KILLED HER WOLVES. AT TATTF. TPflwr -datstt a

" "Viij. .JXJX, w

Mrs. Wolf of the "wolverie" at th

Lake ront park, took her five babies out ostensibly for a walk yesterday. That her real motives were not to give her small family a good time, "but to murder them, was evidenced by her. subsequent conduct, when after reaching the watsring trough where sh. is wont to slake her thirst, she deliberately killed all of the little ar.imals but one. The babies have their eyes open now and have furnished much amusement to Joe Kaspar and his helpers at the waterworks, with their playful ways. They aro a roly-poly lot and until yesterday had the best time imaginable tumbling about their cage, apparently giving; no end of pleasure to a proud mother. However, the test of the pride of motherhood in a .wolf Is when her puppies drink water. As soon as they are abl-3 to walk she conducts them to the place where she is in the habit of drinking. Yesterday for the first time the Lake Front park baby wolves partook of water. The mother had considerable difficulty in coaxing the batiea along, but she finally rounded them all up in front of the drinking trough, which is built in the cenv-nt

not tar irom where they sleep. She sucked little water up through her teeth, and then stood aside coaxing her cubs to do likewise. One by one they imitated her as nearly as possible. The mother wolf watched them like a hawk. A . little gray puppie was the first to try. Out came his little tongue and he, proceeded to lap the water like a dog. Another and then another drank until every one of the cubs had partaken. Then the mother took the baby wolves, one after another, selecting those which had lapped the water instead of sucking it, as she had done, up by the neck and shook them as a dog shakes a rat, until life was, extinct. When she had finished her task there was but one cub left. It was a little block male wolf, the only one which hai learned Its lesson aright It had sucked, instead of 'lapping the water and it the mother allowed to live as a reward of merit. As soon as the mother had killed all she intended to dispatch, Mr. Kaspar removed the bodies to prevent the mother from devouring them. Last year out of a. litter of five, a similar performance -was gone'ihrcuph on the first. occasion -,af .the mother taking her little brood to water. On this occasion she .killed only three, 'however.

and these she ate,
