Dr. II. P. Swartz, cashier of the Commercial bank of this place, returned home the latter part of last week from a two weeks' visit in Colorado. Trustee Charles Meeker is busy opening the Adarn-IIetzer road on the north end of Cedar Lake, and when completed will be one of the prettiest drives around the lakes. Edward C. Grlesel and bride will leave tomorrow morning for their new home in Muskogee, Indian Territory, where Mr. Griesel is in the practice of Jaw. Their many friends wish them abundant success in their new adventures. Emmet Collins received a telegram from a large corporation of Muskogee, Indian Territory, to be at their office the middle part of this week, where he is employed as a draftsman. William Cook took an automobile trip to East Chicago last Saturday, for the interest of the Crown Point Telephone company. John C. Agnew, court bailiff of the superior court, and his wife, visited friends and relatives over Saturday and Sunday. Miss Viola Hall left yesterday for Chicago, where she has accepted a position with the Waterman Fountain Pen company. Ernest Shortrldge, clerk-elect, and the superior court reporter, was in Crown Point Saturday. Frank Krlmbill and William Cook saw the "Red Mill" at the Grand opera house, Chicago. The Crown Point high school football team played the Chicago Heights high school team last Saturday. The game resulted in a score of 19 to 0 in favor of the home team. The Crown Point school board voted for electric service for the North Ward Bchool, on conditions that the electrical company puts in a day current. Guy Kelsey and William Cook were visiting friends in Hammond over Sunday. The Crown Point Telephone company will install a new up-to-date switch .board, and when installed, hope to give the patrons tho best satisfaction, which Will be on or about Jan. 1, next. The death of little Vera B. Handley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Handley of this place, occurred last Friday afternoon at tho age of two years. The burial took place yesterday A party of young people of Crown Point went to the Kankakee river yesterday morning for the days' outing. The Crown Point baseball team defeated the Kenwood team of Chicago here yesterday afternoonat the baseball grounds northeast of the Erie depot, by a score of 19 to 6. The game was called at 2 o'clock with the home boys at the bat. During the first half of the game it looked very slim for the Chicago team, but managed to get in some fine work toward the last. While practicing yesterday morning. Kenning, the regular pitcher for the home team, sprained his wrist and the vaccancy was filled by Delbert McCoy, who done excellent work. It is said that the Kenwood team has made a good record this season. The dancing party given by the I. T. Trump's orchestra last Saturday evening was reported by all. H. E. Sasse was a Chicago visitor last Saturday. The Senior and Junior Endeavor of the Presbyterian church held a united meeting yesterday evening. Marriage Licenses. men by the Lake Shore limited Saturday evening, the entire day kept the police department and other city officials on the jump. George Yearion was quite badly injured Friday afternoon by a passing freight train on the Lake Shore railroad. He was standing at the express company platform on the north side of the track and when the train came along he failed to notice that he was too close until the moving cars struck him in the side, giving him a bad contussion of the right hip, knocking out several teeth and otherwise bruising him considerably. He was removed to Mercy . hospital in Chicago after Drs. Walsh and Templin had dressed the wounds. He was a laborer living at 0827 State street in Chicago.

Miss Lizzie De Heas of Lansing was around buying cabbage in Munster this p. m. EAST CHICAGO NEWS Arthur Keenan visited friends in Gary yesterday. Many East Chlcagoans are investing in lots in the new addition near the Steel Car plant in Hammond. This ad dition bids fair to equal Morris addition. Mrs. A. C. Huber of Gary, came over from Gary the latter part of the week to visit relatives in this city. While here she enjoyed an auto ride with Mrs. G. E. Reiland and Mrs. J. D. Williams. Judge Jones, of Whiting, sat as special city judge at the city hall, Saturday. The judge dismissed the defendants. Oxby and Dugan of Indiana Harbor who were charged with assault and battery. The city council meets Attorney Mt t calf, representing the bond-holders for final settlement of the water and light litigation tonight. As this Is a question of grave importance, it is expected that an unusually large number of citizens will be present. Members of the M. E. church enjoyed a rare treat Sunday evening, when Sydney Veaco made his debut in the musical world of this city as a member of the choir. The Dyer baseball boys went to Schererville yesterday afternoon to play the boys there. The score was 12 to 4 in favor of Dyer. LOWELL NEWS The Lowell high school foot ball team went to Momence Saturday and were defeated by a score of 11 to 0. Fred Busse's horse, mention of which was made in this column, died at Ed. Black's last Saturday. Mr. Busse recently paid $f0 for the animal and refused $500. Mrs. A. G. Plummer is building an addition to her fine residence in Burnham street. On account of a wreck on the Monon there was no trains Sunday until late in the afternoon. Several of our citizens who had planned on a trip, went to Hayden road rode on the Indiana Harbor railroad. Charley Wagin of Chicago, is visiting his mother, Mrs. A. S. Wagin and sisters. Miss Maggie and Mrs. E. E. Duckworth and husband. Mr. and Mrs. William Buckly are en joying a week's visit with their son, Dr. J. P. Buckley and family in Chicago. Mrs. Rev. The Rally Day exercises were held last evening at the Evangelical church which was very prettily decorated with autumn leaves and flowers for the oc casion. The attendance was unusually large and a delightful ' program was given, the songs and recitations by the children were excellent, the songs by the choirs were well rendered and ap preciated by the audience. Altogether it was a decided success and speaks well for the pastor, Rev. W. H. Halmhuber, and also Mrs. F. R. Schaaf, Jr., Mrs. John Blaul and Mrs. G. W. Grisdale, who have shown great patience in teaching the children their various parts. The Ladles' Aid society of the Evan gelical church will hold a special ses sion tonight at the home of Mrs. John Blual of Roberts avenue. The Hammond high school football team defeated the Valparaiso high school team at the fair grounds Saturday by a score of 30 to 0. Hirschy of Chicago re turned home yesterday after a short visit with Oscar Hautes. Dal Nowles and wife departed for Lamar, Colo., yesterday. His mother Mrs. David Nowles remains in a very bad condition, but seems to be getting no worse and may live for some time yet. A very quiet wedding took place Sat urday evening. The couple being two of Rennselaer's most popular young people, Bert Hopkins and Miss Harriet Yeoman. The ceremony was performed in a very quiet manner In the presence of only a very few relatives. They de parted on the evening train for Chicago. GRIFFITH NEWS Ed Dutton of Ross spent a short time in town today. Math. Kuhn and Ira Schofield transacted business In Highlands yesterday. A. L. Russell of the A. L. Russell Real Estato compay, went to Chicago on business today. Miss Melcher took charge of room 2 at the North school Friday afternoon on account of the illness of Mrs. Baisen, the regular teacher. Street Supervisor Jansen is lowering the surface of a part of .East Main street so that it will conform to the level of the grade established for the new sidewalks. FRESHLES HOLD THE FORT. Greencastle, Oct. 5. The annual ft eshmen-sophomore class scrap was held as a curtain raiser before the game. A flag bearing the numerals of the freshmen class, 1911, was nailed to a post some six feet high on the center of the field and was surrounded by some two hundred and fifty freshmen. Something like two hundred sophmores charged the flag and for twenty minutes a fierce battle raged. But the sophmores were unable to dislodge it and at the end of the proscribed twenty minutes the freshmen were yet in possession. Hardy Keiiman and John McEniff were in Chicago Saturday where they acted as pall bearers at the funeral of Carl Meyers, who was killed by a Rock Island train in Chicago, Thursday. Mr. John Gordon and his brother-in-law, William Curry and family, will leave about Wednesday for New York City, where they will reside. Gordon and Curry were formerly prosperous merchants here, but recently they have worked in the Whiting supply store. Miss Winnie Fieres, who has been for a long time recovering from an attack of typhoid fever, will return to her duties in the gas office here about the 15 Inst. Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Beardsley of Hammond visited the latter's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Al Gordon, Saturday evening. Mr. Ambrose McGregor of East Chicago, called on friends here yesterday. Mr. C. O. Record, assistant manager of the telephone office, entertained his sister and husband. Mr. and Mrs. Coy and little son, of Chicago yesterday. Mrs. Esswein, who has been here taking care of her daughter, Mrs. Jacob Kellman. jr., who is seriously 111 at her home In Sheridan avenue, returned to her home in Chicago yesterday.
