big republican guns, was there and hast the story tucked away in his vest pocket for future use.
The Othr Half Is Waiting. One of the most pitiable sights la the world is that of people who are using only a small bit of their ability, while the rst of it is waiting to ba used. It is still ineffective because of the many little weaknesses or peculiarities, the bad habits, t)r the lack of preparation, which handicap and make practically ineffective the whol life. "What!" she exclaimed, with a triumphant, now I've-caught-you air. "You tell me it will thrive equally well in sun or shade? Young man, you don't know your business! Fetch your employer!"
