Many Opinions as to Location of Corner Where Traffic of the Greatest Arteries of the City Should Converge.
One of the most interesting questions to the business man in Gary and those about to locate here, is where the future business center of the city will be. There is no question but what it will lie at the intersection of some street and Broadway, but there is soma doubt about which east and west street will be the main thoroughfare in Gary in time to come. The first question to be asked by a prospective investor is: "Where will be the main part of town?" It is usually answered by a real estate dealer somewhat in accordance with the location of his land, and by the merchant, if the location be an important factor, as near his place of business as reason would Justify. To a disinterested observer, however, the matter presents many and varied aspects. There have been predictions made that the center of Gary would lie as far north as Fifth avenue and as far south as Twenty-second street. There is a multitude also that would choose the streets lying between these two, among the favorites being Sixth, Seventh, Eleventh and Nineteenth avenues. Way down at the south end the property holders will tell you that the center of a town of 200,000 in habitants will necessarily be at least a mile south of the lake, because of the fact that the town must grow south If it cannot grow in the opposite direction. Hence the center of business would necessarily shift to a reasonable distance south, which they think would lie from Nineteenth avenue to Twentysecond street. It seems at the present time, however, that most of the business men will rely on business activities center ing at either Eleventh. Seventh or Sixth avenues. Eleventh like Fifth has the advantage of being a through street, running to Toleston and for a mile and a half east. Here the traffic from the west and south should converge for several years to come. The advantages to Fifth, Sixth and Seventh avenues are apparent when it is taken into consideration their proximity to the stee mills and other large industries which are bound to be built along the lake front and the numerous railroads lying in that section of the city. In going from work the laboring man and employe f the Wg concerns will have a tendency to patronize the merchants nearest their places of busiLatest Events In the Markets GRAIN AND PROVISION MARKET Month Wheat May . ' ness; traffic will be controlled to a large degree by the location of the industries along the lake front and
trarnc should converge at Rrnadwnr and the east and west streets which are most accessible to the various in dustries. This fact should be favorable to Fifth avenue, as this street will be located nearest the factories bordering on the three railroads on the north m ar,x lake Michigan and the Indiana Steel corporation. Fifth avenue also has the advantage of being a "throusrh srrPr. and according to the present plans of the steel company, will be extended for a aistance of six and one-half miles west and three or four miles east. This will make it one of the longest streets in me state. In noting the main thoroughfare of uie city or Chicago it might help to determine the future business center of Gary. Here, State street is the great artery of traffic and is In th snm fix to position with reference to the lane as is 1 ifth avenue in Gary. It is not located as it is sometimes thought necessary in the heart of the city but rather in the extreme east. In most cities throughout the country it is found that they are platted in the shape of a fan, with one of the streets skirting the factories or a body of water on one side and the others feeding it from every other direction of the compass. In the center of the town Fifth avenue will be tapped by the merchants of Broadway and parallel streets and the various industries and warehouses in dispensing and procuring supplies. On the exereme east and west with street cars traveling the thoroughfare it will serve to feed in the residents of the outlying districts. It will be used, also, because of its length as the connecting link between the cities lying to the east and west of Gary. In addition to these facts moreover, it is the main street which the Indiana Steel corporation has chosen to be the main east and west artery with the business center established at Fifth avenue and Broadway. They have already constructed two valuable buildings at this location, secured car service and a splendid ravine-. Thr seems to be no question therefore, but wnat tne steel corporation will do nil In Its power to make Fifth avenue the big intersecting street, in accordance with their original plans. rai SIONS Special Wire to The TIMES laneous lots, cases returned. CONTRACT LET FOR
L BUiLDfNG Standard Company Will Erect Gary's Fine StrucT tiire, the EmersonIT WILL COST $194,800.00 Difference of $110,000 Between Fig ures of Lowest and Highest , Bidders, Is Noted. The contract was let yesterday fo the building of the Emerson school in Gary and the Standard Construction company of Chicago was the success ful bidder, at a contract price of $194, S00. It is a strange thing that the difference between the highest and the lowest bid was exactly $110,000. The highest bidder was the Falkneau Con struction company of Gary. There has been no contract let in Lake county in recent years that has attracted so much attention. Yesterday the city of Gary swarmed with contractors and their assistants and the plum was evidently a juicy one, if the Interest shown is any criterion. In all there were twenty-four bid ders and they came all the way from St. Louis and New York and many of the Intervening cities. Evidently the right to say that they had built Gary's fioo.000 model school was a big con sideration to many of the contractors The building is to be built during the coming summer and the work of construction must begin by May 1, ac cording to agreement. The new build ing is to bo located on Carolina Etreet near Seventh avenue, and a great many rrten will be required to carry on the work of construction. The office of, the successful bidder is located in the First National Bank building in Chicago, and the Standard Construction company is reputed to be one of the most progressive in Chi cago. PLANS HOE BUILDING Indiana Harbor to Have New $20,000 Structure in Near Future. Mrs. M. L. Salinger is about to nut up a Jine $20,000 structure in Indiana namor, corner of Block and Mlchi gan avenue. The structure is to be used for hotel and store purposes and will have a irontage of fifty' feet on Michigan avenue and 126 feet on Block avenue. It will be two stories hisrh but the foundations are to be put In with a view to adding two more stories whpn conditions are BUch as will warrant the extra room. The lower floor will be divided into four stores, two of which will face Michigan avenue while the others will front on Block At present there are three one-storv tores on the site where the new structure is to be erected, and these are to be so adapted and remodeled that their identity will be lost in the handsome and modetn structure planned. Carl Anderson has the contract for the entire work of buildlnsr with th. exception of the steam heating plnnt and equipment and work will be begun at once. The three stores in the rear of the new building were built by Mr. Anderson four years ago. Mrs. Salinger is one of Indiana Harbor's most enterprising women and arleady owns several buildings in Indiana Harbor. Cnfc of these Mr. Anderson put up last fall just west of the Pennsylvania tracks. BOARD ISJ1 TRIP Danville Commercial Club Shows Gary Men Good Time. Whenever the Gary town board gets a little shaky on the franchise proposition they are taken on a junketing trip and shown the pleasures of travel as it is done with an Inexhaustible supply of money to dip into. For the second time the Gary town board has gone to Danville to look at the cars which are under construction there, and this time they were accompanied by representatives of the Gary Commercial club who have also threatened to kick out of the Gary & Interurban harness. The party had a glorious time. They all admit that. They were wined and dined to their heart's content and thff were puffed up like toads at the attention that was bestowed upon them. The Danville Commercial club helped things along and gave the party a banquet. The cars were inspected and were found to be perfectly constructed. They are to be shipped in a few days and the outlook is very encouraging, to say the least. At any rate they looked rosy to the junketers and they all came back very much pleased with the outing they had had. Those who went were C. V. Ridgley and C. H. Maloney, representing the Gary Commercial club. John Sears and Millard Caldwell, representing the Gary town board, and A. F. Knotts, who went in the place of his brother. President Thomas Knotts. Representing the Gary Q Interurban was Frank Gavit, and President Price of the Co-operative Construction company.
