ftlERBY GHBISTHASI Trio of Unemployed Made Happy by Turkey Feast at Oaks Hotel. k L. BROWN INVITES MM Lliiie Host Asks Guests to Bring in; Chance Destitutes To Be Fed. (Iertnl to lake County Time.) Windsor Park, Pec. 26. Albert P. Rr own. proprietor of the Oaks hotel. Windsor Park, might have a hard time I l enumerating the gifts he distributed r mo tig his friends and acquaintances this Cluistmas, but it would be an easy matter Pr him to tell which bestowal rendered him and the recipients the greatest amount of satisfaction. Mr. Pr-iwn, surrounded by the comforts of bis own snug hostelry, did not forget that there were many who would go without even a square meal on Christmas day if they were not looked after. So, accordingly he requestcd a number of his guests if they saw anybody who looked reasonably decent and who was evidently broke and wanting for a Christmas dinner, to send him around and lie would set up the turkey and accessories. Oulj- One .llakm Good. While a number of the guests were given this tip, there was only one who had both the opportunity and the courage to put the invitation to good service. John Griffin, timekeeper for the Circuit Construction company was walking down Railroad avenue not far from the hotel, when he encountered a trio of hopeless looking individuals, whose faces and demeanor plainly told that they were hungry. They were decent looking men, evidently of the mechanic class, and Griffin took a chance on a rebuff by inquiring as to tl eir destination and financial condition. The men, it appeared, were hound for South Chicago in search of work. Th.ey had tramped Chicago over with out results and were all "dead broke" and hungry. Having satisfied himself that his men were not impostors, Griffin informed them of the offer of the hotelkeeper and they willingly aoecmpanied the good Samaritan back to the hotel where they sat down to a Christmas dinner that would satisfy the palate of the most exacting epicure. There, were oyster cocktails, great bow-Is of steaming hot soup, turkey and dressing, cranberry sauce, mince and pumpkin pie, celery and all the other accessories that go to make up a good old-fashioned Christmas feast. Make Neat Appearance. The men were given an opportunity to wash up before entering the dining room and when this had been accomplished and with their hair neatly brushed, they presented a good appearance. The men gave their names as John Barber, b dlermaker, aged 40 years; George N'lehaus. .'11 years old, and Louis Pelaney, 21) years of age, both machinists. The two latter said they hailed from Iowa. All are married and have families out west. The trio were most grateful and assured Mr. Prown on leaving that he had made happy a day that otherwise would have been fraught with nothing but the deepest gloom for them. All had been out of employment for from two to three months and through force f circumstances had become tramps for the time being.
