HEARD ON THE BOURSE. New York, Nov. 21. General market in London firmer without much feature. Bank of England rate remains unchanged. Certain well informed people are buying Smelter for a big advance. We think that after some more backing and filling the general market will Improve to the extent of ten to twenty points from the bottom, but a genuine bull campaign need not be looked for at present. Rldgely. London sold Erie down and there is a rumor that the public service commission will not sanction the scrip issue. It seems, however, unimportant. There is a big borrowing demand
for stocks, particularly St. Paul, Pennsylvania, Steel and Union. Sxeciallsts bought 7,000 Union and Steel, said to be a short covering. I think the market oversold. Miller. Developments this morning are not very encouraging for the bull, as i"o immediate , movement largely because of the accumulating evidence of the conflict between the financial ana the political po-wers. The American this morning has a sensational article charging the banks with conspiracy again; this cannot but be unsettling as
to contulence, though It seems hard to disturb confidence more than it has been. The Herald publishes editorials from all over the country condemning in a great many cases the new inilation of currency. The attack on Roosevelt by Justice Brewer of the supreme court coming from a judicial and political source, as it may be considered, ought to have weight for favorable compromise, provided there is such a thing as compromise in Washington. The Pennsylvania cancellation of orders for locomotives indicates what the industrials may expect for a time, and this feature of the trade reaction is one that keeps shrewd purchasers otherwise willing to buy high grade rails on reactions from investing in the industrial list. ITnancal Bureau. B. & O. October net earning decrease 5142.37S, and for four months decrease $278,732. President Early of the St. Paul says for the first time in a long period calls for cars are fully supplied. Total amount of gold taken for import on present movement now amounts to about $70,500,000. Car Foundry may pass common dividend early in December on account of lack of new business. Strong demand for stocks in the loan crowd. Washington has given out no figures on subscription to the new treasury
I issues, but fair amounts are reported, j Western roads report big slackening I of business on lateness of crop movement and money stringency. Twenty-
four roads tor seconu week of Novem-
j ber show average gross decrease of j 1.97 per cent.
Local professionals still very bearish and selling wheat. White. X'o rally of importance can be expected until present liquidating mar
ket has run its course or is suspended. It should be ktpt in mind, however, that the short interest is growing and that the time when financial relief measures will become effective, is drawing nearer. -Pick. Conditions are still unsettled and there is a disposition to await indications of pronounced improvement in. money conditions. Brown. The situation and outlook of the general stock market from our view remains unchanged from our previous advices. Mclntyre. We cannot change our opinion that tne good rails are cheap. While after every panic there is r.o royal road to success for the bull, we continue to fed that the long position offers the real opportunities. Miller. No better chances for investors was ever present. Arrangements have been made by New York banks to rush bank note circulation to the interior by millions. .This will heip all the country institutions and will be speedily favorably reflected in all commercial and industrial circles. Good buying of coppers and steels will be in evidence. The Rock . Island- interests look for quick recoveries in their issues. Keep long Union, and buy L &
for a turn'. " - :- .
