INDUSTRIAL CENTERS,
NEW YORK LETTER. New York, Sept. 23. The stock market suffered a slight reaction today due In the main to profit taking by professional operators who purchased stocks last week. Copper and Smelters were again the weak Issues. The report of another cut In the metal market and rumors of cut3 In the dividends of several of the subsidiary companies of the Amalgamated Copper company was the chief bearish factor. The railroad list also (showed some depreciation in comparison with Saturdays closing t'.gures. Union racine declined a point and ono half; St. Paul one point; the Hill shares about a point and one half and Heading ono point. The market was almost stagnant at times. The entire dealings were confined almost exclusively to the above named etocks. The brt-ak in tho grain markets at Chicago should have given some impetus to bull operators, but this factor was ignored. The market seems unable to extract Itself from the rut Into which it has fallen. During the past ten days stocks have not varied over three points from top to bottom. This lethargic condition will not induce outside speculation, therefore tho professional element have the market to themselves. Money conditions aro not altogether (satisfactory although call loans can be Viad at reasonable rates, but long time loans are still being made at 7 per ce.nt. The demand for the New York City bonds continue good and at a higher range of prices. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET Descp. Atchison . . . Am. Sugar Am. Car ... Amal. Cop. Am. Smelt . . Am. Locom Anaconda . . WHEAT Bearish Influences predominated In tho wheat pit at the opening, as a consequence a reaction was in order. May wheat sold off from 107 to 106, while the December sold down from 101 to 100. There were various influences to cause the weakness, chief among them were the lower foreign markets; Liverpool opening three-quarter of a penny lower and closing almost a penny under Saturday's figures. Weather conditions In the northwest were more favorable than expected; severe frosts were predicted for the extreme northwest, but they failed to materialize. Reports from that section of the country, however, are not very encouraging, the crop being backward and a frost at the present time would retard it still farther. Statistics throughout the day were rather bearish. The receipts of new grain at this market being 239 cars; estimates for tomorrow still larger. Arrivals of new grain at all primary points larger than a year ago. On the decline a fair export was reported. New York is said to have sold about 2 50,000 bushels of wheat to exporters while an urgent demand is reported for the red winter wheat from export houses with southwestern connections. The market did not show any rallying rower despite this Influence, closing within a fraction of the lowest prices of the session. CORN With the receipts of corn here today over 1,200 cars, the bulls became entirely dishearted and threw over long corn regardless of values. The May sold off from 53 to 56. with the largest pit traders arrayed on the selling side. The failure of frost predictions in the northern portion of Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota added to the already dejected bull contingent. Tho estimated arrivals for tomorrow are again liberal, it looks as if the farmers are satisfied with crop conditions and are willing to market their old corn at those fancy prices. Crop con

dition In the south west are more reassuring, ail that is required to make the crop doubly sure is a continuation of the present growing weather. The market closed with a weak undertone. OATS Sold off a cent a bushel in sympathy with the weakness in other pits and the general feeling that a reaction was in order. St. Louis reported the arrival of about forty cars of new oats from Nebraska, which graded number three white, this from a section whera the green bug pest worked all summer. The market closed steady. PRODUCE MARKET. Sumo dissension among local trading interests over Metro, dividend report. ed. Some concessions in steel prices re ported as mills are operating to full capacity. Thirty railroads for second week in September show average gross increase $9,133 9.35 per cent. Duns Review says some caution in Eastern cities but mercantile collec tlons are more prompt. The strength of the new City bond issue is very noticeable and we should not be at all surprised but this will strengthen some other quarters. We are rather optimistic on tne situation in general and advise purchases of all good dividend paying railroads and the better class of industrials. Marshall Spader We do not expt-ct the Improved tone of the security list to be followed by active speculative effort or important advances In tho Immediate future. There is no doubt but what Morgan, Hill and Harriman are working together for higher prices. We are in a splendid trading market with the trend upward. Mclntyro & Co. On any further reaction we feel that the active railways may be purchased for a turn though there is nothing to indicate any sharp upward movement. The market was very quiet Saturday but prices showed a firmer tendency. The bank statement was good taking into consideration the large payments for bonds made lately. ' Logan & Ityan To our minds wo are reaching a level where conservatism should be exercised when making commitments on the long side as the bear element Is still very aggressive and tha public Interest not of a very large extent. It was announced today that Hill and Harriman are raising freight rates in the Northwest on eastern bound freight over their lines. Subject to normal reactions as explained in recent letters, the market is going considerably higher. A. O. Brown & Co. The heavy export sales of grain recently have given rise to predictions of gold Imports in the near future and as government deposits will probably increase very materially the money situation should ry decidedly easier very soon. General conditions seem to favor moderate improvement in prices. It seems to-me that we have had rally enough for the present. I have felt for two weeks that railroad stocks have been purchase on all drives because the weakly held stocks had been very thoroughly liquidated and that the short interest was too large, this latter interest has been radIcallly reduced and this Is shown In the loan department more anxiety to lend stocks than has been apparent for some time. While I am bullish for a long pull, I would not buy stocks except on good breaks. Saturday's market passed under the influence of certain Items in the news not distinctly favorable among which may be noted the postponement of the Anaconda dividend meeting and further evidence of the effect of demoralizing condition of the copper metal trade In the curtailment of production by other companies than the Amalgamated. It Is proper to state also that the Standard Oil hearing is being conducted on lines which look radical even if authorized by law and Justified by facts. It will be re-called that much of the recent strength to the market waa secured under the leadership of Northern Pacific and rumors i increased distribution, etc There is j lss talk about this and the stock ap- ( pears more plentiful at the advance. (Saturday's market, however, was dull i . , ' i -"'- " "tuiug ana Jersey-Central statements combined to make good reading for holders of the Reading stock. In this connection it appears that a serious' threat to activities, particularly in the west, lies in the possible shortage of coal this winter. The Union Pacific holding company rumor is again on duty and "while not taken seriously, it has undoubtedly some believers in the plan being finally adopted by Union Pacific management. This mornings news states that Judge Logbren of the Federal Court In St, Paul has enjoined the railroad commission of Minnesota from enforcing commodity rates ordered by the commission. He does not enjoin the commission from enforcing twocent pascasr rates now In effect. The News Item does not state that th commodity rates are not In effect tiiroxiarh tho Reading of the dispatch would carry this conclusion.
