A very pretty but quiet wedding took place Sunday morning at 8 o'clock when Miss Lena Saager of Chicago and Waiter Kunert of this city were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents in Chicago. The ceremony -was witnessed by only the near relatives and friends of the bridal couple. The service was read by the Rev. . Flretag of the German Lutheran , Church. The bride wore a handsome sown of white lace with pearl trimmings , and carried a huge bouquet of bride's roses. She wor a wreath 6f lillies-of-the-valley. The bride was attended by Miss Lunda Kunert of this city who wore a princess gown of ' white pearline silk and carried a bouquet of white roses. Bruno Saager attended the groom as best man. Following the ceremony an elaborate wedding breakfast was served. The tables were very beautifully decorated with carnations, roses and greenery. Mr. and Mrs. Kunert will make their home in East Side. The newly married couple received many handsome gifts of cut glass, silver, china and linens from their relatives and friends. Both young people have many friends In Hammond who extend them their hearty congratulations. PARTY FOR COMING BRIDE. Mrs, Eugene Cooper of . Carroll . street gave a very pleasant party last evening in honor "of Miss Rose Kolb whose marriage to John Shearer takes place ,May 7. The evening was passed very pleasantly with various games after which music was enjoyed and refreshments served. A QUIET WEDDING. The marriage of Harry Morrle of Peru, Ind., and Miss Edna Fern Thaiman, of Rochester, was celebrated at the Methodist parsonage this morning .. t 8 o'clock. Having signified their wish to be married . by their former pastor, Rev. W. F. Switzer, they arrived on the 7:25 Erie. train and after the wedding .were entertained at a wedding breakfast. They left for Chicago on the forenoon train. Miss Thalman is the accomplished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthan Thalman of Rochester. Mr. Morris has been engaged with his father, Charles A, Morris, in connection with the McCaffrey wholesale grocery firm of Peru. The young couple will make their home in Peru, Ind. POST LENTEN DANCE. The Hammond branch of Mail Carriers, No. 859, gave a very pleasant dance last eevening in the Masonic temple, that was very well attended by out of town and Hammond guests. The party was very nicely arranged by the committee in charge and the members are receiving congratulations for the success of the - entertainment today. The program of -sixteen dances opened about 8:30 o'clock. ' AI.UMNI MEETING. The Hammond high school alumni as sociation met last evening in the Cen tral school kindergartefi room for the annual business meeting. There was not as good an attendance as had been expected but business of importance was discussed. Another meeting will be balled for next Monday when it is urged that all members attend. The election of officers took place and the following were elected: I President George Miller. Vice president Miss Grace Ducomb. Secretary Miss Minnie Turner. ' Treasurer Miss Eugenia Knotts. SURPRISE PARTY. Avery pleasant birthday surprise party was given In honor of Ed Heckleman last evening at his home in Truiran avenue. The evening was spent very pleasantly with games and music after which refreshments were served. The guests were: Misses Gertrude Mader, Sadie Liston, Stella Walle, and Ruth McKeown; Messrs. Dean Campbell, Ed Heckleman, Ed Sherby, Floyd llamacher and Joe Housley. EMBROIDERY CLUB MEETS. Mrs. Charles R. Dyer entertained the members of the Embroidery club very pleasantly yesterday afternoon at her heme in South Hohman street. The afternoon was spent in the club's usual way with embroidery work after which the hostess served her guests with a delicious luncheon. Another meeting will be held in two weeks, although the place of meeting has not yet been de-. cided. The members present yesterday were: Mesdames Ralph Pierce, W. Ray Hatch, L. L. Belle Lund and Mr. Taylor left Hammond at noon today to attend the grand chapter of the Order of Eastern Stars at Indian apolis. The delegates to the conven tion are the matron, associate matron and patron of the local order. HEARD FROM. Word has been received from Misses Lena and Catherine Eisenhutt that they have arrived at Hot Springs, Ark., and are enjoying the trip very much. The young ladies will not return to Hammond for about six weeks. LEAVES HAMMOND. , Marshall Crosby will leave Hammond the last of the week to joint the Mt. Vernon baseball team, with whom he will play during the coming season. COME FROM EAST CHICAGO. A crowd of young people from East Chicago are expected in Hammond this evening to attend the dancing class in Long's hall. An unusually large attendance is expected as this is the first party after the Lenten season. CONVENTION" AT LOWELL A large number of officers and members of the Pythian Sisters of Hammond and Whiting left this morning on the 9:10 Monon for Lowell, where they will attend the district convention of the Pythian Sisters. The Hammond ladies will be in charge of the work and this evening will do the drill work. A large reception will be given in honor of the visiting members this evening. The Hammond ladies anticipate very pleasant entertainment until Thursday, when they will return home. The convention was held last year at Michigan City. Among the Hammond ladies who attended were: Mesdames Love, William Love, Stevens, Charles Bostwick, Frank Housen, Charles Luthman, Clara Conroy, John Haney, C. L. Wolf, Lou Aldrich, Leon, Hupp, Dobbins, Weynan, Robert Holcraft, Hubbard, Lc,wis Alene McCoy and Dr. Mary E. Jack son. Building Addition to Already Large Factory -Are Running Full Blast. The Western Grain Products company is making extensive Improvements In it3 plant in West Hammond. Frank Shumacher, one of the directors of the company was in Hammond this morning on his way to Chicago. "No matter how bad the times," said Mr. Shumacher, "we are running under full steam continually and it is necessary for us to make enlargements. The work has been in progress for some time." It is thought that the increased ca pacity will enlarge the plant by onethird. SUPPOSED BURGLAR SHOT BY NEIGHBOR DIES. BERNARD JOHNSTON, JR. DIES AT WEST HAMMOND. Young Son of Well Known Officer Passes Away as Result of Spinal Meningitis. Barnard Johnston, 5 years old, the oldest son of Barney Johnston, one of the West Hammond police officers, died ast night' from spinal meningitis. The funeral will take place next Thursday morning when funeral services will be held at All Saints church at 8 o'clock. The remains will be taken to Mt. Olivet for burial. Officer Johnston and his family live a 319 West State street, and now have three children living. DEATH PENALTY FOR THE JACKSNIPE. Hunters May Kill Shore Birds Without Bear of Arrest In the Future. A jacksnipe is not a water fowl. It has been so decided by Attorney General Bingham in a legal opinion just submitted to Z. T. Sweeney, state fish and game commissioner. Therefore the attorney general's opinion Is practically a death sentence to the little longlegged shore bird so unfortunate as to be "good to eat." WHEN THE MUMMY MOVES. There may be nothing new under the sun, but "When the Mummy Moves" Is certainly an original title for a story. While men are not eligible in this competition it is probable that it will interest the whole family circle. REV. W. H. JONES PAYS FRIENDS A VISIT. Rev. W. II. Jones, formerly pastor of the First Baptist church of Hammond and one of the city's most popular pastors, was in Hammond from Belvidere, 111., yesterday and called on some of his friends here in church circles. In speaking of the "revival" at the Baptist church, Rev. Jones expressed surprise at the methods used and said: "Well If they use me in that fashion I won't remain in Hammond." Mr. Jones returned to his home in Illinois last night. WILL ADVERTISE FOR BIDS. The architect of the new addition which is to be made to St. Margaret's hospital was in the city yesterday and ' made preparations to advertise for bids on the new building.
