NEW YORK LETTER. New York, Oct. 7. Tho day's trading on the stork exchange was Influenced to a great extent by development in the Hill stocks. Karly in the day an announcement of an extra dividend on Great Northern preferred started an upward movement in that stock which ctianK'-'i the torn: of the general market from weak to strong and started an advance in the majority of the list that continued until the close. In tho late trading- the strong feeling was Increased by rumors that tho Northern Pacific directors will declare an extra dividend tomorrow. The course of prices of leading stocks during the day was almost uniform. At the close tho leading rails showed gains ranging from one to over two points, with the Hill stocks showing tho greatest advances. Ah a whole tho day's business was of only moderate volume. Do nds irregular.

Chicago, Oct. 7. An advance of two to 2 l-8c was scored in wheat early, but it was not all retained. Bullish sentiment was rampant, but it carried prices above where the export demand would follow it, with the result that many local holders unloaded. This cauned the reaction. Strength early was based largely on the. strength of northwestern markets and the fact that all wheat offering abroad Saturday had been accepted. All the spring wheat
markets were sharply higher, the winter gaining less. Foreigners were credited with selling futures on today's bulge here. Cash sales, 45,000 bushels; seaboard, 0 loads. CORN Trading was by no means a3 spirited as wheat. There was. a sympathetic advance, based on the wheat bulge and bullish cables, but the gain was not as large as in wheat and it wa3 not all maintained. The Iowa crop was estimated by the secretary of the Grain Dealer's Associtaion of that Ktato at about the same as was indicated by tho government September report, or 300,000,000. against 373,000,000 bushels last year, and an average of about 302,000.000 bushels. Cash sales, 145,000 bushels; seaboard, 14 loads. OATS Trading was of small volume but prices were helped by strength in other grains. There was only a moderate demand for shipment, but locel demand appeared to be absorbing offerings and prices in the sample market were c higher. Cash sales, 120,000 bushels. PROVISIONS Slightly firmer, with grain, and in response to a good trade in cash product, but trade was limited. Local packers bought a little lard.

KEAED ON THE B0UKSE. Bank statement not good-owing to heavy loss in cash. Decision on state receivership for N. Y. City Railway reserved. President Finley of Southern railway ridicules receivership stories. Chicago reports pig iron and steel products selling at lower prices. Demand for currency from now on will come principally from south. London reports money more plentiful
but makes heavy shipment of gold to
Egpyt today. . Dun's Review says no changes oc
curred In condition of iron and steel In
dustry.
Report here that Morgan has bought about 5,000 Steel Common daily for
about a week. Forty-five roads for August show
average net Increase 2.5S per cent and
for two months 4.32 per cent. Bradstreet says trade reports are ir
regular with disposition to get back to an average good condition. Arbitrage houses were doing scarcely anything, and the supply of commission house orders was very poor. Stocks are cheap for investors and if timid capital were to come out, we feel sure that values would show Improvement. B. R. T. opened heavy and lower on further selling, based upon the contradiction of dividend rumors by the president of the road. Stock Market Opinions. Logan & Bryan We are disposed to look for an irregular market with the standard issues a purchase on breaks. Dick Bros. The market may continue dull and uncertain for a time. In our opinion,, however, the combination of dullness and firmness as shown yesterday is a rather encouraging sign. ' Banks Surplus Banks hold nearly $7,000, 000 less surplus than a year ago and loss In cash was far greater than the banks expected. It leaves New York in very poor shape for the beginning of the crop movement.
