Sad Accident to Crown Point Boy. Dr. Harry Hay ward, formerly of this place and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hayward of Main street, well known throughout Lake county and In Chicago for his athletic ability in various sports, meet with a sad accident in Chicago on Thursday afternoon which caused him the loss of his left eye and injury to the right. While out on the golf links with Mr. Badenoch. whom he had been visiting for a short time preparatory to a visit with his parents here. Mr. Hayward was struck with a golf lall driven with terrific force, striking him squarely In the left optic and injuring that member so severely that an operation was performed yesterday and his eye taken out. Mr. Hayward, so it is said had a few days previously returned from Duluth, Minn., where he had taken the state medical examination and as he was specializing Jr. surgery the sad accident witf be doubly hard as it will b a great hindrance to the successful carrying on of his profession. The Hayward family left yesterday to his bedside In Chicago. The entire community were shocked when the news was heard and their sympathy goes out to Mr. Hayward in his affliction.-

Crown Point will probably have a new tailoring establishment in the near

ing for his shop and wil rent a house

County Officials in Town. Several of the county officials drove over to Gary yesterday with Township Assessor Walter Gibson to check up the assessment role which has . been, recently turned in from Calumet township acording to the usual custom. In the party were County Treasurer Albert Mack, Auditor Charles A. Johnson, Assessor William E. Black and Mr. J. Blackely of the board of reviews. boarding house at Washington street, near Flftenth, reports that her room was entered and robbed last night of

terday on a charge of assault and battej-y preferred bty Mrs. B. Marcovich. From the evidence it would seem that Mrs. Marcovich accused Mrs. Geohowski of being drunk. The latter lady resented the aspersion most vehemently and besides handing her a few choice names grabbed Mrs. Marcovich and sat her down a nearby chair with a jolt. Mrs. M., however, being a lady of considerable spirit herself, refused to stay put and jumping up went after the professional woman. The accounts of the subsequent events appeared to be somewhat conflicting, but there seems to be no doubt that enough hair was lost to make a very respectable switch and both ladies displaced a vigor of vocabulary that would have

made a sailor green with envy. The judge let the midwife down with $15.65 in al land she immediately swore out a warrant against Mrs. Marcovich for provoke. The infant child of Mrs. George Reiland's sister-in-law is very 111 at the home of the former on Elm street. Mr. and Mrs. James LIghtbody and daughter expect to sail for Europe on July 4 on the steamship St. Paul. James D. LIghtbody sails with the American team June 27 on the steamship Philadelphia. The LIghtbody family will be away at least six months. Mrs. Mary Wellis of Commonwealth avenue has rented the fiat in the Baker building, which la now occupied by Mrs. John Bowers and Fred Olds and family. '' Mr. C. R. Haggerty spent Friday in Chicago. Mrs.' Agnes Smith and daughter were shopping in Chicago Friday.

Sum Is Made Up. At the meeting of ' the democratic club which was held last night in the club rooms of the Gary hotel it was found that they were short the trlffling sum of $217 on the barbecue bills which amounted to nearly a thousand. A collection was taken up in the room to help defray the debt and the money was turned into the treasury.' By the next regular meeting of the organization it is thought that l of the money will be raised and the 'event closed.

The first session of the institute of

shorthand of which Judge Townsley is

president was started last night with a

fairly good attendance. The school for the present will be located in the office

of Judge Townsley and the instructor will be A. Dearbyne, manager of the Walter S. Ross realty company. The ill st ten students to enter have been promised reduced rates. The affair is

the first private educational institu tion to be launched in Gary.

Charles H. Stewert, the Hammond undertaker, took the sisters of St. Margarett's hospital of that place to Gary

yesterday in his two machines to show

them the sights of the city and to visit

the Mercy hospital in this city. There were eight sisters in the party and all

seemed to enjoy the trip immensley,

George P. Dowling, who has been running a clothing store on Broadway,

near Sixth avenue, together with three other partners has now left the store

and will spend a few months at Atlantic

City recovering his health. The store

did not last very long in the city owing to several misfortunes which happened

to Mr. Dowling when he was in busi ness.

The Gary baseball . club team has

scheduled a game for Sunday with the

Koster Colts of Chicai. The game

will be played at Fortieth street and

Grand avenue.

Roy Shackelton, the well known Gary engineer who went to Lafayette to be married, returned to Gary with

his bride last evening. The will live at the Gary hotel temporarily and will later make their home in the new steel

city.

Sam McElroy, the Gary negro who

was arrested under suspicion as being

Jessie Coe, the Indianapolis negro who

murdered a policeman there, was re

leased yesterday. Advices from Indian

apolis were to the effect that the de

scrlption furnished did not tally with

the murdered man.

In Gary on the Fourth of July is th

edict of the Gary police and will be backed up by the Justices by fines

amounting to $15.90, should any on

yesterday for shooting through a house

while he was drunk was fined $22.90

This fine may seem excessive but th

police in Gary are determined to stop the promiscuous revolver shooting which has ben going on around Gary

and they propose to make an exampl

of every one caught in the act. The

fine was paid and Erkman is a' sader

and wiser man.
