ing. Pittsburg Our market closed today, but will probably re-open Monday with everything in good shape. Will probably have clearing house certificates here if New York does. Brown: "Bankers are quoted as expressing the belief that the situation is considerably improved." Mclntyre: "We regard the situation decidedly better and believe we are now passing the crucial point in the market and that conditions will show more Improvement during the next few days." Miller: "The situation is so complex that it is useless to guess at the time when things may he more cheerful. That liquidation was not in evidence and the fact that market rallied toward the close makes it appear some one has information which is favorable." Joseph: "This is a chance of j-ears for the investor. Big fortunes will be found In Copper, Anaconda, Steels and Smelters if you will buy and hold them. Pacifies will rally but the market will continue highly feverish and nervous. Better take on some steels. These are safo at present level."

Chicago, Oct. 20. Chicago's financial
institutions loom up at the close or a perilous week elsewhere In a condition of such united splendor as to challenge the confidence and the admiration of the business world. Exclusive of the many private concerns, the national and state banks, together with the trust companies, possess a balance this morning exceeding $700 000,000. This stupendous sum may be divided into three groups of deposits. Individuals using banks for commercial purposes have to their credit $305.705,976: the bank deposits amount to $236,653,204, while the wage earners have intrusted to the savings institutions $153,756,319. This does not take into account the aggregations of wealth held by the many private barks. It is
estimateo mat mese concerns hold fis
$25,000,000.
Marrrlons Ilauklng Grow t It. The marvelo-us growth of Chicago as a banking center in the last decade may be seen when the figures are studied. In 1S97 the Individual deposits were
in the neighborhood of $112,000,000, the lank deposits aggregated $65,000,000 and the savings banks held about $21,000,000. Thus there are now shown increases that almost stagger the imagination. It is calculated by bankers of Chicago today that her financial Institutions, in deposits and resources, approach the gigantic sum of $1 SOO.OOi,-
000. Chicago 8 iesouiv-co rac cee:itenths of those as held by the clearing house banks of New Y'ork. Ten years ago they were one-third only. I During all the flurry, that has about ' passed into history, there was not called a single special meeting to discuss the spasms and convulsions threatening the metropolis of the East. New loans have been made, -new business sought, just as if the good old times were still at hand. The local financial men have set back complacently in their business seats, calm ; and unafraid. ! Chicago is in a position to assist New York and is willing. But the corresi pondents of local bankers located in 1 New York belong to old line Instltu-

Many Advertisers are opposed to Advertising in the Summer Months. Some have reasonable grounds for this ; some simply cancel their advertising because others do it, or because they've heard It doesn't pay. People eat, drink and live in the summer and buy goods, jast the same as they do In the winter. Run your ad during the summer months in the Times and watch the results.
