NEW YORK LETTER. New York, Oct. 5. The same stagnant condition prevailed In tho etock market as upon the previous days this week. The tntire range of the active list did not exceed one point with a slight rally in Reading, Copper and Union Pacific which was not maintained. Tho s;une (juiet liquidation continues in the southern stocks. Southern Hallway common touched a new low record, selling at 12. Tne Preferred shares were slightly weaker. This road must be in a bad way financially. It is hinted that the next dividend on the preferred shares will either be reduced or passed entirely. Hock Island common and preferred were also subject to bear pressure The common shares displayed very little resistance to the bearish attacks and as a consequence almost reached new low levels. The weakness In these low priced stocks Is acting as a damper upon any bullish demonstration In other quarters. After the issuance of the bank statement, the market gradually became weaker, closing soft at about the lowest prices of the session. The trade as a rule was expecting a bad bank statement, but the one
brought forth was even worso than the most pessimistic expected. It may result In further declines In the general market Monday morning. Trade is so narrow and professional that declines or advances do not extend very far either way.

CHICAGO LETTER. 1 Chicago, Oct. 5. Wheat ruled strong and higher although very dull. December wheat sold at 102; May at 10S, closing fairly strong near the high figures of the day. The same class of bullish news permeated the grain pits as usual. The chief topic which had the strengthening lnllm nee was the cash situation. Reports of additional sales of wheat to export-rs which was confirmed this morning gave the cash demand a very legitimate appearance. New York reported foreigners in the market for all grades of ur wheat and at advances In their bids. Some of tlie more conservative houses, those that express opinions very reluctantly, have advised their clients to purclia.se wheat t.pon all little dips. They base their opinion upon the excellent cash demand from abroad and the shortage of the crop in this country. Northwestern houses helped the advance along by buying moderate blocks e-f wheat on every little break. CORN" A trifle stronger but trade very narrow and professional. May corn had a range of about a half a cent, selling as high as 59. There was no particular feature to the trade. Operators as a rule are awaiting developments from the new crop before Inaugurating a bull campaign in this cireal. Crop conditions in the corn belt are mor favorable. The frost scares have abated In the southwest. Cash demand for corn rather slack. The market closed steady. OATS Dull and lifeless. Market entirely neglected. The high prices prevailing for oats prevents the outside rubllo from trading in this cereal. In their opinion tho current prices have discounted any crop shortage.

HEARD ON THE BOURSE. Harriman buying Steel. Canadian Pacific earnings, 4th week, Sept. $2,021,000, inc. $17,000; month Sept. $6,351,000, Inc. $250,000; from July 1, $20,259,274, ins. $2,093,306. I can't see anything to buy stocks on, except the periodical run in of the shorts, which Is apt to break out most any time, but on those bulges think stocks a sale. Minneapolis, St. Paul, S. S. M. earnings. August gross $1,021,935; Dec. $33,S78; net. $36S,25S, Dec. $122,13S; from July, gross. $2,116.S21, Dec. $21,964; net. $774,692, Dec. $254,930. The Hill stocks made a better showing early and were among the very few which responded to the early rally
in London. The foreign selling of them
seems to have been completed for the present. London traded in about 15,000 shares buying a little stock on balance first, but soiling nearly as much in the later trading. The foreign transactions were mainly in Steel, So. Ry.. Reading and Union Pacific. Tiie pamphlet report of B. R. T. for the fiscal year ended June 30, shows gross earnings $19,381,587; Inc. $90S,259. Operating expenses $11,467,705; Inc. $1,024,327. Net earnings $7,915,883; dec. $116,$6S. Other Income. $555,166; Inc. $231,230. Total income $8,471,048; inc. $155,1C2. The financial situation in N. Y. Is slowly Improving. There is a moderate amount of investment buying going on 811 the time. Some of the best Informed people think that there will not be much of an upturn in the stock market until after the beginning of new year, but at the same time concede that most all good stocks and bonds are selling at bargain prices. We do not look for any special moves at present and market will continue professional. There seems to be a strong fight going on for proxies for the next Illinois Central meeting and this may effect the market temporarily at some time. It is evident that general liquidation is over. Stocks are well taken but the bears have made the
money and can do at present as they please. Technical conditions are generally held to be the sole governing influences in the stock market for the time being. Close observers of the trading believe that there will be some further retirement of short contracts today which will result in a further rally in prices. A3 soon as the shorts have covered their lines, however, it is expected that the market, then deprived of this support, will resume its sagging tendency. Monetary conditions are such that the more influential financial factions are not disposed to take any hand in tlie market, except the shape of exttndMig occasional support when the declines becomes too abrupt. So far as the public is concerned, commission houses report that they are receiving orders now and then for investment purchases, but the volume of th-se is not sufficient to have any material influence. There was very little response to the improvement in London, but tlie tone was fairly good. Traders seemed willing to operate for a rally with any encouragement. Candian Pacific responded in the first transactions to the better tone shown in London. Traders do not believe that the stock is anything like so scarce as it looks. They say a line of stock held in Canada is being sold and borrowed to make the amount is liquidated. The market developed a fair amount of strength in the afternoon, with B. R T. and Amal. in good demand and apparently wanted by interests connected with the management of those properties. Both stocks moved up easily and helped induce buying of a number of active Issues, including the Harriman and Hill stocks. The moderate demand was large enough to absorb all the stocks in sight at a range of about one point from lowest and in the late trading the majority of the list showed fractional net gains. The squeeze in call money was the outward cause of this last break. Manipulation of course was the real cause. We don't think that certain big interests want prices lower so much as to create a scare among Investors and the public at large, perhaps to arouse resentment against Roosevelt's policies, perhaps to pick up stock market bargains themselves; probably both, and for other reasons as well that we can only suspect. There has been nothing extraordinary about the action of the market the past few weeks. September is usually a retrograde month. Many Industrials have gone lower than we thought but the railroads have held as well as could be expected. The movement of money, -of the week would appear to make an unfavorable bank statement, possible and even apart from this there is very little to encourage the hope of active support to the market of a speculative character. It is quite possible that business reports wilj continue to show some moderate activity in the harvest sections of the country, but there is no doubt of the fact that in nearly all directions where plans for future development of a structural character are under consideration, that the utmost conservatism will be pursued. It is needless to state that after the necessities of the harvest of various crops shall have passed, that the labor market is quite likely to be overstocked, a development which may present a serious problem at a time when railroad and other structural business will be less active.
