Messrs Roy Morrison and Frank MacPherson attended the services at the Baptist church In Hammond Sunday evening. Mrs. A. P. Melton of Gary, spent yesterday with Mrs. Ixn Stevenson of Ohio avenue. ' Misses Ella Klose and her roommate "Dixie" Hess, returned to their studies at Valparaiso University, after spending Saturday and Sunday with the former's mother, Mrs. A. Klose. Miss Winnie Fleres resumed her duties in the office- of the South Shore Gas and Electric company yesterday after a prolonged absence with typhoid fever. Her sister, Miss Delia Fleres. who has been filling her position, will go to dressmaking again. Miss Grace Klefer of Woodlawn spent Sunday with Miss Florence Schaub of Sheridan avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Smith (nee Orace Hellwig, have gone to their future home in Rossville, 111., ( after spending a few days with relatives in Hammond. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parks have returned from a visit in Canada and also in Cleveland, O. Mrs. Fred J. Smith of Oliver Btreet is entertaining her mother and sister from LaPorte, Ind. The class of '06 of the Whiting high Bchool held a business meeting in the club rooms last night. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Pfelfer have returned from St. John, where they spent about nine weeks. The Daughters of Liberty will give "True Blue" a Grand Army play, under
the direction of Col. Hunt, at Goebel's opera house, Oct. 29. Clay Collins Is back at his duties at the police station after spending a few days with his mother and children at Morocco, 111. The condition of John Hickory continues to improve, and there is now every hope for his recovery. Frank Allison is suffering with a large boll on the back of his neck. Meeting of Fortnightly. Mrs. Henry Beaubeln was hostess to the fortnightly club at her home In La Porte avenue at their third meeting of the year. This was a humorous evening, the leading humorists of -the day being under discussion. As the roll was called, each member present responded with a quotation from Sir John Talstoff, the time allowed for these being ono minute. Long and Robert Humphreys. These were tho funniest things ever seen or heard and they succeeded in causing much merriment. The next meeting will be held Nov. 4, at the home of Mrs. John Coar of

A heavily loaded wagon from South Chicago, broke down on the bridge over Wolf river at Roby, yesterday, delaying the cars and other traffic until help came to remove it. Street Commissioner Kuhlnian of Hammond, was here yesterday, inspecting the streets and alleys. Several teams are engaged In filling In the streets and cleaning the alleys. The people nre very much pleased with the progress of the work. Frank Hoffman of Roberts avenue was taken to Mercy Hospital in Chicago Monday, where he will undergo a very serious operation. The Chicago Telephone company has completed Its underground system from South Chicago to Sheffield avenue. This Is quite an improvement on the overhead f.vstem 'specially now that the winter months are coming on as the wires are quite frequently broken during the severe storm's. ,A car on the Hammond, Whiting ana Kast Chicago line Jumped the tracks at Sheffield avenue Sunday, doing considerable damage by running into the telegraph pole, breaking It off and tauslng the wires to come down with It, tyingup the telephone service as well as the cars for some time.

He reports that his neighbor, Mary Iddings, is well and happy. Both boys will prove up on their claims and be home about Jan. 1. Eva Iddings returned to her school In Aurora after spending Sunday with her rarents. Miss Basin of Griffith, visited over Sunday with her grandmother, Mrs. John Smith. The Conkey automobile was disabled in MerrillviUo yesterday. The occupants were on their way to Crown Point, but after mending punctures for two or three hours, concluded to return to Hammond. The Halfman baseball team of Merrillvillo played Crown Point yesterday. The Merrillvllle. members of the Crown Point football team, is somewhat averse to discussion the results of the game with Hammond on Saturday.

Owing to the scarcity of walnut logs the sawmill owned and operated by Lesh, Prouty & Abbot will be closed for several weeks. The shut-down will throw about thirty men out of employment. Contractor Johnson Is pushing the work on the new city hall. Already a large force of man has been engaged, and material is arriving every day. The Jail is being moved as it Is on the site of the new building. Abe Ottenhetmer transacted business in Hammond yesterday. Cement walks are being laid between One Hundred and Forty-fifth street and the C. T. T. tracks. This is a much needed Improvement. Hugh Hascall. who has been visiting his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hascall. left last night for his home In Toledo. Walter Weathermough leaves the latter part of the week for Alabama, where he will have charge of a rolling mill. Carney, who was called here to attend the funeral of Lewis Hayden, her father, returned to their home at Adair, la., Monday. Mrs. Mary Gragg, (nee Wood) of Chanute, Kaji., is here visiting relatives and friends. Mrs. Gragg was a former resident of near Lowell and moved away from here twenty-nine years ago, and this is her first visit back since leaving. She notes many changes from those of her girlhood days.

Attorney Gus Heart left yesterday morning for Indianapolis, where he is interested in the trial of a lawsuit. The board holds Its regular meeting this afternoon and rumor has it that the telephone franchise matter will come up for final action, one man even going so far as to claim that the board had committed itself. This is hardly likely, however, inasmuch as they reiterate their ignorance of the outcome, except that the best bidder gets the right to put in the utility. Contractor A. R. Hoover spent yesterday in Chicago on business, incidentally closing the contract for the erection of the Tittle and Jarabeck buildings. Mrs. A. R. Hoover, who has been very ill with typhoid fever, has improved and is expected to be able to sit ud within a week. The Gary attorneys will attend the banquet which is to be given to Clerk Wheeler in Chicago soon. Manager Hood is building a combination theater and saloon. which will be conducted on the music hall idea. It will cost about $15,000. It will be located on Jefferson and Ninth
avenue.
A. B. Maracus Is building a store with flats in the rear, and it is expected that it will be completed within a few weeks. II. Alshuler, whose department store is about completed, expects to open his business within two weeks.

COULD DIE IN PEACE THEN. Evansville, Ind., Oct. 22. Mrs. Ella Drummond, wife of Frank Drummond, is dead after a lingering Illness. When told she was going to die she prayed that her life might be spared until a good home was found for her baby.
