York avenue. Mrs. James Clark and family of Stieglltz Park, have gone to Alton to reside, where Mr. Clark is employed. Mr. and Mrs. George Schaaf have returned from California, where they spent their honeymoon with relatives of the bride. They will now be at lfome to their many friends at the Vater Bisters' home In Central avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parks of L,aPcrte avenue, are spending a few weeks with relatives in Ohio and Canada. Clyde Lampman was out for the first time yesterday since his recent nines . Miss Ella Klose is home from Valparaiso university to spend Saturday and Sunday with her mother, Mrs. A. Klose. Her room-mate, Miss Hess, a young lady from West Virginia, accompanied her. The Christmas club, which has been recently organized for the purpose of giving suggestions as , to Christmas gifts, held its second meeting yesterday at the home of Mrs. Gillette in Sheridan avenue. The officers of th organization are as follows: Mrs. .). Keller, president; Mrs. S. Campbell, vice president; Mrs. Hugh G. Muffit, secretary; Mrs. R. Humphreys, treasurer. Messrs. Clay Collins, James Smith and Robert Stewart have gone to Mo: rocco, Ind., to remain over Sunday. Beaumont Parks' division of the men's club will have charge of the services at the Congregational church tomorow night. Forty hours' devotion will be conducted In the Sacred Heart church, beginning tomorrow and ending Tuesday. The cervices will be conducted by a Redemptlonist Father from Chicago. The funeral of Mrs. Catherine Connor, who died at her home In Fischrupp avenue as the result of a tumor on the base of the brain, was held at the Sacred Heart church at 9 o'clock this morning. The Interment took place at Greenwood cemetery, Hammond. Mrs. Connor was a woman who had many friends, was a loving wife and a kind mother. She leaves to mourn her loss besides her husband, James Connor, three children, the eldest a daughter of thirteen, the next a daughter nine years of age, and the baby, two weeks old.

Emil Stark, who spent several days here with his parents returned to West Creek township. Ben Swanson was taken to the County Poor farm Friday. While in this neighborhood Ben was known as being very industrious, but since he returned from Mississippi, where he went some time ago with intentions of buying land he has been sick and as he was unable to do any work so far he was taken away. N. Mayer, who has the contract for building Jos. Gerlach's house was in town yesterday doing some preliminary work on the building place. Miss Mary Jordan returned from Hammond last night where she visited with relatives. Mrs. Jos. MIchals returned to Englewood Friday evening. Miss Sallle Herman, who Is working for Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Gerlach, was given a surprise party yesterday by some young people from Dyer. George Gerlach spent Friday in Hammond.

Turnes & Co. have finished the concrete walls in the basement of the north wing of the court house, and are now ready for the brick layers. Fred Helde of Chicago, agent for the Tosettl Brewing company, made his resular business trip to this place yesterday. John Meyer is clearing up the ruins of his barn, which was recently destroyed by fire, and it is reported that he Intends to put up a new brick structure in the same place. The Independent Order of Foresters of Crown Point, No. 4, drew a large crowd to their dance last night in the Central Music hall, and a very enjoyable time is reported by those who participated. Charles Collins and Jessie Berlin, both highly esteemed young people of this place, are victims of Dan Cupid and will be made man and wife next Wednesday at the home of the bride, two miles south of this place. mony. The structure, of brick and
stone, is valued at Jio.000 and is a tribute to the thrift and industry of
the Hungarian people.
W. R. Diamond Is remodeling his
store on Chicago avenue and is having
a steel ceiling set in place. When the repairs and alterations are completed

with crushed stone and intend having

The plan of letting the individuals

thus making the system give very
poor service.
Contractor Rumsey Is on hand to
day to meet with the town board for
the purpose of making the final ar
rangements In closing the sidewalk contract. He expects to begin work

Cost of English Paupers. Some startling figures of compari
son have been made to show the great
cost of English paupers. The English poor law foots up an expense of more than $75,000,000 a year, which Is as great as the entire annual expenditure of the kingdom of Holland, almost as much as that of Australia and New Zealand combined and equal to the whole public expenditure of Denmark, Greece and Norway.

Moberly, who recently underwent an operation, will be glad to earn that she is able to sit up, although not very strong yet. Mrs. Harriet Wlnslow and Mrs. W. B. Van Home and sons, Willard and wlnslow, are in the city today, having the childrens' pictures taken, it being Winslow's first birthday. Mrs. Hartigan of Englewood, was the guest og Mrs. C. C. Robinson, yesterday. A number of people from the Harbor attended the Eastern Star lodge in East Chicago last evening. Mr. Harry Hamman, who went to Alabama some weeks ago, returned to the Harbor, as the climate did not agree with him. Mrs. L. Seeds has friends from Iowa visiting her. Choose School Sites. The Gary school board met this morning at the headquarters and started out on a tour of inspection. They will look over various lots In all sections of the town for the purpose of chosing school sites. The south part of the town particularly will be given close attention as a large school house will be erected there in the near future.
Will Put on Vaudeville. Cal Harris, the well known sporting promoter, who Is trying to give the residents of Gary some live sporting events, is planning to make use of his big tent during the spare minutes between drawing up cards. Hereafter he will conduct a vaudeville show and put on boxing and wrestling at the same time. The plan is thought to be a good one and the first show will be given tomorrow night.
Briefs. The work on South Broadway is being rushed by the contractors so that it will connect with the Hobart road as soon as possible.
