INDUSTRIAL CENTERS,

BY EXCLUSIVE WIRE TO THE LAKE COUNTY TIA1ES

SEW YOEK LETTER. New York, Oct. 4. The stock market was practically devoid of feature. The closing prices tonight do not show a chance of over a quarter of point

either way compared with last night's final figures. With the exception of1 the Bouthern stocks, the market ruled BliRhtly firmer. Southern Railway common and preferred, and Louisville and Nashville were the weak features. There has been constant liquidation going orf in Southern Railway for some time. The stock has been paying 5 per cent. It is not believed, however, that the company can continue this dividend on account of the decrease In earnings. The slight dip in Louisville and Nashville was occasioned by a few professional traders making an effort to test the market to nee If this issue waa susceptible to bear pressure. Support was forthcoming, however, and their efforts were fruitless. Coppers and Smelters In the Industrial group were about the strongest of any of the active list. Call money ruled firm in the first part of the session, loans being made at 6 per cent but later eased oft to 4 per cent.

The market closed steady without

especial features.

Chicago, Oct. 4. WHEAT Had a range of a cent a bushel, opening strong, at 101 8 but closing weak at 100 Vi. There was enough bull news in circulation to cause a generous advance, but the buying power was lacking. Crop expert Snow Issued a lengthy revlew of the crop situation for wheat, corn and oats. His estimate on winter wheat Is smaller than that of the government, being 368 million and that of spring wheat at 225 million making a total yield 593 million. This gave the market the early strength but large sales to take profits stemmed the tide and brought about a reaction of about a cent a bushel. The foreign situation 3s undoubtedly a strong one; cables this morning reilected the apprehension over the crops in India and Australia. The amount of wheat taken yesterday and today by exporters Is estimated variously from fifty to one hundred loads. Somo conservative traders placing the amount at fifty loads.

Bullish news throughout the conditions In the looked. Opinions differ

the large export

tinuous demand for our foreigners but in the main, lty of the board houses b legitimate and will cause

market sooner or later. CORN Dull and slightly lowe

n range of a half a cent for the day. Snow estimates a crop of between 25 and 26 million. This was construed as bearish; this estimate was made, however, before the plant had bei n attacked by frosts. Its effect on the market was only temporary. Trade very dull and narrow. OATS Dull, uninteresting market. Only a quarter of a cent range fe-r the entire session.
