George Vupeck, who tried to imitate the ways of a bad man, will. In all probability, spend his Christmas Day in the Gary lock-up and ponder over the principles of good behavior. Entering the place of Tony Balla last night, he demandad that he be given as much to drink as he desired without paying for it. Balla realized that Vupeck was then saturated, and refused the request. As a result of premature celebrations of the Christmas holidays there was a big haul of drunks in the police station this morning. Many of them will have to spend Christmas in the county Jail. The following are the names of the victims: Mila Daranel. Thurlow Hines, Samuel Cheever, James French, A. M. Reed, Fred Lawel, Robert Weiley. Excavators Dig Up Mastodon. Some men who were excavating In the rear of the police station in Gary, dug the bones of an old horse. They were much Interested in their find and showed them to every one who passed. The word finally was passed around that they were the remains of a mastodon, but the report was soon found to be nothing but a joke. GRIFFITH NEWS C. M. Harney, our rural mall carrier, is quite sick. EAST CHICAGO NEWS Quite a number of mill men have secured employment at the Coffee works. Mesdames A. Ottenheimcr and Goodfriend were Chicago visitors yesterday. All business will be suspended tomorrow. Mrs. W. C. Hutton left yesterday for Montieello, where she will spend the holidays with relatives. Mr. Hutton left today for the same place. Mr. Ed Reil left .today for Jefferson, Wis., to spend the holidays. Chief Higgins Is expected home this evening. The younger set will spend Christmas evening dancing at Weiland's hall. A Chicago tailor has rented Goldberg's building on Olcott avenue and will take possession about the first of the year. David Johns arrived here yesterday from Pittsburg to spend the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Johns of Magoun avenue. It is rumored that the Interurban will commence construction between East Chicago and Hammond in the near future. James McMills, jr. of Fort "Wayne, is spending the holidays with his mother, Mrs. J. McMills. Glen Ebright of Hammond, visited friends In East Chicago last night. One of the notable events on Sunday afternoon was the baptizing of Mr. and Mrs. John Dalton's daughter, Mary, by the Rev. Father G. Lauer at St. Mary church. Miss Marie Ryder of East Chicago acted as godmother while Jus. J. Dalton of Chicago acted as godfather. MICHIGAN CITY The December term of the superior : court opened yesterday and will con- , tinuo for live weeks. On the docket are 102 civil and eleven state cases. There are several important damage suits to come up and nineteen divorce suits. An important decision just made by the Indiana appellate court confirms Judge Richter in lining the Grand Trunk Railway company $100 for failing to place a watchman at a crossing in the country near Stiliwell. J. B. Collins, the prosecuting attorney, brought the case against the road under a statute passed in 1S91, and the appeal was a test case. In accordance with this statute the county commissioners had passed an ordinance reQuiring the Grand Trunk to maintain a watchman at the crossing in question. Theron F. Miller of this city and F. E. Osborn and W. A. McVey of La Porte, attorneys for Jetter G. Strange, who sued the Pert Marquette road for the loss of a leg in 1904, were victorious in the appellate court, which confirmed the circuit court award of $10,000 damages. The handsome new interurban station at the corner of Franklin and Second streets was in use yesterday for the first time. The building cost $9,000 and is complete and artistic in every respect. Defective steam pipes in the oven of Puir & Sons bakery caused an explosion which blew out several feet of brick wail, but Injured no one. Work on the steel roof of the new Hanna power house was stopped by the union steel workers quitting their job because nonunion men were at work. Joseph La Belle, who has charge of the construction, explained that at the time the contract was taken It was impossible to secure enough union Ironworkers. Ho expects to resume work tomorrow with a full force of union men. Yesterday was Ford Colborn day at the public library, thirty new books being added to the children's collection purchased with interest of the Ford Colborn memorial fund. Mrs. Frank B. Mathews, whose husband committed suicide last Monday, has returned from Fremont, O., where the interment took place, and will ship her household goods to her old home. Mrs. J. F. Mathews and children, Ermina and Harry, arrived from Wa-' terloo, Iowa, today to spend a few weeks with their grandmother, Mrs. Phoebe Eddy. Frank W. Tucker of Indianapolis, a deputy state food inspector, who has made frequent business trips to this city recently, yesterday filed an affidavit in the city court against Ray 11. Ebert, a well known Franklin street butcher, charging him with selling lard adulterated with tallow. The case is on trial today. The Krouthal Shirt factory Is moving from its old quarters at 216 East Michigan street to its large new building at the corner of Pine and Twelfth streets. The democratic press of the Tenth Congressional district at a recent meeting unanimously endorsed Hon. James K. Risk of Lafayette for state chairman. Mr. and Mrs. John II. Barker have Issued invitations for their customary New Year's eve reception. The hours are from S to 12 and there will be dancing in the ball room. Mrs. C. N. Keeler will entertain at bridge on Friday and at euchre on Saturday afternoon of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Oflley Walter Leeds announce the engagement of their sister. Miss Carrie A. Leeds, to Moe Andrew Cushman of Chicago. The wedding will be in January but the exact date has not been set. Only the Immediate relatives will be asked. It Is one of the most important weddings that has occurred in the city for sev eral years. Miss Leeds having inherited the bulk of her mother's fortune last February, only a month after becoming of age and taking possession of her own estate. Mr. Cushman is manager of the National Creamery Supply company of Chicago, of which he has the controlling interest. They will live at Alexandria during the winter. Mrs. Mary Roberts was buried yesterday in the family lot at Greenwood cemetery. She was a prominent resident here for many years, and died Saturday at the home of her son In Detroit at the age of S2 years. ROBERTSDALE NEWS Robert Atchison of Roberts avenue, made a business trip to Chicago yesterday. Mrs. Anne Kline of Hammond visited friends here last evening. Mrs. T. W. Kohr of Indiana boulevard was a Chicago business visitor Monday. Kx--Aderman Erlck Lund of Ham mond, formerly of Robertsdale. was here yesterday looking after the interest of his real estate. Ray Hammond of the I M. Hammond Coal company of Chicago, was a Robertsdale business visitor yesterday. Mrs. George Sladeck and grand-son, George Halt of Talos Park, 111., are spending a few days here visiting the latter's father, Henry Hatt of Indiana boulevard. They have all been notified and probably will hear from him through an attorney unless accounts are paid up. Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Hart spent this week with their parents. Dr. R. A. Krost of Chicago is home to spend the holidays. Victor Harding of Chicago transacted business in Crown Point yesterday. The Masons have quit work on the court house on account of the tad weather. The Presbyterian Sunday school gave a delightful entertainment last evening and incidentally Santa Claus called upon thern. The death of Harvey Sauerman occurred Friday evening at 11 o'clock, after an illness of over a year. Consumption and trouble with his lungs generally, were the causes of his death. He went west about a year ago in hopes of improving his health. While there he was married and returned home, but the disease had the better of him. Deceased was about 26 years old. The funeral was held at the house at 1:20 this afternoon. Otto Fifield of Wheeler, Ind.. was a Crown Point visitor over Sunday. He Is home for his vacation from Purdue University. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is advertised for Christmas evening at Central Music hall. Miss Pauline Sauerman is sick with tonsilitis. The C. P. Girls team defeated the Lowell girls at Lowell by a score of 9 to 6. Phoebe Westby was the star for Crown Point, while Myrtle Stilson played tho best game for Lowell. Saturday evening the boys' high team defeated LeRoy 37 to 6, and the Mens' club from Crown Point, defeated Lowell by the score of 52 to 7. Miss Curtis, the present principal of the high school, has been selected to act as superintendent for the remaind er of the year, and next year Mr. Curtis will return and be superintendent. As vet no one has been engaged to take Miss Curtis's place. The Presbyterian church will hold their Christmas services for the chil dren tonight. Wilbur D. Hart Is home from Cor nell University on his Christmas vacation. Zollie Salisbury visited with his brother, Dr. Allen Salisbury, over Sun day. Miss Geneva Kern is home from Northwestern University. There was a large attendance at the Hessville school entertainment in Gorman's hall Saturday evening. Miss Veda Hemstoek of Hammond gave a few pleasing readings. which were much appreciated. Miss Lillian Borrr.an of Hammond rendered' a plano solo. The exercise, "The Everlasting Light." the dialogue, "Xmas in Naughty Land." and tho duet, "Star of the East," by Grace Gorman and Emma Dedelow, deserve special mention. Misses Leoda McAleer and Emily Ebert, Messrs. Dellger and Thome were among the Hammondites who attended the entertainment. A sleighing party was enjoyed afterwards. Miss Newell is spending her vacation in southern Illinois. Mesdames Tinola, Holly and Burkhardt were Hammond shoppers yester day. Miss Clara Hess has returned to Chicago after a short visit here. L LE ROY NEWS A number of teachers from here attended the banquet at Crown Point, given in honor of Superintendent Curtis. Mrs. Ernest Knolen was shopping in Crown Point Saturday. Mrs. J.imes Aiken and son, John, went to Valparaiso Saturday to spend a few days with friends. Elmer Ling of Hebron, former barber here, visited in Le Roy Saturday. A sled load of Le Roy ladies went to Hebron on Saturday to do shopping. MUNSTER NEWS Miss Louise Kuhlman has returned from Crown point where she has been spending the week with her grand father, C. Dledrich. Mr. Dledrich has been seriously ill, but is on the way to recovery. Mr. Sehrooder of Dyer, visited Joseph Kuhlman yesterday. Fred Prohl of Saxony was here on business yesterday. Dick Klootwyk was a Hammond visitor yesterday. Miss Laura Xewcomb of Saxony Is spending the holidays at Oak Park, 111. JOHNS NEWS Frank Hatch of Cedar Lake, was here on business yesterday. Henry Grieving of Dyer was a St. John visitor yesterday. George Gerlach and Thomas Conners transacted business in Crown Point, Monday. Ed Klein, Peter and Jacob Keilman were Hammond visitors yesterday. It Is reported that Mrs. Anton Reitman is sick with pneumonia. Jos. Gerlach, Alois Portz and Ed. Scherer wil make a trip to Texas and other southern points in the near future. Columbia Court No. 3, C. C. L., and the St. John's court. No. 99, C. O. F., received invitations from St. Aloysins Court, No. 4, located at Griffith to be present at the solemn dedication of the new banner recently bought by St- Aloyins Court No. 4, at St. Michael's church, Schererville, on Sunday, Dec. 29. The dedication will take place at 2:15 p. m. A German sermon will be delivered by the Rev. Father Berg of Schererville, and an English sermon by the Rev. Father .Turashek of Chesterton. After the service in the church the entire Catholic community is invited to accompany St. Aloysins Court to their ball in Griffith, where several speeches will be made for the god of the order, after which refreshments wil be served. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schavey returned from Chicago yesterday, where they had been visiting mends ror several days. Albert Johnson was In Chicago Monday. George Mellon left yesterday for Berne. Ind., where he will spend the holidays with friends. Hobart was cut off from the outside world yesterday for several hours on account of both the telephone and telegraph wire being out of service. A real live "Santa" made his appearance in Charles Stommel's store yesterday, giving a present to all little children that come to see him. It was very interesting to watch some little ones walk up to him with a timid step and shake hands with him. Others stood outside the door, stoutly refusing to enter when they saw him. The Christmas exercises at our public schools were largely attended in spite of bad weather. A nice program was rendered by the pupils, after which Christmas goodies were distributed to the children.
