Some Irregularity Is probable in the next few days, but further Improvement seems likely. Brown. ssurarces:. thai the New York, banking situation is sound did much toward improving sentiment and the
good bank statement of Saturday Indicates that th monetary situation Is likely to Improve. Logan & Bryan. A recovery In the market is quite logical. If there Is no further bad news It may go on for the extensive short interest may provide considerable buying power. Wre doubt, however, that recoveries will prove permanent. Dick. From what I hear the purchase of bonds the past ten days has been of the very best. This is encouraging for stocks. I expect to see the market rally 6 to S points. It depends on developments. It may be that certain trust companies will be investigated along similar lines to the mercantile bank, in that event the market will probably break again to near the previous bottom. It is next to impossible to predict immediate movements in the uncertain market, but if prices re-
I act moderately I should be Inclined to
buy stocks. The tendency is likely to be upward for several days. Ridge.
As the situation stands this morning we should say that developments must be awaited rather than anticipated in market operations. It is nearly sure that support will be given
and we consider the market In good technical condition as a result of low prices and liquidation, and the trend of values will depend entirely on sentiment growing out of over-night developments. Marshalls, Spader & Co. Information is more favorable. W. would be careful about following ui advances too heavily, however, an would not hesitate to take profits ward stock offering limits. The market is entitled to a short covering rail of 5 to 10 points from last week's lo . prices. Financial Bureau. Copper, Smelter, Missouri Pacific, Northern Pacific, Reading and Steel
! preferred f.nd technical strength and
display more prominent rallying tendencies than most stocks.
Vicksburg, Miss.. Oct. 22. President Roosevelt promised immediate aid for the deep water way In a speech
here yesterday. Departing from his custom of never revealing In advance anything he is to say In his message
to congress, he declared that In his
next message he would advocate ac
tion by the present congress on the water way question. The president also said he woud in favor of an at
tendant system of levees which would make lowlands of the Mississippi
valley safer from overflow.
Mr. Roosevelt, arriving at Delta, just
across the river, was met by a com
mlttee of 100 and brought to this city. An immense crowd , filled the streets and gathered to hear his speech. Gen
era! Stephen D. Lee, commander of the United Confederate Veterans, presented him to several hundred Union and Confederate veterans who had assembled
to greet the president.
When the party, after driving through the national cemetery, arrived
at Court House Square, the place of
speechlng-making, President Roose
velt was introduced by Congressman
John Sharp Williams, who paid tribute to the chief executive. Given Illg Demonstration.
When the president arose to reply
the big crowd accorded him a noisy demonstration that lasted several min
utes.
Immediately after closing his address President Roosevelt and party
were driven to their special train. At
5:80 the train pulled out for Memphis
where the cars will be transferred to
another road for the trip to Nashville
In his speech the president said:
"It is a good thing for an American
president to travel over the country
not for what he can teach, but for what he can learn. I have twice been
down in this alluvial delta of the Mis
slsslppl; in each case I came primarily
for bear"
Did you get any?' some one in the
crowd shouted.
The last time I got em; the first time all I can say Is that the bears and I broke even. I got as many of them
as they did of me."
