CROWN POINT NEWS Take Home Prisoners. . Sheriff Carter and Deputy ' Trost were In Hammond . yesterday and returned last evening with seven prisoners whose trials had been heard in the superior court. Nellie Williams, alias "Little Bit," the dusky wench from Gary, was sentenced to sixty days imprisonment and will serve her time in the county bastile here. Sam Shunk, the man whom she assailed, was also brought down and will serve out his fine and costs for carrying concealed weapons. New Term Next Monday. The county clerk's office is busy this week getting the new bar docket for the April term of the Lake circuit court. The term will start on Monday, April 20. Owing to the inconvenience in transporting law books, ftc. from the vaults to the town hall, two rooms will be temporarily fitted up on the second floor of the court house. This plan has been agreed upon by all par ties concerned and they all look forward to the time when they will be permanently installed in their new quarters. Moon & Hale, the paving contractors, started their work here on Main street and hope to finish the part they gravelled in a short time. MIS3 Charlton and sister, with- two charges, leave this week for Chicago en route for New York, from which port they sail on May 2 for a two years visits in England and Europe. They leave many friends who will miss them but they all Join In wishing them bon voyage. Miss Ruby Brown and her mother "were called to Laporte last week on account of the serious illness of Mrs. Brown's sister, but will return today Is passed. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Jones of Court street spent the week end with friends In Hammond. Miss Marie Hansen, the librarian, returned to her duties yesterday after an absence of several days, during which time she visited relatives and friends in Hammond and Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Piepho of Brunswick were in the county seat yesterday on business connected with the estate of Mrs. Plepho's father, the lata Dr. Groman. L. Henderlong, the lumber man, transacted business in Chicago yesterday. ' Miss Helena Mundt was a Chicago : visitor yesterday In the interests of her millinery business. GARY NEWS Odd Fellows' Entertainment. The Gary Odd Fellows have made arrangements to give a series of eight entertainments beginning with the one on April 21. At the first one the Barnard family of musicians and Miss Nellie Flannery, an elocutionist will be the main attraction. $75,000 Parochial School. Father Jensen of the Catholic church is planning to construct in the near future a $75,000 parochial school building on the church property at Sixth and Polk streets. For the the 'building will also be used for a cnurch as the church is not in a position to construct a church building at the present time and the school building will serve both purposes. Saloonkeepers To Meet. The regular meeting of the Saloonkeepers association will be held Monday, April 19 in Bennet's hall. It has been rumored about for some time that they Intended to take concerted action against the prohibition wave that Is sweeping the country. This, however, is denied by many of the leading members that is even contemplated in Gary to their knowledge and if there is any it has not gained much headway. Case Is Continued. The Cortez-Valesco case which real estate dealers were charged with selling lots in Gary to foreigners and then turning over to them abstracts for lots wnicn tney had never shown them and which they didn't buy, came up before Judge Fitzgerald yesterday afternoon. Part of the evidence was heard and the case was then continued until next Monday. Miss Marie McKenna, Miss Lottie and Belle Donovan spent the evening, Saturday, roller-skating at San Souci park. The Eisler case, in which the defendant is charged with violating the pure food law has been set for next Saturday afternoon before Judge Huber. It is probable that the defendant will demand a Jury trial. The police of Gary wish to announce through Thh Times that they desire to enter Into a contest with any team of men of any or all the police forces in the county to determine the champion revolver shot of the county. The locals believe that In Martin, Dowllng and Law they have a combination that can't be beat by any three policemen In this section of the state. The men are anxious to try out with any three on the other forces and particularly Hammond. An effort will be made to have an annual "shoot", for policemen of the county. Upon agreement it has been decided that the local barber shops will close after May 1 on Sunday. Ever since Barber shops have been located in Gary they have been kept open until noon on the Sabath and this practice will be discontinued. Sheriff F. S. The explosion at Aetna yesterday morning was plainly heard here and the shock caused all the buildings In town to shake for a few seconds but no damage was done. William Tyler was a visitor at Valparaiso yesterday. A pleasant birthday surprise party was held last Friday evening at the home of Mrs. Emma Coleburn in honor of her 49th birthday anniversary. About twenty-five neighbors and friends were present. Mrs. Carl Sampelson was a Valparaiso visitor yesterday. Miss Fonetta Newcomb, who has been visiting here at the home of Mrs. Roda T.oothill, for several weeks, returned to her home in Atwood, Ind., yesterday. Attorney and Mrs. R. R. Peddicord were guests of friends at Valparaiso yesterday. Miss Minnie Busse went to Chicago yesterday to visit friends for a few days. Hammond Man Gets It. Charles Gills of Hammond has purchased the blacksmith shop of Peter Hayes on New York avenue, taking possession yesterday. Hr. Hayes has not yet decided what vocation he -will follow. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Harr moved yesterday from the Pedersen block to their home In New York avenue which they have recently purchased. Jerry O'Neii was the guest of friends in Austin Sunday. Mrs. John Hannephin and Miss F. H. Stewart spent Sunday with the former daughter. Mrs. Kathryn Spring of Austin and Harry Hannephin of Chicago. P. J. Curtain has purchased the building of the Standard Oil company which was used as a store house for the carpenters and painters of the concern and, moved It to the rear of his house for a kitchen. The Whiting high school celebrated their victory at the Lake County Oratorical contest by holding a picnic in Robertsdale park yesterday afternoon. This means was used in preference to the students going to the other schools in a body as Is usually the custom. Mr. and Mrs. John P. Obenshain and daughter, Helen and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Thomas of Park Manor saw Rlngllng Brothers circus in Chicago Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beaublen and daughter Elnore, visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Ben Rich at their home In Englewood. A large class were confirmed at the German Lutheran church Sunday morn Ing by Rev. Ph. Wille. The crowd con sisting of friends and relatives of the members began to gather early and by the time services begun there was not an empty seat In the church. The mem bers constituting the class were five girls and five boys, they being: Laura Trowe, Elsie Shimlnsky, Martha Lehr, Hilda Ahlgren and Anna Sass, Law rence Smith, Ernest Vater. The church was decorated with potted plants and cut flowers present ing a most beautiful spectacle.
