The little bird who tells about weddings and engagements is fluttering around today with the story that another Homewood school teacher, who is also quite popular In society is to be married next, month, to a well known young man, who lives at present in this city. The only trouble with the little bird is that he' does hate names to become public. , RETURNS FROM VISIT. Dr. ,E. M. Shanklin returned this morning from a visit with friends and relatives in the southern part of the state. He will resume his duties as coroner of Lake county in place of Dr. & "W. Chidlaw, who has been acting as his deputy. ! SEWING CmCIiE MEETS. ' The sewing circle of St. Joseph's Catholic church met yesterday afterSoon at the home of Mrs. Frank Stoltz, in South Hohman street. There was a Very large attendance of members, all 'of whom report yesterday's party as Shaving been one of the pleasantest of the year. Cards were played during the afernoon and Mrs, Fred Humpher and Mrs. William D. Weis won the tenors. The consolation prize was awarded Mrs. Waltz. The next meeting will be in two weeks at the home if Mrs. Otto Knoezer in Fayette street. The Fleur de Lis club members met yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Keyser in State street for the regular club party. Pedro was played during the afternoon and the prizes were won by Mrs. Keyser and Mrs. Mary Krolowltz. Mrs. Osborn was awarded the consolation prize. At the close of the games a dainty luncheon was served by the hostess. The next meeting will be in two weeks at the home of Mrs. Mary Kralowitz. CLUB PARTY YESTERDAY. The Acme Social club held a pleasant meeting yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Miller in Russell street. AH the - members were present and spent a very pleasant time at cards. The prizes were won by Mrs. Price and Mrs. C. Bonner. Following the games the hostess served a dainty luncheon. Mrs. Nolan will entertain the club at Its next party in two weeks. CHICKEN PIE StPPER, The' Martha . society of the First Christian church will give a chicken pie supper Thursday, evening, June 27, at which they desire a good attendance. The proceeds of the affair will be used for the new church building fund. CHURCH CARNIVAL A SUCCESS. The Martha society of the First Christian church gave a carnival yesterday afternoon and evening in the tabernacle on Calumet avenue. The attendance was good all day and the ladies estimate that they have cleared about thirty dollars. The proceeds will be used by the society for the pledge they made for the new church building fund. The Christian church band played a program of music during the affair and all kinds of carnival amusements were enjoyed. Fancy articles were put on sale by the society from which they also realized a good sum HOLD A BUSINESS MEETING. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Clark entertained the members of the West Hammond! Pedro club last evening at their home, SIS West -State street. The meeting was called to transact some important business of the club and it was also decided to hold a public card party. ' Miss Mae tiurhans, teacher of history in the Hammond high school, will go to her home in Lowell for a few days' visit, after which Fhe will Join her sisters, the MIsse Hessle and Edith Burhams at Winona Lake where they have a cottage for tha summer. BIRTHDAY PARTY. Mr. and Mrs. William Love entertained a number of friends very pleasantly last evening at their home in Truman avenue in honor of Mr. Love's birthday anniversary. The evening was passed very pleasantly with gamese and music after which th hostess served her guests with a very pleasing luncheon. Among the . guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Rodney C. Hobbs, Misses Mae Hansen, Edith Bradt, Maud Lewis, Frances Hamacher, Ruth Brenneman, Zelda Love, Margaret Hepner and Dollle Geib, Messrs. Walter Webster, James Dixon, Otto Hudson, Claude Palmer, Thomas Drake, Richard Bi3hop, Warren Clayton and Paul Mastellar. Miss Inez Nlckey will leave within the next few days for her home where she will spend a few weeks' after which she will go east for the remainder of the summer. MISSIONARY MEETING. ' The Woman's Missionary society of the First Presbyterian church met this afternoon at the home of Mrs. D. C. Atkinson in South Hohman street. Mrs. Atkinson and Mrs. Shanklin were in charge of the program, which was very interesting and enjoyable. LAKE PARTY. A party of young ladies gave a lake party last evening : in honor of Miss Kathryn Hemminger,. who leaves Hammond Saturday for her home in Rockwood, Pa., after having been a teacher in the Hammond, schools the past year. The young ladies left early in. the, evening and enjoyed a fish supper. Those in the praty were Misses Hemminger, A. Gray, B. Goodland, C. Green and N. Bryan.

QUIITCE CUSTARD. While quinces are at their best quince custard is In order. Rub the fuzz off the fruit with a coarse cloth. Slice the quinces, saving seeds and cores, and stew gently in water to cover until very tender Strain through a jelly bag. Measure out a pint of Juice, add to it five ounces of sugar, boll and pour over the yolks of ten well beaten eggs while hot, stirring all the time. Pour back into a hot bowl, set this in a dish of boiling water and stir over the fire until the custard befflns to thicken. Pour into glasses, chill and serve.

Cheyney, who was killed last Wednesday while switching at Osborn, was sent to Fort Wayne today from where the remains may be sent to London, the former home of the young man. The Inquest was held yesterday at Emerling's morgue and the remains were so embalmed that they will stand shipment acros sthe ocean. They have been laid in a steel casket. S OPENED TODAY New Fire Station Contract May Not be Let However For Some Time. Bids were opened this morning by the board of public works for the new 10,000 Central fire station. The council has appropriated only $10,000 for this building to be furnished completely. The bids, however, were several thousand dollars over this estimate and the board has consequently taken them under advisement The bids wera as follows:

The board rescinded the contracts for the Towle street macadam, the bids being too high. The primary assessmnt roll were adopted for the Morton avenue sewer and the Becker street sidewalks. Lavene brothers being the lowest bidders for the Benedict avenue sewer the contract was awarded to them. To this firm was also awarded the contract for the Wilcox avenue sewer. The bids for the Indiana avenue sewer were rejected, being too high aid the clerk was instructed to advertise for bids on the same contract to be sent in June 29. The board also rejected the bids on the Harrison park building, they being too high, and instructed the city clerk to advertise for new bids to be sent in June 29.
