Study Club Meets. The "Woman's Study club met for its last regular -meeting until fall, on Tuesday afternoon, April 14, at the home of. Miss Maud "Williams, east of town. The meeting was called to order by the president, and Mrs. Scheddell was appointed as one of the critics in the absence of Mrs. Dinwiddle. A very nice paper on Galileo was read by the hostess, which was followed by the table talk, led by Mrs. Harold H. Wheeler. After the critics' fr&ve their report the club was adjourned to meet at the library on May '5 for the annual business mpetlnfir. Married in Chicago. Miss Barbara Fatch, daughter . of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Fatch, and Mr. Nick Albert, were quietly married in Chicago yesterday in the presence of the immediate families of the bride and groom. They returned home last evening to celebrate their wedding. Mr. Albert, is a brakeman employed by the C, E. & I. railroad. The couple will make their future home in Chicago. Mrs. Albert was well known in Hammond, having visited friends there often. Doctor Has Fever. Dr. J. C. Gibbs is the latest victim to : be innocCulated with the "automophobia" virus and has been in Chicago recently investigating several new cures for it. One factory, there is turning out a remedy that seems to fit his case, and the doctor will probably invest before many days. Our Spring Poem. "We've spoken It's broken, "Winter's back. Not yet alack! Frank Mann, .who has been sick for some time, died at his home here yesterday afternoon, Ills death has been expected for some time and his relatives and children were at his bedside when the end came. Mr. Mann was over 80 jears of age and was well known throughout the county as a successful farmer, and was respected by all who knew him. Miss Claudia McMahan, who Is attending Ann Arbor university, is spending a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C McMahan, on East and South streets. John O. Bowers of Hammond was In town yesterday transacting legal business. - The automobile fever which has been attacking Clerk Shortrldge of late finally won out and he has purchased a Ford runabout with which he expects to make his business trips between Crown Point and Hammond seem like play. Albert Bossard and Anna Newman of Hammond were in town Tuesday and secured a marriage license. - Joseph Beattie of the Wlllowdale stock farm, was in Chicago transacting business yesterday. The Woman's society of St. Mary's Catholic church have purchased a beautiful and expensive new piano which will be used at their social gatherings. After Easter they will present a light opera on which they are now rehearsing, and the proceeds will go toward paying for the new instrument. James F. Rowins, formerly of Chicago and well known here, who has lived in Los Angeles, Cal., for the past few years, has disposed of his business and Interests there and expects in the fall to return east and make it his home, probably locating in Chicago. Will Lamberg, who has been employed by an electrical firm in Indianapolis, is spending a few days with his parents here. Will his a lucrative position and enjoys his work very much. Jake Kussmaul of Hammond, transacted business in town last evening. Mrs. Mary Krost, Mrs. Ed Krost and Miss Emma Krost enjoyed the day in Chicago yesterday. Fhuenus villiams and family were visiting friends yesterday in Chicago. Stephen Meyer, Charles Kelser and Leonard Fatch were Crown Pointers transacting business in Chicago Wed nesday. Mrs. Fred Carter visited friends in Hammond yesterday. Mrs. John B. Peterson and daughter, Belle, were Chicago visitors yester day. Mrs. Ed Sigler is recovering from i siege of sickness. VALPARAISO. The republican primaries for the nomination of candidates for the various township and county offices will be held throughout the county tomor row. The voting places in this city will be at the Salvation Army hall on West Main street. Delegates from the various precincts in the city to the county nominating convention to be held in the opera house at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, will be chosen at the opera house tomorrow evening at 8 o'clock. Charles McKeehan of Fort Wayne, assistant general passenger agent of this division of the Pennsylvania rail road, is in the city, having been called here by the death of his father, David McKeehan, who died Tuesday evening of paralysis. William Moore, jr., has gone to Gary, where he has secured a position. Rev. R. A. White of Chicago, who has spoken in this city on several oc casions, will deliver a stereopticon. lec ture on Venice In the University audi torium this evening. Mrs. John F. Perrine of Wheeler was in the city Tuesday on business. The funeral of David McKeehan, who died Tuesday evening, was held from the home ot Judge William Johnston
this afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. A. Oldenberg and Rev. William Bortholomew. The interment was at Maplewood. Ben Schenck has been elected captain, and Wallace Wilson manager of the new Valparaiso high school base ball team. The boys are trying to arrange a game for Saturday when the Porter county high school oratorical cont.est will be held at the University auditorium. There will be services at the Episcopal church tomorrow. Good Friday, evening, at 7:30 o'clock. Mrs. George M. Dodge is giving a "coffee' this afternoon for the benefit of the Civic association. Mr. Taylor is teaching the harmony classes at the university in the absence of Prof. E. W. Chaffee, who has been called to Los Angeles, Cal., on account of the death of his father. Prof. W. F. Gaskins expects to leave for the far west today on business. He will return about the first of August for about a month, after which he will be accompanied by his wife to the coast, where he has secured a splendid position as head of the music department of one of the leading western universities.

EAST CHIGAGOJNDIANA HARBOR A number of the members of .the Eastern Star from Indiana Harbor and East Chicago went to Gary Tuesday to attend a 6 o'clock dinner and afterwards to be present at the initiatory work of the order there. The ladies composing the party were Mesdames A. Thomas, E. Schwab, C. E. Fowler, J. Bowers and Abe Ottenhelmer. They all remained in Gary Tuesday night, returning home Wednesday morning. Margaret Brown, daughter of Dr. Brown, is very low with scarlet fever. Henry Lundt, the man you can see any place in Lake county at almost any time, was here yesterday. Miss Florence Lewis was In Chicago yesterday. The Odd Fellows had their regular meeting Tuesday night. Mr. and Mrs. Jock McKeever were In Chicago last night attending the circus. Jack says there is nothing like seeing the. ponies run, even If it's only in a circus ring. , Jack McCready , and . family have moved from Olcott avenue to the home of Mr. McCready's parents, on Magoun street. The . eighth grade basket ball teams will meet again tonight at McKlnley school. " Mrs. Harry Johnson of Magoun ave nue is 111 with typhoid fever. The Misses Lillian and Agnes Nel son were in Hammond yesterday on a shopping expedition. Harry Cohen was in Chicago yester day. The Gary Construction company paid off last Tuesday. News reached here of the death of Camiel De Vos, yesterday, from typhoid fever at Kewanee, 111. Mr. De Vos will be remembered as a puddler in the republic mills for a number of years. He will be buried at Kewanee. Miss Angellne Smith of South Chi cago, who has been on a typhoid fever case in Whiting for the last week, was in town yesterday and took dinner with Herman Flehre at the Maine res taurant. Miss Edith Evans bought her Easter outfit in Chicago yesterday. J. E. Newell, who has been sick with typhoid fever in Garrett, Ind., has fully recovered and has resumed his duties as principal of the high school. Judge William A. Reiland went to Chicago yesterday to see the "Regeneration" at the Studebaker. Jake Friedman will in the future represent Julius Friedman & Co. in Lake county. Walter Spencer and Albert Lewis were in Chicago Tuesday attending the ball game. Mrs. J. S. Reiland of One Hundred and Forty-eighth street and White Oak avenue, who is regarded as one of the most indefatigable and delightful hostesses in East Chicago, gave a luncheon Tuesday to a number of her lady friends. New Lodge at Gary. An order of the Knights of Columbus will be started in Gary by the state organizer beginning on the last Sunday in May. One of the members of the organization stated today that he thought beyond question the lodge would be able to close its charter with at least 100 members. The fact that the Catholics are so strong in the city will have a great deal to do with the success of the organization. Suburban To Be Sued. It is said that in the near future action wil be started by several Gary attorneys against the Lake Shore and South Bend Interurban for damages for pumping water from the excavations from the abutments which they are building on the line at Miller. The water is being pumped into the back yards of the residents of the town until in some cases it has flooded their floors. The foreman on the work, who has been responsible for the flooding of that portion of the town, has been requested repeatedly to stop the practice, but he has so far ignored them. Temporary Fire Station Started. Work was started yesterday on the erection of a temporary fire station at the corner of Fifth avenue and Massachusetts street. The building will be just large enough to house the hand reel and hose and will be under the supervision of Chief of Police Martin. The building will have a big fire alarm installed so the police on their beats can be called to do fire duty when it becomes necessary. It is expected the building will be complted this week so that the reel can be put in ready for business. A new magazine is about to be published In Gary known as the Parish Monthly. The magazine will contain about twenty-six pages of syndicate reading matter together with a sec tlon devoted to local Interests. The monthly will be edited and under the supervision of the local parish of the Catholic church. Mrs. John W. Call, wife of the new postmaster, will leave this week for Los Angeles, Cal., where she will spend sixty days in visiting her son, who is employed by the White Steamer com pany. As this Is regarded as the best time of the year to be In California Mrs. Call will certainly enjoy her self. W. G. Hay, president of the Gary State Bank and A. B. Keller, the as sistant cashier, are moving their fam ilies today to VanBuren street, where they will reside in the future. They both formerly lived In Chicago. This is the termination of a threemonths contest among the Companions and when the honor roll was called. It was found that Court Golden Rod No 136, was at the lead, having initiated forty-four new members since Jan. 1. Henry Burge has begun the con struction of a cement walk in front of his residence in South Wheeler. Walter Tarnow, who has been at tending school in Laporte, Ind., is home for a few days. Mrs. L K. Quite a few were out to the yell practice Wednesday evening and it is thought that Wheeler will be well represented in yells, chorus and oration at the Porter county oratorical contest, to be given in the Auditorium at Valparaiso April IS. Nichols, Drs. Gooder and Iddings and Attorney Belshaw have the automobile fever, and are casting the optics around to purchase the latest and best makes. The production of "Under the Laurels" by our high school students at the opera house Tuesday night was attended by a larger audience than at the first production. As before, all in the cast don fine. The company will play at Ellis' opera house, Rensselaer, Friday night. A litter of young gray foxes are on exhibition at Maxwell's hardware and implement store., They were caught by Wilbur Morey.
