nickels, dimes, and half-dollars. FIKES . AT ONE MAN; HITS TWO. South. Chicago Policeman Hag Battle With "Hungarian Giant." Anton Vazar, known as .the "Hungarian giant," last night dared Policeman Roach of the South Chicgo detail to take from him a revolver which he had in his pocket. In the fight which followed Vazar was shot In the rl?ht side of the head and the bullet glaced off and struck John DeVTltt in the right forearm. Policeman Roach, who is of moderate size, was standing at Ninetieth street and Ontario avenue when Vazar, who is six feet three inches tall and weighs 250 pounds, accosted him. Roach made a grab for the weapon and later tried to strike Vazar with his club. The men fought on the sidewalk and in Peter Dalarlne's soon until Roach drew his revolver and fired. . DeWltt was leaving the saloon when he was struck. , "Policeman Sullivan came to the aid of Roach and Vazar ws subdued. Later Joseph Dragovich, bartender in the saloon, and George Culman were arrested for refusing to assist Roach when he called on them. - - GASOLINE EXPLOSION CAUSES FIRE LOSS. South Chicago Dyer Suffers From Effects of Lighted Match Today. A lighted match or a cigar accldently dropped beside the gasolene tank in the yard of M. E. Schmidt, dyer and cleaner, and caused an explosion this morning in which twenty gallons of the liquid went up in the air. Fortunately nobody was injured. .The Are department .was summoned and extinguished the flames before they could do very much damage to the surrounding buildings. The loss caused by the explosion was nominal. ASK TO USE VACANT GROUND. Forgelners In Kensington and West Pulman Want to Slake Gardens on Unocapted Lands. Lithuanians and Bohemians, representing more than 200 unemployed foreigners living In West Pullman and Kensington, asked Lieutenant Mooney yesterday for permission to raise vegetables on the unocupied land in the suburbs for the support of their fami lies. Mooney promised that he would take up the matter with the owners of the land who are the West Pullman Land association and the Calumet Canal and Dock company and the stockhold ers of the Pullman Car company. Petty Thefts at Railroad Shops. Anumber of petty thefts have been recorded at the Nickle Plate shops and ; a force of detectives have been at work trying to find out the guilty person or i persons. Jack Garriety Back in Harness. Jack Garriety, the popular police operator at the Fifteenth precinct station has returned from his trip to whit his friends thought California, but there was where Jack put one over for al lthe time he was visiting friends at Mount Clemens and Ann Arbor, Mich. Mr. Garriety will resume his duties at the South Chicago station next Monday morning. Horse-Beater Arrested. Alexander Smith was fined $25 and costs for beating his horse over the face with the butt end of a whip. He was prosecuted by George Nolan, of the Illinois Humane society. Mr. Smith, was caught in the mud at Sixty-third street and Kimbark avenue and was beating the horse unmercifully when he was arrested. Vessel Movements. South Chicago, 111. Morris Salmonson, clerk in the marriage license department of the county clerk's office was astonished yesterday when Hiram L. Pease, 651S Minerva avenue, told him he was seventy-six years old and wanted a marriage license to marry Mrs. Minerva V. Spencer, sixty-three years old. "Are you sure about your age," exclaimed Salmonson."You surely can't be that old." Mr. Pease smiled and said that he was that old and wished to become the husband of Mrs. Minerva V. Spencer. "Well I never would have believed," said Salmonson. A force of about ten detectives in the employ of the Rock Is':and railroad were detailed at 94th street and the Rock Island tracks last evening on account of the recent thefts that are regularly accuring on the tracks. April 24, 25, 2G, cars were broken into and articles stolen, so it was thought best to put a large force of the detec tives at work with the possibllityof getting them. No one attempted to get into the cars while the detectives were there, but one man was chased by them as he was prowling along the tracks by cars loaded with potatoes. A car on the Calumet Electric Railway jumped the track at Ninety-fourth street ond the Nickel Plate shops yesterday morning and delayed traffic for an hour. The car was going at a high rate of speed when the car hit a switch, almost turning Che car over. Henry Krieps, 10318 Indianapolis avenue, East Side, has given his buffet a thorough cleaning and the interior has bsen redecorated which now gives it a snug and homelike appearance. A big, husky truckman was belaboring his horses with a bullwhip, accompanying each stroke with a tor rent of horrid profanity that could be heard a block. A timid looking gentleman stood near, waiting patiently for an opening, and when the psychological moment arrived said in a soft voice: "My dear fellow, in aoquiring your education you saaiy neglected the simplest rules of oral hygiene." Horses Are Badly Burned. A. Furth, of 9440 Commercial avenue, lost a valuable team of horses this morning when the animals stepped on a live wire which was grounded at Ninety-first street and Erie avenue. While the horses were not killed outright, they were so badly burned that it is thought they will have to be killed. They were valued at $350. Principal Denies Story. Dear Sir An article entitled "Children Take Chance In Lives," which appeared in your issue of May 6, does an injustice to the Gallestel school in several par ticulars.
