HEW YOSK LETTEE. New York, Oct. 17. The same tension ex istc-d in the stock market at the opening this morning which prevailed at the close yesterday. ThJ starting- disclosures of one of tho stock exchange houses trying to run a vomer In a curb carper stock and refusing to receive the stock when offered fcr delivery, was the chief topic of conversation. Smelters and Copper touched new low levels. 'during the early part of tho

session. The former sold at and Copper at 43. These prices were not maintained up to the closing hour, however. Reports of a settlement of the stock brokerage houso In an amicable manner caused the shorts to start to covering- Union Pacific reeounded three points from the early low level.?; Copper advanced two; St. Paul one and one-half and Missouri Pacific two and one-ha If. Tho prominent Boston tpeculator v.-as out with another tirade and denunciation of the. '"Standard Oil" nunciation bbnu-fiilruetuieo.Sri tharod methods of stock speculation. This as a market factor was not given any consideration. ; ( r 3 The failure of a large banking Arm In Hamburg with liabilities of over $3,000,000 caused another temporary set-back in prices. Expressions In the street today Indicate that there are no fears of any further financial diiflcultles either In brokerage houses or banks. Soma very good Judges go so far as to advance the opinion that stocks are dragging close to the bottom for the present. They point out the oversold condition of tho market generally as the principal bull argument. The Amalgamated Copper directors reduced the dividend today, placing the stock upon a 4 per cent basis.

Joseph Do not make any sacrinccs of stock now. Buy them. Tom Lawson says the fact that Ileinze drops out of the management of the mercantile national and will hand in other resignations will help the situation. The Copper dividend today will cause the bears to cover In other directions. London market has been worked from this side. Pres

sures put on Pacific's. New York The market opened irregular but standard rails were inclined to rally after the first few minutes trading. Map showed an advance of two points while Can. Pac. was off l8 on the decline in London, Industrial list generally lower. Brown The situation is somewiiat mixed but the market seems to be heavily oversold and a great many stocks selling much below their real value. Miller We can only deduct that there will be plenty of time to figure on buying stocks on their real valuation. The close showed nothing more

than short covering and gives little hope of anything better than a continuation of liquidation. Ixgan New low prices were made all through the list. Yesterday's slump will no doubt tend to clear the atmosphere to an extent and naturally a rally should take place, but do not think It is time to expect a sustained advance. Closing with one-half cent rally from the low prices. The May option declined proportionately. The main factors in causing the decline were the disappointing foreign markets; Liverpool being oiT almost two pennies; lack of the excellent cash demand which has fcon the bull argument for the past ten days. Although foreign houses eent In depressing news as to the crops of Australia and India. use drought doing considerable damage, these factors coul.l not stem the selling wave. The Cincinnati Price Current in its weekly summary reports the early sown wheat making a good appearance, area of autumn seeding not likely to be below that of a year ago. Good progress in corn husking. CORN Suffered a decline of a cent and one-half caused mostly by outside liquidation and the belief that the crop damage stories have been largely exaggerated. Cash situation very dull while the recipta of corn at all primary markets continue surprisingly large.. The market closed weal at the decline OATS Dull, draggy and lowr. The cam sympathetic weakening influences

la probable stocks will have some reaction. Average steels and buy Pacific's on early dips. Financial Bureau Irregularity Is certain in the market today. The big interests aro simply allowing the market to find its own level and incidentally they are paying off old scores. Perhaps now that they have what

they prusued the list may find con

certed support again. The moveme.it is enormous and may have to lun

further.

Chandlers Rumors were busy all day with names and combinations that were a short time ago towers of strength and the liquidation in the group of which Smelters Is the central figure apparently gave credit to many of the rumors referred to. The lire still burns and is unfortunately extending. Mclntyre Stocks are now selling at panic prices and offer the investor chances for picking up bargains if they can be carried through the present confusion. Koshland The lower prices go the nearer we get Co the turn. We would think that prices should rally from present levels to some extent and the Investor should find it profitable to buy stocks. The Iron Trade Review today will sty: "The pig iron market at present Is like some football teams that are strong on the defensive but seldom score. Prices are being remarkably well maintained in spite of the effort of buyers to obtain concessions.

Considerable complaint Is made about

slow collections, but there is little

evidence of real distress. The de

mand for steel making pig iron in the Pittsburg district shows marked Improvement and Bales of about 7, GOO tons of basic on the basis of 919-75 valley furnace have been made, while inquiries are pending for some 100,000 tons of Bessemer. Shipments of iron ore from the head of the lakes for the first two weeks in October show an Increase of half a million tons as compared with tho same period last year. Announcement is made by Kuhn, Loeb & Co., that the firm is prepared to pay in cash $10,000,000 Pennsylvania 41 per cent collateral Improvement notes due Nov. 1. At the meeting of the dltectors of the Western Union Telegraph company the retiring officers were reelected.
