HEW YOKE LETTE3L New York. Kept. 27. The stock market dLspliiyf J a weak undertone from the v;ry owning this morning. At no time throughout the session was thr-rn any rallying power. Renewed lluMabeun In the Industrials on a rig;tntlu scalo. A new low record was established for Copper and Kteel preferred. A3 was remarked yesterduy, tin; steel shares aru in a vulnerable position for bearish attacks. Tho "belief that the Btool and iron business has reached the zenith of its prosperity for the present and that tho earnings will show decreases for the next quarter is accepted as certain. Copper Bold down from 60 i to 57 Mi. one half point lower than the previous low prioo cm the last dip. The soiling seemed to emanate from Boston. Copper stocks in that market were also weak and under presKiiro. The metal situation is not yet clear. Although the Amalgamated company has made determined efforts to hold the price of the metal at fifteen cents per pound, It is hinted, and upon tho best authority, that the Independent producers are underselling them. It is said that such mines as Calumet & Ilecla aro sold up to the end of the year and are making new contracts at prices under 15 cents per pound. This unsettled condition, if it continues for any length of time, will show a largo decrease in tho earnings of nil copper companies. That the Amalgamated company will cut the dividend at the next regular meet is not believed, although the street has been full of rumors to that effect. The standard rails were not exempt from tho bear movement. Union Pacific sold off from 128 to 126V6: St. Paul from 118 to 117; Atchison, 87 to 86; New York Central, 105 4 to 104 U and tho balance of the list varying from one-half to one point. Southern Pacific was offered down from 854 to 834 on tho report that the company had been indicted by a San Francisco Jury for rebating. To add to the general discomfiture, call loans were marked up to 6 per cent. Tho market as a whole closed weak and erratic. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET Descp. Atchison . . Am. Sugar Am. Car . . Amal. Cop. CHICAGO LETTER. Chicago. Sept. 27. Wheat started the day strong and higher with shorts fair buyers. December wheat sold as high ns 101 and back to 99, closing weak at $1.00. May sold at 107 and down to 105 Ts. closing at the latter figure. Tho news was bullish enough ia Itself to sustain values, but the l-uyins was lacking. Everybody seemed to be Imbued with tho idea that wheat was a sale around 101 for the December and 107 for the May. There were reports of a largo block of new red winter wheat sold for export at fair advances over yesterday's prices. Some enthusiasts went so far as to estimate the amount at 500.000, this, however, was regarded as an exaggeration. In all probability the amount sold to exporters will not exceed 200,000. This bullish factor caused the early spurt In prices. Foreign markets were disappointing with the late Liverpool prices being quoted one-half penny lower. Crp news from the northwest was a little more reassuring although weather conditions continue unseasonable and this fact is delaying harvesting in that section. Clearances for the day were liberal at 2SS.000, both wheat and flour. The receipts at che primary markets were larger than a year ago; locally the arrivals did not reach tho expectations by fifty cars. The Modern Miller reports winter wheat seeding has besun though preparations of the soil
Is not yet completed in some localities; drought has delayed seeding in tho southwest and parts of Nebraska. CORN A new high level was recorded for tho May option today. It touched 61, but the advance was not all maintained, closing firm at 60. There are a great many weather bulls in the corn pit. Their mode of operation la to scan the weather map for frosts and other discouraging elements to the growing crop and then proceed to buy a bunch of corn, expecting the public to take it oft their hands at the high levels. They succeed In marking up the price but the public continues skeptical as to the amount of damage done to the crop and therefore held aloof. There are si many reports In circulation each contradicting the other th.'JL it is difficult to sift the true from the untrue. The arrivals of old corn still increase, the farmers appear willing to sell at the prevailing prices. The speculative market closed firm. OATS Had a range of three-quarters of a cent, closing weak at the low price of the session. There is some quiet liquidation going on in this pit on every advance. The market closed weak.

Conservative houses here advise purchase of good railroads on all recessions. Southern requirements to move cotton now principal factor In money market. Virginia Iron and Coke surplus for year ending June 30, $660,000. Inc. $499,563. Chicago reports shipments of currency for crops lighter than at this time last year. Eleven roads for third week ending Sept. show average gross increase 6.37 per cent. Amalgamated Copper Tho buying of Amalgamated Copper Is good this morning, London firms being among the buyers. Pennsylvania earnings for year gros3 $157,554,000. Inc. $15,801,000. Net. $44,869,000. Inc. $2,080,000. Surplus decrease, $2,971,000. The public is unable to help In this market as the commercial situation Is anything but encouraging at present and tho labor situation is not the best either. Some of the heaviness in the leaders arises from a general disposition to let the market alone until tho course of money over the end of money Is clearer. However, when good dlvldena paying stocks are on a six cent basis, it behooves investors to look around and they will rind good opportunities for profitable purchases., Stock Market Opinions. A. O. Brown & Co. A further advance in the price of the New York City bonds helped to rally the market a little in the afternoon, but demand for other bonds continues rather light. Allis-Chalmers The annual meeting of the stockholders of the AlllsChalmers Co. which was scheduled for today was adjourned to Oct. 24 owing to the wishes of a quorum. Copper Stocks. A large producer says they will probably carry the Copper they have until they can get a reasonable market and that they can borrow 9 c. on the pound In Europe today. T. A. Mclntyre & Co. We would suggest the purchase of only the best of dividend paying stock3 of the railroad list on further breaks from this level with the view of securing profits promptly whenever a point or two is shown. All active Issues are highly satisfied with the bank of England's showing. It would not be unusual to have some littlo demand over Friday at this time of year, but even In this respect the outlook is not considered threatening. D. J. Nothing new to say. Conditions Justify higher prices, but prices are not going up until the big fellows are ready. Traders are not ldsposed to buy stocks and the general level Is too low to encourage short sales. Ridgely. One can hardly account for the weakness In the market at present, there are no new developments' and while the decline may be attributed to bear manipulations, It Is certain that no support was given of any consequence by any of the large financial interests. Miller tic Co. The larger Interests are slowly awaiting further develop ments. Any betterment In the copper trade or less aggressiveness on the part of the administration would serve towards a good rally since the floating supply of speculative committments is so small. The many influences recently wlrk ing for a decline have been so frequently noted that their repetition here would be pointless at this time. It is only necessary to state that there appears to be no reasonable chance for a change In the attitude of the administration In corporation matters, which, however, just and legal, has restricted both investment and speculative Interest In the market within very narrow lines. That trade activities have already suffered curtailments is generally admitted, and its reflection in the next year's earnings of aU corporations is among tho near certainties of the economic situation. It remains to be seen how much of this has been discounted in present values of stocks and bonds While much can be said in favor of the security list, as presenting oppor tunities tor irsTcstment, there is very little to be Bald in favor of tha speculative movement la the very near fu ture

During field operations of the Brlt Ish troops at Aldershot It was desire! to serve hot coffee during the hours of darkness to the 60ldlera lying la the trenches. As It was found Lmpos elble to light fires during the night or early morning for fear of betraying the position to the enemy, the coffee was made in the evening, and, whila still boiling, was buried in camp ket ties with close-fitting lids a few feet in the ground and slightly packed with; earth. When the pits were opened ia the early morning the coffee vjaa found to be still hot and ready ta serre. Envy. Envy Is an awkward homage that Inferiority pays to merit, Lallotta.
