Cecilian Chorus Delights, Large Audience Last Night at Church, y One of the most elaborate musical functions of the season was given Aast evening at the South Chicago Congregational church when the Cecilian chorus, forty voices strong, gave their benefit concert for the South Enjd Woman's club under the auspices, of the South End Woman's club. Every chair in the house was filled before the first number had concluded, and taking ever, hing into consideration the second concert by the local chorus was a grand success, both socially and financially. Previous to the concert. Miss Grace Darling, resident manager of the South End Center, the local settlement house, gave a short talk upon the work accomplished by the members since its debut in South Chicago and the work they expected to do before the year was out. Her speech brought forth no little applause. I To give any one member of the local chorus praise would not do Justice to the others, as every member did fine and deserve praise for the manner in which the program was carried out. After the case had been tried all day in Judge Iluber's court and at least fifteen witnesses had been examined, the jury finally disagreed and failed to find Frank Blackmeler of Horsford Park, near Gary, guilty of assault and battery on the person of Mary Paff. Incidentally, the feud which has been raging in this peculiar community is not abated In the least by the decision of the twelve men and things have come to such a pass that developments of a eensational nature are expected at almost any time. This case is further complicated by the fact that a woman by the name of Williams had Mrs. Paff and her little daughter, Elizabeth, seven years old, arrested on the charge of assault and battery. This is about the fifteenth case that has been taken into the justice courts within tho past year and it Is said that the situation is becoming more complicated every day. The World Is Her Lobster. GETS BALLOON FEVER
Texas Doctor Wants South Chicago Man to Build Him Racing BalloonAbout the busiest man In South Chi cago these days Is Prof. James I Case, the local aeronaut, who Is build ing the largest balloon In the United States. The balloon which Mr. Case is now building will be known as the "City of Chicago" and will be the entry of the Chicago Aeronautique club In the International balloon races which will be held In Chicago the second, third and fourth of next month. Prof. Chase expects to hve the monster air craft completed by the end of this week, ready for delivery at the clubs' downtown headquarters. For the last few days the local aeronaut has been swamped with engage ments for associations for Independence Day but as he will be competing in the International races he Is comelled to pass them up. The following letter received by Prof. Case from Dr. Frederick Fielding of San Antonio, Tex., is self explanatory and gives an idea of how the balloon fever strikes an automobile enthusiast. Mr. J. L. Case, South Chicago, 111. Dear Sir I believe I am getting the "Balloon Fever." I am having certain symptoms that some people might describe as the beginning of Insanity, and the probability is that one ride in a balloon will be all that Is necessary to bring me back to a normal state of mind or to the Mother earth at least. Anyway we are living in the ballooning age, and as automobile racing fails to longer satisfy me, I am looking for something more sensational. Of course I have no particular desire to commit suicide, even if I am insane, hence I hope to get In commpnlcation with some one who is able to build me a touring balloon, and as I desire to enter into the Chicago races the Fourth of nex tJuly, the balloon would have to be built in thirty days from the time I place my .order. I know nothing about balloons whatever, but of course I want one that will carry me safely and as rapidly as possible. In other words I want to win the race. Can you build me a balloon In thirty days that will do the work? If so, say what kind of a balloon I need and expense of same. I weigh about 265 pounds. Please tell me If a light or heavy balloon sails the fastest. I am positively In the market for a balloon. If you are in a position to fill my order please describe the capacity of a balloon and the material to be used, saying how much weight it will carry. A racing balloon is what I want, one capable of a long tour. Kindly let me hear from you and with full particulars by first mail, I am Very respectfully yours, FRIEDERICK J. FIELDING, M- D As Professor Case was unable to take this contract, unon his advice, it was turned over to Samuel Baldwin, of Qunicy, 111., who took the contract for J5,000, ?1,000 of this amount being advanced by Dr. Fielding. Fielding's balloon has already been entered in the international races. Truths and Principles. Ground is Broken Officially on Site of New Congregational Church. Ground at the corner of Sixth avenue and Madison street In Gary upon which the new $50,000 Congregational church is to be erected, was officially broken yesterday when Rev. W. "W. Newell of Chicago struck the first spade In the ground and removed a shovelful of dirt. There were about 150 people present and the services which were held to celebrate the event were appropriate. Rev. W. W. Newell male the principal address of the day and his theme was that as Gary is being built wide and deep it should also be built high. Service Begin lu Afternoon. The services began at 4 p. m. yes terday and Rev. Hamilton of the Frist Presbyterian church and Rev. George Deull of the Methodist church participated in the program. Attorney Ora Wildermuth spoke for the city of Gary and commended the Congregationalists for their progressIveness. The chapel of the new church will be built first and then there will be the addition of the main part. The lot on which the church is to stand was donated by the Chicago Con gregationalists and the New York churches donated part of the money for the building of the church. As soon as the first shovelful of dirt had been removed, Contractor W. C. Covington began the excavations. The first part of the church will be com pleted by Oct. 1. TRAMP'S AWFUL FATE Believing that the train on which he was riding the "blind baggage" was in a collision, an unidentified tramp leaped from Lake Shore train No. 26, which went through Hammond at 11:30 o'clock Monday night, and, was dashed to death The first the train crew knew of the accident was when a companion of the man crawled over the swaying tender and shouted to the engineer. The train was just passing New Carlisle, fourteen miles east of LaPorte, and was run ning a mile a minute. The engineer ran back, and the body of the tramp, with almost every bone broken, was found at the side of the road. The man was frightened when the engineer droppthe scoop into the trough "between xne rails to fill the water tank and water splashed over the two tramps.
