DEEP WATER-WAY LEGISLATION.
The Illinois Legislature is again In session re-convening after a summer Vacation. The principal problem claiming attention Is the Sanitary District legislation. The district Is endeavoring to secure the passage of a law to enable them to extend the channel several miles below Lockport, on a plan to develop the Immense water power. The people of Joliet and the valley generally oppose the bill because of elevating the channel through Joliet Is a menace to life and property. The situation is made more interesting on account of the attitude of the deep water-way convention at Memphis recently. It is evident that the people of the Mississippi valley are determined upon having a deep water-way from the lakes to the Gulf, and when united that portion of the United States of America ought to and will succeed. This problem Is of immense interest to the Calumet region as has been already pointed out a deep water-way through the Chicago river to Lake Michigan is utterly impracticable.
The only alternative is the Calumet river route. This is already apparent to the most eminent engineers In Chicago. Already the sanitary district have appealed for aid in developing the Calumet branch; with this extension the logical
route will be through the Calumet river to Lake Michigan. Thus is Indiana vitally interested. It behooves our people and their representatives in congress to get busy. With a national canal through the Calumet region the benefit is Inestimable. The action of the legislature at Springfield and of congress next
w'uter will be followed with Interest by the people of this region. BASEBALL, AN HONEST SPORT.

The telephone bell had rung three
times, and Marnie, hearing it and concluding that tfie matron's ofSce in which the instrument was sta

"St. Lukes?" said a familiar voice
at the other end of the line.
The thought passed through Mar-
nie's mind that the tone was just
like Marshall's, but, not knowing he was in town, she was hardly prepared to hear the voice continue:
"This is Marshall Merrleweather.
Will you please ask Mrs. "Weber to send Marnie Dougherty over to Mrs.
Methven's at once?"
"Oh, Marshall! Is that you? This is Marnie here. When did you get back?" "Oh! That you? Glad to see you,
or rather to hear you, Marnie. I
thought I'd heard that voice before. I reached town last night. I would have come over for you myself, but Mr. Methven want's me to attend to a little matter for him.. Shall I tell them you are coming?" "I will ask Mrs. Weber. Here she is now." With his ear still at the receiver,
Marshall could hear a few inquiries and answers and then in a moment
came the cheery reply:
"You may say, if you please, that
I will be over at once."
"Marnie, child, you must have a fever. I never saw your cheeks so red before!" said Mrs. Weber as Marnie replaced the receiver. "Are you quite well?" "Quite, thank you," replied Marnie, as the flush on her cheeks mounted to her temples and she sped away. It was provoking that she could not even be reminded of Marshall
without flushing like a tropical sunset, as she told herself in disgust.
