, HEW YORK LETTER. ' New York, Oct 12. General demoralization prevailed again in the stock market. One of ttu; most active Saturdays Bf-en in ytars. Transactions for the first hour bting 450,000 shares. New low records were established for Copier and Smelter . The former selling 'under 63; Smelters touching 75. The disturbance in the metal world is creating havoc in these two Industrials. Lack of demand for copper and the prediction that the consumers will hold oft for twelve cents per pound Is the bearish factor. Liquidation, however was pronorniced rln other quarters besides the industrial shares. Northern Pacific touched new low ground, selling at HS$i. This represents almost a hundred points depreciation since the hight-xt prices prevailing a year ago. Union Pacific touched U8i; seventy points below the high records established in 1905. The recent decision in Los Angeles in which the Atchison company was fined a large sum for rebating gave that stock a black eye. It broke from 82 to H0 on free selling by the bear clique. Each day discloses a new weak spot lit the market and the bear crowd take advantage of it. The southwestern group of railroads seem lo be the particular target at present. St. Louis and Southwestern preferred shares sold oft five points from 40 to 35 on the sale Of about 1,000 shares. The shortage of all kinds of crops in the southwest will cause sonw very startling shrinkages in the earning capacity of these lines and must necessarily cause reductions in their dividend disbursement. The market generally closed weak ' end feverish without any apparent support.

Another sensational advance in wheat, December soi,i as high as 106; May at 1114. which Is new high records upon the present crop. Despite only a fractional advance in tho Liverpool market, the local market started off strong and higher with short covering discernible throughout the session. Houses with northwestern connections were the chief buyers, aided by one or two of the more prominent Chicago commisfdon houses. The continued excellent cash .demand, both at home and abroad Is the chief topic of gossip. Clearances today were over 600,000. Sales to exporters liberal, the foreign bids did not conform to the weak appearing Liverpool markets. Foreigners were bidding eagerly for all grades of wheat. 1 CORN: Strong and higher. .New high records being scored for the May option. The unseasonable weather and talk of crop damage being the prlncl-

pal reason for the advance. The over

sold condition of this market may result in still further advances. The closing prices were about the best of the session. OATS: For the ttrst time in a week, there was a broader market in this cereal. May oats sold over 57 cents. Crop shortages ut all cereals are making record-breaking prices for all the commodities traded in upon this exchange. The market closed strong. rnoutcc markets. HEARD ON THE B0UHSH The new orders of the American Car and Foundry company as well as those of the Pressed Steel Car company are reported to have fallen of? materially. A great many projects for railroad extension have been abandoned, so that the promised new business has not materialized. The difficulty of raising money has compelled many roads tr stop adding to equipment. Money continues a very sc-irco at tide, but there Is hope that the sentiment of the heavy commercial maturities in the textile trade, which are now falling, being heaviest from Oct. 10 to Oct. 15. will have a tendency to ease the strain. Up to date these maturities have been met In a very satisfactory manner. Commercial paper at 7 per cent for choice and 74 per cent for good names is being taken in a little inore freely though the buying Is of very moderate amount. Sterling exchange continues strong, owing to the scarcity of cotton bills. Return of New York tax money to the regular channels has helped call money a little, but time loans on collateral bold stiff at 6 per cent bid for feixty days and 64 centjild for ninety days with the latter not obtainable under 7 per cent. The Whiting public library has added to new tables to their reading rooms, one for the adults and one for the children's room. A valuable addition which has been made to the library within the last week was sixtytwo bound volumes of leading magazines, which will add greatly to the already large list of reference books. Another interesting feature In connection with the library Is the collection of mounted pictures, which are issued to patrons just as books. There are pictures on almost any subject, such as science, travel, history, art, etc. This collection Is being added to continually. The librarian Is making every effort to work with the teachers and Is aiding them by furnishing books required for their use. Posters are also made with a view to helping the children with their work. As several classes are now studying chivalry, an interesting collection of books on the subject, with a beautiful poster of King Arthur and his knights are now on exhibition. A strong point is In getting the children into the habit of using the library, for the habit formed when young proves to be a strong Influence through life, and carries on education long after school is over. The teachers are granted special privileges, they being given the privilege of having a teachers card on which they may draw five books at one time for school use and these may be kept one month. The library has books on almost every profession, art or handicraft that workers who care to study may perfect themselves in their work. It also has a good supply of fiction, which supplies the public with recreative read ing, and books and periodicals which give the thoughts of the best writers on the economic and social questions now under earnest discussion. If a person wishes a book which is not on the shelves, requests may be made and an effort will be made to procure them if given notice of the time when actually needed. The men's smoking room, which has been closed for the summer months, will now be open and will be com fortably fitted up, containing a file of daily papers and magazines of in terest to men. An effort will be made to have this room rightfully conducted and it should be especially useful to those who have a dormant fondness for read ing and lack home opportunities. Miss Lila Schoeneman, teacher of the sixth grade, is very ill at her home In LaPorte avenue. Mcfsdames Jesse Brinker of Whiting and L. Funkhouser of East Chicago have been acting as sustitutes. Gray Hair !n the Young. A peculiarity about the gray hair of the young is that it is almost always entirely white, and becomes bo suddenly. All the hairs are equally affect ed, and one seldom sees the mixed color, or iron gray, so common in those of middle or advanced age. Cows with Earrings. In Belgium all cows over thrc months old are to be seen waring tarings. Breeders are obliged to kec a record of all cattle ralaed by theand each animal has a registered tra-: number, which Is engraved on t: ring fastened to its ear. The Charming Woman. Kindness of heart and considerationfor others give charm to the manners of woman. The unselfish woman with agreeable manners who strives to be in sympathy with the lives of her associates is charming. Gulte Llkefy.
