Work Is slowly progressing on the putting in of the concrete piers of the. bridge for the Iake Shore and Baltimore & Ohio, over the Grand Calumet, a short distance west of Broadway. With the completion of this bridge the roads can begin the running of their respective trains through Gary on elevated tracks. There Is, of course, yet remaining the structural work for the crossing over Broadway and Virginia streets, but it is thought that this wiil he in place as suon as the Calumet river bridge can put in, at the pr sent rate of working.

Two funerals at the same Hmreh, within two hours of each other is a very unusual thing for this neighborhood. The funeral of Robert Jamieson occurred yesterday at Ross at 10 o'clock arul that of Fred Robinson at 12 o'clock.. The Standard Oil company had a bad leak in their pipes in the south part of town yesterday. It required most of the afternoon to repair It and burn the waste oil. E. F. Schofleld is the happy grandfather of a little lady, who came to the homo of his daughter, Mrs. Joe Welming, of Chicago on Dec. 23.

Tho attachment suit of L. Mekatinsky vs. Forzt and Murzyn before Justice of the Peace A. C. 1 tuber, was settled out of court the earlier part of tho week. Miss Flora E. Mashino, ex-deputy treasurer of Hammond, has entered upon her new duties as deputy treasurer of Gary, taking up the work tins morning at the office of Judge Bryan in the south part of town. The work will probably be carried on there for several weeks, until arrangements can be made to have all of the municipal offices In one location. This proposed
arrangement will accommodate the city engineer, clerk, treasurer, building commissioner and the board of trustees' meeting place. The Co-operative Construction company is busily engaged in tearing off the third story wall of the old factory building at Adams street and Twenty-second avenue. It was deemed $afcr and better to do away with the superfluous space made by the third story rather than permit it to stand and be a constant menace to those working in or about the plant. A son was born Wednesday to Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Cain. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Eldredge have gone to Monon to visit relatives. Floyd and Mae Raven, who have been visiting ln Delphi, have returned home. Gus Grant went to IndianapoIi3 yesterday on business. Rev. II. L. Klndlg has returned from Indianapolis.
THAW OUT PET SNAKE. Marlon, Ind., Dec. 27. Gas well drillers on the Jesse Johnson farm, near Upland, this county, have a pet blue racer. II. R. Miles discovered a snake s head protruding from the earth that had been thawed out near the well. He and James Moore dug It up. thawed it out thoroughly and. as it appeared grateful for this attention and disposed to be friendly, adopted It as the mascot of the drilling outfit.
