Javil Spencer "spent Wednesday evening with his daughter and husband Mr. and Mrs. James Davidson, of Englewood. Mr. Ralston of Indiana Ilartor transacted business here yesterday. Miss Elizabeth Putnam is ill at her home in One Hundred anil Nineteenth street. The Woman's Foreign Missionary society held an all day session at the Methodist church yestf-rday. An elegant dinner wis perveu. Mrs. Fellz McKlroy of Wilcox avenue, was operated on at the Presbyterian hospital last night. Dr. Dewey of Whiting was in attendance. Jack Platz of Fisohrupp avenue died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kobert Atchison yesterday morning from a complication of diseases. Teresa McKlroy of Fred street and New York avenue, has the typhoid fever. The two weeks leave of absence which was given to Patrick Lawk r, expires tomorrow and he will resume Ills duties as chief of police, which lias been taken by Sergeant Clay Collins. Miss Jennie Szymanskl of Indiana Harbor, was a visitor here yesterday. Vincent Qulnn of 25 One Hundred and Nineteenth street, is slightly Improved, and his parents now have hopes of his recovery. Miss Lena Dustine has resigned her position as stenographer in Chicago. The children of the first, second and third grades, gave a delightful entertainment in the high school auditorium yesterday, under the direction of Miss Edith Oliff. The amusements consisted of drills and all were much pleased with the work of the children. Mrs. G. S. Hilllard entertained a party of ladles at the Auditorium yesterday afternoon. The party consisted of Mesdames W. K. Putnam. F. N. Gavit. Iloyt Wright. F. N. Pooling. G. J. Eader. A. N. Beaubein. G. II. Hosklns and Miss Paeling. LE ROY NEWS On account of the money flurry, the dealers here have not been buying any hogs or cattel lately, but there will be a car load shipped some time this week. Hogs are ?l lower than the regular price. Master Clifford Fail of Chicago, is staying with his relative, George Dunklebarger, of S. E. Grove. He will stay here until Thanksgiving before returning home. Mrs. Dunklebarger of S. E. Grove, was shopping in LeRoy Wednesday afternoon. Charlie Lightfoot and wife transacted business in Crown Point Wednesday. J. J. Baldwin received another car load of coal last week. Mark Hollowensworth and Oatha Alyia were in LeRoy Wednesday. Oatha intends to sell out his stock and move to Hammond. RENSSELAER NEWS Mrs. S. E. Thompson and little grandson, Thomas, went to Hammond yesterday for a short visit. O. K. Rainier and daughter, returned to Lafayette today after a short visit with his daughter, Mrs. Dr. Gwln. Mrs. M. E. Thompson, who for some time has been confined in the sanitarium at Battle Creek, Mich., arrived home today. Miss Maude Atkins of Monticello, is visiting Miss Ruth Harris of this place. Colonel Goeble is visiting with his daughter and brothers in Logansport. Frank Kresler, senior partner of the drygoods firm of Ponter & Kresler, has sold his share of the business to his partner, Boyd Ponter. Mrs. Kresler has bought Joe Jackson's bus line and will run it himself while Mr. Ponter will continue in the drygoods business for himself. The price paid for the bus line was $1,600. Mr. Jackson has been in the bus and baggage business for eight years and lias worked hard and faithfully at it, and has made it pay. He has been trying for some time, however to dispose of it and intends to move to Canada and buy some land. Mr. Kresler takes possession immediately, hoping by the change to benefit his health. Interest still continues to grow in the Baptist Revival meetings and a number of additions have been made to the church. r TOLLESTON NEWS Rev. Aug. Rump visited in Hammond yesterday. Mrs. 1'. Kahili of Gary visited with friends in town yesterday. Mrs. Emll Woldt and daughter. Alma were Hammond shoppers yesterday. Mesdames A. Koepke and P. Conrad shopped In Hammond yesterday. Mrs. F. Kurth and son Emil were Hammond visitors yesterday. The remains of Mrs. Graves of Hammond were brought here for burial. The funeral was held here yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Graves was an old resident of Tolleston. Mr. A. Benson and family are moving into their new home on 169th street. ROBERTS DALE NEWS Mrs. Messenberg of Pearl street left yesterday to spend the wek end visiting relatives in Sehercrville, Ind. County Assessors Black and Ascher of Hammond were business visitors at the Western Glucose plant in Roby Thur.sday. Fred Kasch of Roberts avenue, is on the sick list. Mrs. J. Brenner of Indiana boulevard was the guest of relatives in Kensington, 111., yesterday. John Kreuter's store in Indiana boulevard was entered last night by some unknown person and a number of pieces of granitwaio and cigars were taken. Mrs. William Eggers of Roberts avenue and Mrs. Frank Smith of Chicago saw "Forty-live Minutes From Broadway at McVickor's theatre last evening. Mrs. Frank Hoffman of Roberts avenue transuded business in Chicago Thursday. The Ladies' Aid of the Evangelical church, met at the home of Mrs. William Bought Thursday afternoon. After the regular business was disposed of, an elaborate luncheon was served by the hostess. Besides the members of the Aid, a number of guests were present and all report a most enjoyable time. Mrs. Henry Golding entertained a number of out of town relatives at her home in 222 Harrison avenue yesterday. John Plaul of Roberts avenue is confined to his home on account of sickness. Charles Platz died at the home of Ids daughter, Mrs. Robert Atchison, last evening, after a short illness. Mr. Platz had been working as a brick layer at Gary all summer. About a week ago he was taken sick and Tuesday came to the home of his daughter. His condition was not thought serious until Wednesday when a physician was sent for, but he grew rapidly worse until Thursday morning at 3 o'clock, when he expired. The funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 o'clock at the home of Mr. Atchison, 121 Roberts avenue. DYER NEWS John Heiser of Hammond, dealer in coffee, tea and spices was here with his delivery wagon yetserday. Fred Bremer of Endor made a business call here yesterday. S. Sax of the M. Sax & Co. liquor house of South Chicago, called on retailers of wet goods here Thursday. Cigarmaker Jos. Gels made a trip to Scherervllle yesterday in the interest of his business. Mr. Kutschbach of Lansing was a business visitor here yesterday. Messrs. John L. and Frank L. Keilman spent Thursday in Chicago, looking after busines matters. J. Rohrman of Schererville was a business visitor here yesterday. J. J. Klein is having his living rooms papered. F. F. Scheldt is doing the Jcb. The members of the St. Joseph's choir her, met yesterday evening in social gathering at the home of the Rev. Jos. Flach for a fine supper, after which all went to the school home where they spent the rest of the evening in singing and other amusements. Rev. Jos. Flach was at Chicago Thursday on business. EAST CHICAGO NEWS Mesdames M. and I. Specter and C. Pitzele attended a whist party at the home of Mrs. T. H. Seifer in Whiting, Wednesday. John Stirling has taken a position with the Whiting Supply house in Whiting. Miss Gertrude Jacobson saw "the Girl Question" at the LaSalle yesterday. The high school athletic association held a meeting after school yesterday. Rev. C. A. The Interstate is on again and prospects are good for a continuous run for some time. Deputy City Clerk Spencer was a Chicago visitor yesterday. Zeliska and Follok, the Chicago avenue jewelers, have secured quarters in Gary, and will transfer their business to that place in the near future. The A. L. N. INDIANA HARBOR Mrs. E. S. Gilbert and sister, Mrs. A. M. Amerman of East Chicago spent the day with friends in Chicago. Wednesday morning, about 2 o'clock four fellows walked into the Star restaurant and ordered meals and walked out witiiout offering either coin or checks in payment for the S5 cents they owed. The police were notified and located the fellows in Phillip & Cox's saloon, when they tried to escape but were halted by Officer Lewis' revolver, who marched them to the police station ahead of him. They were fined and friends settled for them. The announcement is made that Louis Sterling will be married about January 1 to Miss Nexier of South Chicago. Work on the Cline store building, next to Cline's hall, is progressing and the first floor is now laid. There will be offices In front and a fiat in the rear upstairs. Max Quinn has resigned his position at the Fort Wayne station and will assist Clint Garber at the I. II. Michigan avenue station. It is reported that Peter Meyn is to be at the head of the First National bank being organized here. The railroad company here purchased the Field school building and it is said the other property for sale on the street will be purchased within thirty days, possession to be given in May. L. B. Cummings has gone to Alexandria, Ind. The foreigners are not sending so much money to the old county these days for a very good reason they can't get it. Homer Hall is in Alexandria, Ind. MERRILLVILLE NEWS The Ladies' Aid society met yesterday at the residence of Mrs. Dr. Iddings with a large attendance. Resolutions of respect, in the case of Mrs. Maggie Pierce were spread upon the records. The ladies are at work on articles for sale at a bazaar to be held some time in December. M. F. Pierce, who has been in South Chicago since Tuesday, will return today, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. A O. Merrill who will stay with her father for a few days. Charles Merrill returned to his home in South Chicago after visiting a few days here. Myel Pierce and wife spent the day at Ainsworth with Cyrus Smith and family. Charles Goodrich, who resides east from Merriliville, was taken to the assylum at Logansport yesterday. His mind has been somewhat affected for 18 months, the result of a fall from his hay barn. I GRIFFITH NEWS I Miss Edna Dutton of Ross came here this morning on her way to Hammond, where she expects to visit a few days. John Johnson came over from our neighboring town today to take the Erie accommodation into the city. Lee Chalfant and his brother, Don, went to Hammond on the afternoon train. He had business with a refractory molar. L. A. Russell made a business trip to Hammond yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Henry Gerlach of Crown Point, who has been visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Math Grimmer, returned home this evening. Mrs. Grimmer accompanied her. L. D. Jacob Munster went to Chicago on business yesterday. Mrs. Emma Van der Graa of Harvey, has been visiting Mrs. John Zyp of Highlands, and she is now visiting at the home of her cousin. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Zyp of Highlands celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of their marriage "Wednesday, and a very enjoyable time was spent at their home, many relatives and friends being present. Joe Munster was a Wednesday visitor in Hammond. Miss Mary Kuhlman has gone to Hammond. Mr. and Mrs. Jackowitz and family moved to Chicago yesterday. Nicholas Kickert is moving his fam ily from Highlands to their new home in Munster. Walter Krooswyk and Garret Krooswyk were in East Chicago yesterday.
