ii HAMMOND, GARY REAL ESTATE BOARD AS HOSTS Prominent Dealers in Chi- . cago Invited Will Visit Steel City. 10 BE SHOWN A FEW THINGS BevenVFive Expected if Weather Is Good Reasons for Function . Three Fold. Tomorrow will ba the great day for the Gary real estate board when they entertain for the whole morning and evening seventy-five of the biggest dealers in : Chicago, members of the Chicago -real estate board. The thorough preparation for the great event, which is characteristic of Gary's undertakings,' has been attended to in detail and there remains nothing to be ! uuuo iu impress tne Chlcagoans with the greatness of the magic city, its brilliant future and to bring both organizations" into a closer arid more friendly relationship. - E. C Vallette is chairman of the committee which has the matter in charge. - I The train bearing the party will arrive in Gary about noon in a special car attached to a regular train and carriages will be at the depot to meet them. From the train they will be taken to the' Gary hotel, where they will be served with an appetizing menu. It was planned originally to serve only a buffet luncheon but the committee decided that everything must be "done up brown," and a regular full course dinner was decided upon. Will Visit Steel Plant. After this Is partaken of the party will be escorted to the steel plant whera the mysteries of the gigantic Institution in process of erection will be viewed and explained. The entire plant will be . covered in detail. The rest of the program, if there is any time left, will be taken up with sightseeing in the city proper and the development of, the building operations. There : seems to be three great motives in bringing, the Chicago real estate board to Gary. The fight waged in the Calumet 'region " for, the" proposed harbor and.-drainage system. Is a well known fact. The opposition 1

It is not known what their motives are, whether it was because they fear the progress in this region which would result, or that they are unable to understand the unlimited benefits that would be derived by the success of the plan. In either event they hope to overcome or neutralize the evident feeling against them by bringing the two bodies into closer relationship, and establishing a bond of friendship and by letting them judge for themselves by tangible evidence the great benefit that could be derived all around. Pay a Debt of Gratitude. Another reason for inviting the party to Gary Is to try to some extent to repay the business men for the kindness which they receive from them in Chicago in business transactions "and for the liberties which they are allowed in their offices, where they have access to maps and data. The third reason Is that they wish to show the Chicago men the actual value of local real estate, existing conditions and give them to more clearly unldestand and appreciate the value of investments here and the great future in store for Gary. The; committee in charge of the reception to the visitors are: C. E. Vallette, chairman; Captain H. S. Norton, Homer J. Carr, George T. Baker, F. II. Hill and J. J. Kelley. j BAEBECUE COMMITTEES ARE HAED AT WOEK. All of the committees which are to have charge of the arrangments for the big democratic barbecue have been selected and they will meet , next Thursday - to. complete their arrangments at' Gary. One of the things that was recently decided upon was the matter of inviting William Jennings Bryan to attend. A telegraphic message was sent to him and it is hoped that if he is in this vicinity he may be induced to attend. It is expected to make the barbecue one of the greatest political events that Gary has ever known and the committees are all working hard on the preliminaries. CAEL AMES STAETS IN WITH HIS NEW WOEK. It is now Deputy Clerk Carl W. Ames of the Lake superior court. Mr. Ames has been appointed as his official deputy by E. L. Shortridge, clsrk of the Lake circuit and superior courts, and began his duties this week. At a meeting held this aft prnnnn In the Gary hotel, the Union Teamsters ci oary and the teamster's association will confer for the purpose of establishing a settlement of the difTrnf. of the two parties which are now at Is sue. If the team owners do not pferi to the terms of the contract now snh. bitted to them by the union, there is a possibility that the 600 Union team sters may go on a strike -and consequently tie up building operations and traffic of every description. Monday the principles In the controversy met in the Gary hotel where the union men submitted their scale of wages which they demand and other privileges they desire. The price they ask for is ?2.50 per day, with a nine hour day. At the present time the union has no scale in effect and the various team owners are paying varying wages to their employes. The men are also working ten hours a day and are compelled to oil harness, which they object to. Higher Wages Main Object. Of course the main object of contention is the scale of wages. The teamsters believe that" the work In Gary is difficule enough so that they can demand the scale they ask for and that it would not be unseasonable for them conditions. The owners declare that times aro hard and they are compelled to pay for the maintainence of many horses which are idle, feed Is high and that under the contracts which they have already made to do work they could not afford to change their scale. They are attempting to secure a vpar's delay in fixing the schedule so that they may have time to adjust their work and be prepared to meet the advance in the wages of their employes. At the last meating they did not seem willing to grant this. Ever since the union was organized, '

they planned to present to the team owners a contract agreement according to custom. This step was finally taken ana tne matter has now come to an is sue. Union Has 600 Members. The union now numbers 600 mom bers, although it has been organized Dut a short time and more are constantly joining. The team owners have at the present time twenty-two members and expect to increase that number to forty in a short time as there are that, many in the city. The officers which have been but -recently elected are:; President, Thomas J. ormley; Secretary, C. Smith; Treasurer, C. Davis. President Gormley stated yesterday afternoon that he . did .not, anticipate trouble between the union men and the team owners as a result-of their differences. He thought that the whole matter would be satisfactorily settled at the meeting this afternoon. "Neither of us can afford a strike at the present time," he stated, 'and the attitude of both parties is perfectly friendlv." The spokesman for the union tomorrow in the meeting will be the well known Chicago union man, George Golding. He is also optimistic as to the outcome of the conference. The Gary union also Includes the drivers of Toleston, Miller and Clark. "GLAD TO GET BACK TO GOD'S C0UNTEY." The Gary de'egatlon to the reDubllean state convention at Indianapolis re turned this morning on the 8:20 Michigan Central.
