SOUTH END WOMAN'S CLUB HOLDS LARGE MEETING.

Elaborate Program Rendered After , Which Delightful Lunch Js Served. One of the largest meeting: ever held by the South End Woman's club was held yesterday afternoon at their clutS yooms, 8951 Superior avenue. Long before the meeting was scheduled to .begin the members began arriving in such numbers that by 3 o'clock the Eouth End Center was crowded. An elaborate program was rendered after which a delightful lunch was served In

the banquet room. The meeting was a success from every standpoint and the members look forward to many more

each meetings. The program:

Want Park Fixed Up. Park baseball being the only sport

year, the fans are circulating a petition

to be forwarded to the South Park Com

missioners asking them to cover the Bessemer Park field with torpedo sand and to erect a screen backstop. Work

is being covered with lime stone and

ravel walks, which would ruin the

baseball grounds. The petition Is find-

ng ready signers and the fans are con

fident that they will gain their point.

of the First Methodist church. Miss Raker and Mrs. Tolman both re

Baker for three years. Now that the news Is out the young couple will leave

for an extended wedding tour through

the south where Mr. Tolman has many friends. The young couple were surprised at the bride's home last night when nearly forty friends gathered to rive-them a kitchen shower. The newly jnarrled couple were the recipients of many presents.

Good Friday Observed.

Good Friday was well observed throughout South Chicago. In the

Catholic and Episcopal churches the organs and chimes have been silenced

and will remain so until Easter Sunday

tomorrow. The day was also ob

served in the usual fashion by serving Red Cross hot buns and eliminating

meat from the usual bill of fare. The

public schools throughout South Chi

cago were closed yesterday and there

will be no school until Monday, There

was no masses observed in the Catho

lie churches today. Good Friday is the

only day on their church calender that

is omitted. Morning services were held yesterday in all of the Episcopal

churches.

LAKE NAVIGATION TO OPEN UP ON APRIL 25.

Broker Sullivan Expects Decrease Lake Trade This Season.

Lake navigation will open up the twenty-fifth of this month, according to En interview yesterday with Arthur Sullivan of the firm of D. Sullivan & Co., steamboat brokers down town. In speaking of the navigation season this year Mr. Sullivan said that naturally Jhere would be quite a decrease in the business this year, but that he did not think It would drop below 25 per cent of that of last year. Ranchman Visits South Chicago. G. Thomas Huchinson, a well known

western ranchman, was in South Chicago yesterday afternoon looking over

the city and shaking hands with some of his friends. Hutchinson is a large

ranchman in Nebraska where he owns

several small ranches. Mr. Hutchinson

frequently comes into Chicago with his cattle and nearly always takes a run down to South Chicago to see friends

here.

Another Street Car Accident. Henry Lang, living at 6740 Lexing

ton avenue, was the victim of a serious accident yesterday afternoon when

he fell off the platform of a rapidly moving street car at Seventy-ninth street and Stonj' Island avenue. When

he fell his left arm was thrown around his back and when he fell he broke it. He was at once taken to the nearby drug store where his arm was set and he was taken to the County hospital. Lang is single and lived with his sister

at the above address.

Run over By Street Car. George Hammon, 5 years old, living at 11987 Perry avenue, was probably seriously injured when he was run over by a street car at One Hundred and Nineteenth street and Perry avenue. He was In the act of crossing the street In front of a west-bound car when he did not see an east-bound car and was hit. He was taken to the hospital where he is in a serious condition. His legs were crushed, but it is thought that they will not have to be amputated.

Sent to Parental Home. Joseph Bi3hop and Joseph Sapunza, each 13 years old and pupils in the Gallistel and Wheeler schools respectively, were sent to the Parental home yesterday by Judge Tuthill of the Juvenile court. Both were inveterate
