CROWN POINT NEWS Will Send Big Delegation. Crown Point is planning to send a large delegation to the county high Bchool oratorical contest to be held in Hammond tomorrow. A special car will be chartered from the Erie and it is . said the company will make special rates to the delegation Crown Point has every hope of winning the first prize in the orations and want a leading place in the chorus awards. : List of Letters. Carter a Busy Man.' Sheriff Carter is a busy man these days putting in full time transporting prisoners from the county Jail to the Superior court at Hammond. Quite frequently he has charge of about eight prisoners hand-cuffed together, and anyone that thinks the sheriff's office consists only in looking pleasant want to get a snapshot of Carter these mornings. Crown Point Confident. The pupils of the Crown Point high Bchool, consisting of Miss Hazel Smith, who delivers the oration at the oratorical contest tomorrow night, and the members of the chorus, gave an "exhibition of their abilities at the Methodist church Monday evening to a number of "critics" and a crowd of admirers. Flattering reports are heard on all sides and Crown Point's stock, as a possible winnter at the contest ' tomorrow night is conceded to be above par. Mrs. John Beng and son have rented the Barr farm, west of town, and will .commence to work the land soon. Miss Mary Pinter, a trained nurse well known here, is reported very sick at the home of her brother, John Pinter of "Wheatfleld, Ind. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. George Bartholomew, on Monday, a baby girl. Mrs. ' Wm. Nicholson was called to Hammond today to the beside of her daughter, Mrs. John C. Agnew of Webb street, who is threatened with typhoid fever. Oliver Wheeler is reported on the tick list. Charley Taylor has resigned his position as bartender at Scott Babbitt's saloon. Mrs. John B. Peterson and daughter, Miss Belle, were Chicago visitors yesterday. Mrs. Edwin Davis Is spending a few days with relatives in Crown Point. Charles Lamberg and Ed Knight transacted business in Hammond, Whiting and East Chicago yesterday. Harry Minas, proprietor of the 5 and 10 cent store in Hammond, transacted business in town Monday. Irl Rockwell was a Gary visitor yesterday in the interest of the Meeker Missery here. . .. Thomas Highland and Rose Allen, William Antlo and Ethel Emboder, both Hammond couples, were in Crown Point Monday to secure marriage licenses. Mrs. Mathlas Boney and Mrs. Ed Mee of the Hotel Carleton returned this morning to Hammond after a visit with Crown Point, friends. John Gerlach, who has been" seriously ill at his home, is reported considerably better this morning. ' Adam Gerlach is in Highlands today on business for the Aetna Life Insurance company. GRIFFITH. Mrs. William Johnson of Ross was here yesterday morning on her way to Hammond. Matt Grimmer, our north side medchant, made a business trip to the city yesterday. C. M. Barney was a Chicago visitor yesterday. . Mr. KIser returned last evening from several days' visit with friends in Ohio. Mrs. William Demmons of Crown Point was the guest of relatives here yesterday. There is some talk of replacing the old gasoline street lights with a kero sene light which burns a mantle. It .is guaranteed to give as strong a light ;as those run by gasoline and at the same time being cheaper and absolutely certain to burn. The old lights have proven a failure and have not been lighted for months. HOBART. The fire department was called out , again Monday evening about 8:50 o'clock, but as usual their services were ,not required. Fire started on the out side of the Wettengel , building near the Fort Wayne depot, occupied as a grocery by William Tyler, and caused no little excitement in that neighbor hood for a few minutes. Mr. Tyler was just . closing his store for the i evening when the flames were discov ered and soon the neighbors were in formed" and the blaze extinguished by a bucket brigade. No one seems know what started the fire. . Mr. and Mrs. w. M. poster were guests Wednesday of friends in Chi cago. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Springman were Valparaiso visitors 'Wednesday. The Hobart delegation, consisting of about two hundred, will leave Hobart tomorrow by special train via the Pennsylvania lines at 3 p. m. to attend the oratorical contest at Hammond. EOBERTSDALE. "Spears, wife of Dr. Spears, and daughter Gladys, left yesterday for Colorado Springs. Dr. Spears accompained them as far as Chicago. Mrs. Spears- has spent the greater part of the winter in the west and returned home just a short time ago. apparently much improved in health. How ever, the raw weather has proven too much for her and she was forced to leave again for a more genial climate. Mrs. Sidney Veaco and her sister, Miss Wilma Urle, went to Chicago yes terday to arrange for music lessons for Miss Urie. Attorney Ballard of the firm of Stan ton and Ballard of Gary, was in East Chicago yesterday. Maurice Bennett of Gary visited East Chicago yesterday. He is defendant in a case for the possession of a saloon building here. East Chicago is once more agitated over the failure of the, C, I. & S. to remove the sign Calumet from its station in East Chicago. Circulars have been issued - regarding an excursion from Chicago to Danville, 111., in which East Chicago is referred to by the name of Calumet, which gas grown to be so obnoxious to East Chlcagoans. ' Mrs. George Mitchell of Olcott avenue is ill with the grip. Arthur- Keenan and Dave Campbell were in Chicago Tuesday night to see "The Man of the Hour" at McVlckers. Fred Fife is back from the hospital. His daughter, Eugenia, who has been suffering from scarlet fever, is much better. The house has undergone a thorough fumigation and Is no longer under quarantine. J. G. Allen, cashier of the. First National bank, was sick yesterday and obliged to remain at his home in Beacon street. Plumbers' Strike Ended. The thirty-five plumbers who have been on a strike in Gary, returned to work yesterday morning after several points had been conceeded by both sides. The wages of $5.20 per day, which they demanded, an increase of of 20 cents, was conceeded by the plumbers, and also the eight hour working schedule. On the other hand the plumbers will never be conceded the right which they ask in having none but the sons of plumbers . learn the trade. One of the plumbers stated this morning that If he never employes another man, he will never sign an. agreement of that character. This seemed to be the principle point of contention. Attorney Kept His Word. Attorney Clarence Bretsch returned to Gary this afternon bringing with him one of the famous defendants in Servian riot cases, Mike Berich, whom he defended, and succeeded in getting equitted. Mr. Bretsch has constantly asserted that he would free the man and he kept his promise. Berich looks but little the worse for his confinement in jail: Hotel Manager 111. J. A. Klein, manager of the Gary hotel, has left for Mount Clemens, Mich., where he will spend a few weeks to recuperate from a recent illness from which he has suffered while in Gary. Mr. Klein was directly affected by the change in climate from the heat of Oklahoma where he was formerly located, to the chilly breezes of Gary. Mr. Klein's wife accompanied him to Mount Clemens. Dr. H. M. Hosmer has now changed the location of his offices from the Brunswick cigar store to the Gary hotel. The change will be but temporarily however, for in a few days he expects to be permanently located in his fine new office in the Smith building. . Messrs. C. W. Brown and M. Weil, two of the prominent members of- the Gary lodge of Rebekahs, which was recently installed, were guests of the Valparaiso order, which Initiated several new members Tuesday night. They report a most enjoyable time and were treated royally while they remained In the city, they returning this evening. Mr. Edward Kurnman of East Chicago, was a visitor in Gary Wednesday. Mr. Samuel Sogovits of the American Light and Fixture company, went to Chicago. this evening on business. Mrs. I. Bloom of Gary, visited friends in Chicago yesterday. Mr. George Sogovltz, the Gary con tractor, will leave Saturday evening for Cleveland, where he will visit at ,hls former home and also to transact business. Miss Annie Havi of Gary and Mr. Daniel Raki of Indiana Harbor will be married in Gary the latter part of this week. They expect to make their home in Gary. The large plank conduit under Eleventh avenue and near Washington street is threatening to break any mln ute through the pressure of the water which has been running through for the last forty eight-hours. The plank Ing has rotted and at the present time the road bed above threatens to cave in. Should this occur the main east and west street of the town. Eleventh avenue wh.'ch runs clear through to Toleston, would be blockaded. In an ef fort to keep this road open a police man has been stationed at this point to carefully watch the conduit and in case of a caving-in teamsters will be brought to the place to fill the place up at once, even if it does block up the outlet of the sloughs temporarily. He is much better, and he was at his office today, looking after the affairs of the prison. If the warden continues to improve under his present treatment, the matter, of his resignation may be dropped by the time of the meeting of the board of trustees in May. The war den tendered his resignation at the March meeting of the board, owing to his failing health, but the board refused to accept it. Every time the warden's health is mentioned the story goes out that he broke down because of the strain he underwent in hang ing thirteen men. The assignment of this cause for his illness is ridiculed by the warden and his friends. MORGAN BUYS ERIE RAILROAD SCRIP YESTERDAY. Holders of Erie Xotes May Take Cash or Three Year Notes. New York, April 8. J. P. Morgan & Company announced today that - the holders of the Erie railroad notes, amounting to $5,500,000, which ma tured today, would either be paid par in cash for their notes or given the option of taking a new three year 6 per cent note and 5 per cent of the new notes in cash. This announcement followed the ac ceptable, by the Erie directors, o.f an offer by Edward H. Harriman to furnish the funds to meet the obligations of the Erie company by the purchase of a new large issue of notes. In his letter offering to purchase tha new notes, Mr. Harriman required that this offer to the stockholders be made a condition of the transaction. He also stipulated that the payments and deliveries to the stockholders be made out of the cash to be provided or out of the new notes receivable by him. FARMER'S WIFE DIES OF MEASLES YESTERDAY. Mrs. Annie Marie Zanders Passes Away In E aerie Creek; Township. Crown Point, Ind., April 9.( Spe cial.) Mrs. Annie Marie Zanders, wife of Henry Zanders, who lives on a farm in Eagle Creek township, one-half mile southwest of Kinney's store, died at her home on Tuesday of bronchial pneumonia and measles. Mrs. Zanders was 43 years and 11 months old. She will be burled in the Crown Point cemetery and the funeral held at -the Lutheran church here.
