Preparing Light Opera. The Ladies' Club of the Catholic church are busy rehearsing a light opera which they- will stage at their assembly room In the near future. The title of the operetta Is "Twin Sisters" and the cast includes many ladies of talent who have appeared before the public In the past. It will be staged two successive evenjngs with a partly changed musical program each evening. Out of town musical talent will assist in the presentation of the opera. Hold Kegular Meeting. The Volunteer Fire Department held Its monthly meeting at the town station. A committee was appointed to start the ball rolling for the monster celebration at the fair grounds where the -Volunteer departments, of Lake and Porter counties hold their tournament In the late summer. Town Board Meets. The town board met last evening for their adjourned session. Business connected with sewer, sidewalks, and street paving occupied their attention. Resolutions passed recently were considered and adopted. Scott Babbitt and wife vacated the saloon building on Main street last j week and John Thomas takes posse3jsion this week with Charles Taylor as assistant. It is said that Mrs. Babbitt will start a boarding house in the house on West street recently purchased by a Mrs. Frances Kilborn. Mrs. W. A. Scheddell entertained a company of ladles at bridge last evfcnt Ing in honor of Mrs. Mary McDonnell of I Chicago. All present report a most enjoyable time. Mrs. "Warren Hayward and Mrs. John Dally have Issued a number of invitations for an 8 o'clock party this: evening in honor of Miss Josephine Badenoch of Chicago. Ed Daviss of Chicago was here on business yesterday. Mr and, Mrs. Clarence Rudolph of Hammond are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Martin Rudolph and it is reported that young Mrs. Rudolph is on the sick list. Jake Lavene, proprietor of the Boston store here, and manager of a department store in Michigan City,, was in town last evening on business connected with his Interests here. Vernon Parry transacted business in Hammond and Chicago for the Pioneer Mounmental works, yesterday. Claude Allman was in Hammond yesterday transacting business for the real estate firm of Allman Brothers & Dinwiddle. Mrs. Louise Seems was among the Chicago visitors yesterday. Oliver O. Forsyth of Chicago was here yesterday on legal business. Harry Hart and wife - of Chicago spent the week end with Mr. Hart's parents on South Court street. Executive Committee Meets. ' . The executive committee of the republican club will meet tonight for the purpose of adopting the constitution and bylaws which were recently drawn j up by a committee appointed for .that purpose. Many matters of interest will also be discussed and all the members are requested to be present. The meeting was called by President George Manlove. Looking for Location. Mrs. A. C. McCarty and son. W. W. McCarty, of Salem, O., are spending a few days in Gary looking for a location to establish themselves in business. They expect to move to Gary in the near future. Miss Hermena Fritsche of Lake Station has taken a position with the Jeffrey and Morgan company. She began yesterday morning. Charles Renwik of Hammond spent the day yesterday visiting friends in Gary. J. W. Call received notification from Senator Beveridge yesterday that his recommendation to the appointment of postmaster at Gary by the president had been confirmed by the senate. It will be many days more, however, before Mr. Call will begin his duties, as he will have to sign "a bond and receive a commission before he can be instated. This will probably not be before the first of June. Saturday evening the contract for the furnishing of coal to the public schools was let by the board to the Gary Coal company. The price of the successful bidder was $7.15 for hard coal and $3.25 for soft. There were four other bidders for the supply. .Mrs. Bert Call of Chicago, whose husband is the trial lawyer of the steel company, spent the day with relatives in Gary yesterday. Mrs. J. W. Call, wife of the new postmaster, left yesterday for Los An geles, Cal., where she will spend several months visiting her son. The democratic club meets Wednesday night for the purpose of perfecting arrangements for the barbecue and convention and to make arrangements for the final spurt. . Th? meeting to select delegates to the county convention will be held Thursday. The Gary Eagles are preparing to take an active part in the state con vention which, will be 'r.d in Hammond May 13 and 14. They intend to help financially as well as in assisting in the arrangements. They will attend the convention in a body. Lloyd Parsons of Hammond spent the day in Gary yesterday on business . N. R. Wood, manager of the BormanWatson Drug company, went to Hammond last night. He expects to move his family from Hammond to Gary some time this week. P. F. Charpel and F. M. After an illness of several months. Clay C. Collins returned from Morocco, Ind., yesterday .morning feeling much better than he did and thinks he will soon be able to resume his duties as desk sergeant in the. local police station. Mr. Switzer, of the East Side, was a Whiting visitor Sunday evening. ROBERTSDALE. Despite the inclement weather an unusually large audience was in attendance at the Easter exercises given by the children of the Evangelical Sunday school at the church Sunday evening. The recitations and dialogues by the children were exceptionally good as also was the selection rendered by the senior and Junior choirs. The solo by Mrs. E. Guilhuff of Chicago was well received.
