Two weddings which are attracting a
great deal of attention in social circles in Chicago are those of the Misses
Sarah Ida and Bertha Andrews Perry of 319 Bowen avenue. The Misses Perry have determined, although they are to
be married the same evening, j not to have a double wedding because of their fear of a hoodoo
The weddings will occur this evening
at the Emanuel Baptist church and are
interesting to Hammond people for the reason that the mother of the brides is
a sister of Mrs. Edith Griffin of this
city and the girls are cousins of Karl
Griffln and Mrs. Bomberger. Karl Grf
fin has been selected as one of tho
ushers at the second wedding.
Miss Bertha Andrews Perry Is to be
married to Dr. Dan Pike Scott of Kan
kakee, 111., and Miss Sarah Ida Perry
to Harvey Augustus Bush. The first i wedding will take place in Emanuel Baptist church at 7:30 o'clock, Rev L. A. Crandall of Minneapolis officiating.
The second will take place in t"he same
church at 7:43 o'clock Rev. R. M. Van Dcren performing the ceremony. Two Separate Weddings. The wedding parties will be entirely separate. Harvey A Bush will servo Dr. Dan Pike Scott as best man and Dr. Scott, made into a benedict, will return the service for his friends just fifteen minutes later. Miss Helen Gardner will be maid of honor to Miss Bertha Andrew Perry, while Miss Lomlra Alvah Perry, another sister of the brides, will be maid of honor to Miss Sarah Ida Perry. Even the flower girls at the wedding will not be the same. Little Anna
Elizabeth Perry and Josephine Shedd
will act at the first wedding, while
Ruth Robbins and Anna Merrlfield ones will act in the same capacity at
the other.
The ushers of the first wedding will
be Emory Andrews, Lyman J. Hubbard,
Frank A. Tuttle and Fred Bascombe,
The ushers at the wedding of Miss
Sarah Ida Perry and Mr. Bish will be Carl Griffin, George A. Bush, Harry A.
Barber and Isaac N. Davis.
The only persons who will participate
in both weddings," besides the grooms.
who serve each other as best men, is
Harry Allen Barbour, the master of
ceremonies. Apparently Mr. Barbour will find plenty to do in his official
work for the occasion.
Both the bridal couples will spend the
summer at Mrs. Perry's country home at Kankakee, and will be at home after
the 1st of November. The brides ex
plain that they have done all in their power to avert a double wedding, while
they will be married on the same even
ing and in the same church. They have been frightened by the overhanging
'hoodoo." Hanimond Man Usher.
Karl Griffln has been making nightly
trips to Chicago where tho rehearsals
of the two weddings have been taking
place. It seemed so peculiar that ar
rangements should have to be made for two weddings when, except for hat threatening hoodoo one set of principals
would do. However, this is the way
the Misses Perry explain the novel sit
uation from their own point of view
"It was an old family superstition,"
said Miss Bertha Perry, "and there were
so many people kept coming to us
telling us .stories of the misfortunes that were sure to come after a double wedding, that we really lost courage to
do anything of the kind. Some one said that it would be one of the brides who
wouia do sure to die oerore the year
was over. Then some one else told us
that it would be one of the men.
"There are a dozen different version
of the evils that come to those who are
daring enough to defy fate with
double wedding, and we heard each one
of them a dozen ways. The ladder
moon and thirteen hoodoos can't com
pare with this one. But we wanted to
be married at the same church and on
the same night, and so we are going
to arrange it just as nearly as we ca
without having a double wedding,
Maybe it is superstition, but when you get married you want all the omens
right." Not Looking for Trouble.
Miss Sarah Perry shares in her sis
ter's view. "There is no use in going lookln
for trouble," she says cheerfully, "an
we don't want to have our wedding day clouded even by the idea of an old supersition. It may be silly, but one
cannot help thinking about it, and that
would be something not conducive to
absolute happiness. And so we're tak
ing the safer way."
The prospective bridegrooms have
not bon consulted as to their opnlons regarding superstition. It is a woman's privilege to make her wedding arrangements, and where two women are work
ing to avoid a double wedding they will
surely have their own way. The dis
closure of the superstition is a-prob
able explanation of why two recent Chi
cago brides, the Misses Grace and Edith Marks also refused to have a double wedding, although the events followed each other in quick succession.
work," with two money prizes and two prizes for the best bands in the parade, this hint is given: "Just think how you can let yourself loose for two days. The governor,
the mayor, the sheriff, the chief of police judge are all members of the herd. In fact, nearly all of the verv
best people are, and the few who are not will all want to be after this do
ings."
Today and Tomorrow. This morning a reception was given
to te visiting members of the order at the Elks club building at 112 and 114
East Maryland street, and at 11 o'clock
the business session of the State Reunion asociatlon began.
