PEDRO PARTY A SUCCESS. Golden Rule Council D. of L. gave the first of a series of pedro parties last evening in the K. of P. hall, which was voted by all who were present as being a social success. The party was ' very well attended. Several games of pedro were played during the evening, after which an informal social time was enjoyed. The prizes will not be award ed until after the close of the series, when pretty hand painted china will be given the winners of the highest number of games. MARTHA SOICETY MEETS. ' The Martha society of the First Christian church will meet Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Plum at her home in Douglas street. BISCUIT ICE CREAM. Two quarts whipped cream allow four eggs, three-fourths of a cupful of sugar, three-fourths of a cupful of water and a teaspoonful of vanilla. Boil the sugar and water together for twenty-five minutes. Beat the whites of the eggs to a stiff froth, and gradually pour over them, still beating the hot syrup. Beat the yolks and add to the whites and syrup. Place the pan in another vessel of hot water and cook for ten minutes, beating all the time. - Set away to cool. When quite cold add the vanilla and mix the cream In lightly. Pour In a mould and pack in ice and salt. Cover with a piece of carpet and set away for three or four hours to harden. Four tablespoonfuls of maraschino or sherry may be used in place of the vanilla, If preferred.

He has been the guest of his brother, John in Augusta, Ga., where he is a broom manufacturer. Mrs. G. Pape, his moth er, who has been making her home in the south, returned from Augusta and will henceforth reside with the Peter Schroeder family. While in the Carolinas Mr. Schroeder says that he experienced weather ranging from 95 to 100 degrees. He begins his work on the Hammond-East Chicago run tomorrow.POLICE ARE DISCONSOLATE. The board of public works this morning awarded tht contract for the 5-8th inch water meters to the Neptune Meter Meter company. This company put In a bid last week offering to furnish the meters at the rate of $S.40. The board adopted the asseesment role for the Hanover street ,3-4 inch water pipe and passed a resolution adopting the same. The report of the Morton avenue section "B" sewer was accepted and placed on file. The plans and specifications for the Becker street sidewalk were adopted and placed on file. Yesterday afternoon marked the closing of the 1908 season of the Mon day club, one of the largest women's clubs in South Chicago and the Calumet region. The meeting was held at the Bessemer Park club rooms and was greeted by one of the largest attendances in the club's history. Although this is the last regular meeting for the season, another meeting will be held at the Bessmer Park assembly hall May 25, when the head liner will be Dr. L. C. Monln, a dean at Armour Institute and a man who is very highly educated. His subject for the evening will be "Will and Character." Speaking of the coming meeting, Mrs. Fisher, one of the members said "Those who are fortunate enough to get an invitation certainly will not be sorry that they have r attended after the meeting is over." In addition to Dr. Monlns' speech during the evening there will be mu sical numbers and recitations and brief talks by the members and other people of prominence. Luncheon to be Served. After the entertainment a delightful little luncheon will be served to those present. Thin the Story Told by Jacob Brieman of Writ Hammond, III. The police of the Englewood station are investigating a story told by Jacob Brlemarz, 45 years old, living in West Hammond, 111., who was found sitting on the sidewalk in front of the police station last night suffering from paralysis. He told the police that he was seized with an attack in WTest Hammond and that he was brought to Chicago in a buggy by a constable and a friend and placed on the sidewalk In front of the police station. A letter was found In Brlemarz which was signed by a man supposed to be a trustee of the township of Thornton. Several members of a fire company whose quarters adjoin those of the police station saw a buggy driven up to the front of the station last night and saw two men help another out. After the man was seated on the sidewalk the buggy was driven away. Must Be Strenuous Preacher A theological student was sent one Sunday to supply a vacant pulpit la a Connecticut valley town. A few days afterward he received a copy of the weekly paper of that place with the following item marked: "Rev. of the senior class at Yale seminary supplied the pulpit at the Congregational church last Sunday, and the church will now be closed three weeks for repairs."
