FOUL MURDER IS DONE

Body of the Victim, a Woman, Found Nude in a Shallow Pond. SEEN WITH A MAN AT NIGHT Her Screams Heard by Two Girls Who ; Were Out Late. Part of Hfr Clothing Picked Up at th( Sepni- of the Crime Her , Companion a ThickSet Man. L Newark, N. J., Dec. 27. A murder combining the elements of mystery and deliberate cruelty that took it out of the ordinary was committed on tht Ilaekensaek meadows in the town of Ilai'risjii, and tlie nude IickIt of th'. victim, a comely woman of perhaps thirty years, was- found nearly subniorscd in tl.o icy waters of a little pond. Only the feet projected when chance passersby broke the. ice in which the exposed portions were Incrusted and dragged the body ashore. The dead woman was finely featured; her hair timl nails gave evidence of a recent and scrupulous toil4, and such of her clothing ns was subsequently found suggested in texture and style an owner of refinement, rather than one whose habits might lead her to frequent the vicinity of the crime. Police Have One Goocl Clue. The body has not yet been identified, and it is pretty well established that it was not that of a resident of this city or IJarrison. Its description d H's not correspond with that of any woman reported to th? police as missing. Two men who occupied a yacht moored near where the body was found are detained by the police, but the most important clue obtained was supplied by Peter Coogan. a watchman employed by the Marine Engine com pany. Story That Coogan Tells. Co.igan, whose duties keep him in the no:ghlorhood of the murder, told the police: "While outdoors at 2 a. m. I saw this woman In comnanv with a man cross the -meadows, going in the direction of the pond. They passed so near me that I am ab!e to recognize the woman's features. Some time later perhaps an hour the man returned and again passed me, this time going in the direction from which the two had come when I first saw them. This time the man wis alone. In his arms he carried a bundle which he had not had before. In build he was short and thickset." Coogan could not give, a better description of the man. TWO GIItLS HEAR SCREAMS They Were from a Woman Parts of Her Clothing Found. Two jrirls returning to thoir home in Harrison lonpr after midnight heard a woman's cries floating- over the marsh land. They seemed to come from the direction of the pond, and to the startled girls sounded like "Spare me!' and "Help!" Nearer home the girls i werf approached by a well-dressed stranger, -who accosted and followed them until a policeman was met with, when lie turned and fled. The girls had a good view of the man under an electric light, and while he was well and neatly dressed his hands showed either that he Avas accustomed to manual labor or had recently lieen engaged in work that soiled his fingvrs. A mark on the nock of the corpse Indicated that strangulation was tho manner of death. Scratches on the leg and trunk and pieces of cinder forced into the flesh showed that the body had been dragged alonj; a cinder path which skirts the pond. Along tlie path the police picked up a "white silk waist slashed up the back, a skirt and a pair of silk garters. Following the path " " w , the police came upon the yacht Idle Hour, which was tied up at a point cn tlie Passaic about three hundred feet from w lie re the body was found. On the yacht the police say that they found a sealskin muff and a fur neckr,:,1(), 1 j ne occnpanis or me yacnt were aibort Thompson, of Elizabeth, a Iwatniftn. and Frederick Kirkman. The police found on the boat dishes enouch for three diners. There were three plates, three saucers, and so on. The men. however, said that they had no visitor on the Idle Hour. Both were arrested as suspicious characters. The police said that thev had practically nothing asainst the pris-.mers. but would detain them until further inquiry cordd be made. Jlistoot His Chihl for a Burglar. San Jose. Cal.. Dec. 27. Bertram i Somers shot and killed his five-year-old boy, havins mistaken hixn for a burclar. The child, it is believed, was walking in his sleep. The parents wcro , i i : .1. , seeing the outline of a figure near the window tfcov concluded it was that of a burclar. Somers reached for his pistol and fired, killing the child instantly. Seventeen Hurt In a Collision. Denver, Dec. 27. Seventeen persons were injured, none of them fatally, in a collision between two trolley ears on the Denver Tramway company's line."
