NEW YORK LETTER. New York, Oct. 16. The stock market had one of the sharpest and severest shake outs in many months. Missouri Pacific- was the target for the bear operators in today's market. The action of the railway commission in Nebraska compelling the Missouri Pacific railroad from running their trains faster than twenty-five miles per hour on account of the poor road bed, wa3 the thunderbolt which caused the slump. The report that of the more prominent western operators who is largely interested In copper stocks was caught long of Smelters and Copper and had been compelled to unload on account of Inability to negotiate loans upon his securities was another bearish factor. Smelters declined eight points and Copper five, rallying slightly near the close from the lowest prices of the day. The report of a prominent stock exchange house in trouble and rumors of others skating on thin ice helped the depression along. The losses throughout the list will average about three points for the railroads and almost four for some of the industrial shares. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET Descpt. Atchison . . Am. Sugar Arn. WHEAT Aggressive selling based largely opon weakness northwest made a lower level of prices today. Fluctuations, however, were nervous and frequent. Shorts wore early stampeded at times because of recent similar unpleasant experiences. Gradually, however, they gained courage. The report of 116 boat loads export business, which was reported from seaboard, caused one of sharpest rallies, but was soon discredited and bears quickly raided prices again. Thel report seems to be well authenticated tor sale of twenty-three boat-loads durum done late yesterday from Duluth is Included. Much of day's business was in durum and very largely from other ports other than seaboard. CORN Was firm early but weakened later. It developed that the eastern buyers were filled to their capacity, resellers were in possession of markets east and offering at much below Chicago basis and primary arrivals failed to fall off as expected. The. crop in ample market here was one-half to three-quarter cents and elevators the only buyers. OATS Trade was small with prices following other grains. Oat crop of France was officially estimated at 3S3,150,000 veisus 312,000,000 bushels. HIODITK MARKETS. New York Expressions of opinion by some of the leading stock market 'Interests this morning are a little more hopeful in regard to the Immediate outlook for prices. All statements of an optimistic nature on the market are qualified however, with the provisions that nothing further of an unfavorable character such as last weeks In regard to the local traction affair Is brought out. Close watchers of the market believe liquidation has run it3 course and that some rally on the technical conditions is now In order. We would advtse again at getting too bearish in the present soldout and oversold condition of the general market. Mclntyre. We see nothing in the situation to warrant anything but conservative buying on any breaks. Dick. Buy Union for moderate rallies. Keep long cotton oil. Joseph. There are probably some weak spots yet to be uncovered, especially in the Industrial list. Miller. It seems evident that further attacks cn the mraket will meet effective opposition and with easing in money conditions considerable improvement in prices should follow. Brown. There has been little buying except by professionals, but it should not be forgotten that in times of liquidation money on call accumulates and must find occupation and is perfectly willing and rather inclined to find it in listed stocks oven for a turn. Bartlett. There is undoubtedly something big stirring up. Secretary Courtelyou has arrived here and Rockefeller and Frick have come and it is reported that Morgan has also returned from Virginia. The presence of the secretary of the treasury may have something to do with the money situation. Mclntyre. Missouri. Oct, 10 No netrs of thp president's day's hunt has been received here. Brutus Jackson, the negro hunter who went to Newellton to locate a camp there last week, when it was decided to so there, has returned and brought a fresh supply of bear dogs with him, and an effort Is ltflriff made to secure even more from the same source to take the place of animals ou hand, which are be coming much jaded. Arrivals from the Bear Lake encampment tell marvelous stories of the president's hardihood and capacity for roughing it. He Makes the Natives Gasp. When he carried his blankets with him from the upper camp last Friday and that night and next morning a to only cold bread and meat he had taken In his saddle pockets they marveled that a president could be so easily satisfied; but when he jumped into Bear lake for a swim upon rising at daybreak their astonishment was almost 'Without bounds. The thermometer registered at the time less than 40 degrees, and most of the others present were sedulously hugging the camp fire. The president plunged Into the water as soon as he arose. And They Took the Dare. As he approached the edge of the lake he bantered some of the other members of his immediate party t Joint him, but none did so. He swam a distance of 100 yards to an Island, and then returned, declaring upon landing that theexercise had been most exhiliarating and that the water was warmer than the air. The fact thnt be seems almost tireless in the saddle la most favorably commented upon and is regarded as quite marvelous for one of such exalted position and upposedly sedentary life. Hnnt to End on Saturday. It Is now the president's puprpose to close his hunt with the last round on Saturday, and to come Into Stamboul early Sunday. lie will spend Sunday afternoon and Snndaynight at the residence of I.eo.
