FROM NEIGHBORING TOWN AND CITY

CROWN POINT NEWS

Buys Fine Property. It is reported that Mrs. Beers, proprietor of the Commercial hotel, lias added to her real estate holdings, by purchasing the Hughes homestead on Main street, opposite the Commercial hotel, for a consideration of $2,800. The lot is ninety-one feet frontage and about 120 feet deep and is one of the best locations in town, and is considered a remarkably cheap peice of property for the price mentioned. The Hughes family will probably live in the Manahan home on Court street.

Fedesals of Chicago for the Fourth of July game. This is the only team that has beaten Indiana Harbor this year, so the contest Saturday should be a hot one. Besides the $25 prize offered by

the Boosters, there Is a side bet of $100 on the game. The lineup will be the same as when they met before. Game will be called at 1 o'clock.

GARY NEWS

New Garage Is Planned. It is said negotiations are under way' for tine sale of a certain piece of Crown Point uproperty, and that if the deal goes through, the purchasers will erect one of the largest automobile garages In Northern Indiana. Crown Point, on account of its natural beauty, its proximity to Cedar Ijake, the celebrated half-mile track at the fair grounds, and Its convenient distance from Chicago, is becoming the Mecca for touring automobilists and every day sees the streets dotted with pleasure seekers. Of course, these these tourists will meet with accidents, common to automobillng. and it is the Intention of the men who hfcve the above project in view to erect a garage and employ an emergency man that will be able to care for those needing assist-

The Owls had a rousing meeting Monday night at the Auditorium. Fifteen new candidates were put through. They also entertained a delegation of

twenty from the Whiting nest. After the meeting a lunch of the kind that men like was served and a few informal talks given. The Auditorium lody room was decided on as the permanent quarters for the organization. Miss Minnie Bowers, moved into the lower floor of her fine new two-story Hat building yesterday. It was not ascertained who has leased the second floor, although It has been rented. Mr. L. Hantschilt, who built the building, has good reason to be proud of the work. Ladies, I have some real nice hats, now in stock which will be sold at your own price. Don't forget to call at Mrs. Blomenthol, 1907 One Hundred

and Thirty-seventh street, near ! ir

Victim of Paralysis. John Burk, who Is not known In Gary, was walking between the .portable school houses In the vicinity of Gary and suddenly dropped unconscious and is said by the physicians who attended him, to have been the victim of a paralytic stroke. He has been In a state of coma ever since lie was found this morning, and fears are entertained for his recovery. He has relatives in Pullman.

Weber Gets a Hearing. Henry "Weber, the expert forger, who

operated in Gary several months ago

and was captured last week in Loratn, O., received his preliminary hearing be

fore Judge Huber yesterday, and was bound over to the superior court, under bonds of $300. The evidence was so perfect that the only thing Weber could do was to pelad guilty. Weber, it developes, is an old crook, and It is

thought that he worked this same game before he came to Gary. He stated to friends just before he left Chicago for the east, that he felt confident that the police could never cap

ture him.

Pupils and friends of St. Mary's parochial schoos held their annual picnic at the Schulien grove south of town yesterday, and the affair was attended by a large crowd of pleasure seekers. Speeches, athletic events and a big picnic dinner were the features of the dy and everyone who attended reports an enjoyable time. The new court room is being put In shape and will rrobably be completed by July 6. when the Circuit Court will convene for the adjourned term of the April session. The grist of business to be ground out of the justice mill Is something apalling. and It is only a question of a short time when a cantlnuous court will be absolutely necessary to keep ahead of the docket. July 18 is the day set for the motorcycle races by the Chicago Motorcycle Club, at the completion of the Xew

York to Chicago grind. They will be held at the fair ground, as that track Is particularly suited to the holding of

the event. Crown Pointers will be able to witness some exciting events as the races will be for blood, the nu

merous firms sending teams to show the respective speed and merits of their

machines. No doubt the other towns in

the county will send large delegations to the event as they are exciting and thrilling In the extreme. Crown Point

lias been given this big event unasked for,. andJl-hehooves ouTvtople -to make

the people welcome as they will no doubt pull a large crowd to witness the races.

Van Sherman will make many new Improvements tn his barber shop in the near future, intending to add bathrooms and shoe-shining parlors and when complete, Van promises one of the finest shops in Northern Indiana. Politics seems to bo a "tabooed" topic of conversation in Crown Point. The Times has been the recipient of much favorable comment on its articles against the street fakir, who sold his shoddy wares on our streets last week. Trade witli your own merchants and they will be able to sell you cheaper and better goods than any street peddler can. Dr. Harry Hayward, who met with the serious accident on the golf links in Chicago and lost his eye as the result, is visiting his parents here for a few weeks. Harry seems to be less

concerned than his relatives and friends

and certainly bears it in a philosophical manner. The firemen are not letting any grass grow under their feet in preparing for their tournament on Aug. 1st, and If they don't win, It won't be because they have not practiced consistently. Trainers at the Wlllowdale stock farm have commenced to "work out" their blooded stock In view of entering them in the fall races throughout this section of the country.
