had very much of a Saturday's appearances. Tins usual dullness which prevades the market upon Saturday i -re-vailed. The tone, however, va a sh.id firmer with the standard rails, showing Wlight gains over yesterday's closing figures. Union Pacific advanced to 131; St. Paul, to 122; Heading 97; N-w York Central 107, and the. balance of the active list relatively about a point. The industrial shares were also in a better mood. The belief that the worst Is known In the metal world and that the current prices both for Smelters and Amalgamated copper discounts any further depressing disclosures. Sentiment upon both of these issues displays a better feeling and with any degree of strength throughout the general market it is thought that these two Industrials would be the first to respond to any pronounced upward movement. The traction shares enjoyed a slight Loom due In the main to covering by shorts. Brooklyn advanced a point and one-half and Interborough one point. There was nothing In the way of news to stimulate buying pressure; It seemil more of a professional character than otherwise. The bank statement was a fair document; a little better than generally expected, but it gave slight impetus to traders. The market as a whole closed with. a firm undertone; what gains that were established were retained up to the closing hour.

CHICAGO LETTER. Chicago, Sept. 21. WHEAT Had a range of about a cent a bushel, the May selling at 10S and back to 107 U. The principal bull card was the continued bad reports from the Canadian northwest. Telegrams from the Da
kota report too much moisture which will delay the crop about ten days; the wheat sprouting in the shock and badly discolored. Minneapolis was a large buyer of futures in this market taking over 400.000 December, this was a hedge against large sales of flour for export. The foreign demand for . our wheat and Hour is reported extremely strong; this factor has been the bullish influence throughout the week and gives the market a technically strong undertone. Some of the best posted houses in the trade are Quoted as very bullish upon the market. Bartlett, Frailer & Co., say. "This advance In our opinion is only the. beginning. The international situation is not discounted by any means dollar wheat." Prtngle F. & It: "Wo expect to sc.- higher prices for wheat and when any reaction occurs, wheat Is a purchase." Tht market closed fairly strong although rather dull. CORN Ruled strong ar.d higher la sympathy with the firmness in wheat and the reports of frosts In the northern pprtlon of Iowa and southern Minnesota. May corn sold up to 60 cents and back to 53 Trade more or less professional. Cash demand continues flr. OATS Followed the trend of other grain pits within narrow limits. Tha abnormally high prices for this cereal has checked exports temporarily at least. The market closed steady.
There Is more Inquiry from Europe for securities, which may In time have some influence xipon values here.
Colorado Southern second week September. 299,414; Increase. 59,491. From July 1st, 2,S64,120; Increase, 224,-6T5.
An early sale of New York City bonds at the new high prices of 106 1 had some Influence on general sentiment.
We look for a very quiet market for some time to come, but we rather feel that stocks on any reaction can be bought.
I heard this morning that copper metal sold more freely yesterday and the price touched bottom. Look for quiet market with sustained prices.
There is very little that can be said on. the general situation, the financial situation seems to be improving a
little and tomorrow's bank statement
is expected to bo a fair document.

At the opening the market was quiet and firm. Trading sentiment was fairly bullish with about the usual exceptions. It was thought, however.
that the market was likely to be tested with profit taking sales, and
prof essionales were cautious.
