NEW YORK LETTER. New York, Sept. 20. The behaviour 01" Amalgamated and ether copper fchares indicatu that the situation in thj copper industry is sdowiy righting itself. One factor which may have considerable weight in a week or so is the relief offend the banks, owing to the paying off of loans niadu to the large copper producers. If the buying power enlarges there will 1 a material reduction in the amount of loans outstanding. There is a heavy short interest in Amalgamated and it is believed, such stock as New York Central, Union I'acinc. the Hill sh'trea and one or two of the higher priced rails are greatly oversold. Kotno of the ino-st conservative people &ro now advising their clients to make inodi-rato purchases of the standard rails. This udvice has been given by sonio of the larger investment hou6es and applies to. the sort of stock that wealthy men own. There has been excellent buying today of the New York City bonds, which, sold at four points higher than the average rate pa hi to the city. The outlook is for a fairly reassuring bank statement. CHICAGO LETTER. WHEAT scorced an advance of 2 Under the formidable array of bullish news although there was not a large general public trade there was some expansion in business and general Interest. Foreign markets all higher and it was claimed that practically all the wheat offered abroad last night was accepted. There were reiteration of claims of disaster to the Canadian crop. Claims were made that the export sales today aggregated 100 loads, responsible Arms confirming seventy loads, but most exporters claim that today's advance has shut out much business although Kurope had previously been disposed to follow advances In ocean freights, cash premiums and market advances. Cash sales 25.000. COUN scored a gdod advance mainly on frost predictions for Nebraska the northwest and the northern part of Iowa and Wisconsin. Shorts covered and there was much miscellaneous investment. The advance has shut off export and eastern shipping business, but competition between elevators and local industrials advanced cash corn 2 cents in simple market cash sales 125.000 seaboard none. OATS were subject to much the same Influences as other grains. Yesterdays important buying was reinforced byfurther buying today, emphasizing the stringency in the market which despite the increased activity was a small one. Cash sales 100,000. Eastern shippers balked at the bulge. Further liquidation of October contract shippers put pressure on January product, offset by new investment buying of January. Some covering by shorts and some buying of October product by the packers who sold distant months. Grain strength herped the market. rnourrcE market. Chapman bought 3,000 Reading at 1-S. Very good buying In Union Pacific. Looks higher. On declines would buy Union, Northern Pacific and Reading. E. R. Chapman bought 10,000 Morrison, C. D. Barney also bought. Wolf Bros. sold. Cnapin. Nothing new since yesterday. Think it will be a trader's market which can be bought on all recessions. Private advices state that J. P. Morgan & Co., have taken over 60,000 Union Pacific from Kuhn, Loeb & Co. supposed to be owned by II. II. Rogers. The situation at large seems to be on the mend, especially in financial cirC. H. cles, and we rather advise the lung side of :.he market especially on any fair recessions.
Bullish specialty operators seem likely today following the natural reaction yesterday from the early bulging and subsequent to the quiet induced by the Jewish holiday. Some believe that short covering was due to the recovery, but it did not look that way, as a good many issues were still depressed especially heavy were the Steels and Copper. Atchison earnings of last year continue to grow and that since tae beginning of the present period the earnings of the road have increased approximately $3,000,000 gross. Am told by best posted party that Great Northern Preferred will go on S per cent dividend basis on Oct 3, and Northern Pacific on same basis Oct. 4. This comes from a close friend of J. J. Hill. One of the most interesting tumors on the floors is that J. 1'. Morgan & Co. had taken over about 60,000 shares of Union Pacific belonging to II. II. Rogers through the agency of Kuhn, Loco li Company. A. O. Brown & Co. The declaration of the regular dividend on N. Y. Central appeared to have no influence but there is no doubt that a reduction in the rate would have precipitated considerable fresh selling. Dividend Philadelphia The Reading company delcared the usual semiannual dividend of 2 per cent on its second preferred stock payable Nov. 9 to stock of record Oct. 22. The annual report was approved by the directors. There has geen a very strong impression held by people In the financial district whose opinions are worthy of consideration that for several months the Morgan house has been accumulating Union Pacific stock and that it now has very substantial holdings of this security. T. A. Mclntyre & Co. eay The technical position of the market has been improved by renewed short selling today and on any further reaction good dividend payers should be a purchase for a turn particularly the better class of railroads which show greater reslstency. Buy Rock Island Preferred and Collateral bonds; the same quantity of each. You will be able to carry them and get 3 per cent per annum right now, but the Preferred will pay 4 per cent In January and the speculative possibility ' will '..show- ypu; 59 per cent on the investment. Morgan buying Great Northern Socalled Morgan houses were given a good deal of prominence in early buying of Great Northern Preferred. Some of the traders sold on their appearance arguing that if the pool wished to take profits that would be the obvious way to stimulate outside buying. By thla time everybody should realize that there will be a reduction in the Copper dividends and no one can look for more than about half of the present dividend on either Anaconda, or Amalgamated, but even on this basis, we believe that the stocks have some value and good speculative fluctuations should result. Buy stocks conservatively on all reactions. You know the issues we have been recommending: Union Pacific, Reading, Brooklyn, Hill roads. Southern Pacific, Amalgamated, etc. We also think that N. Y. C. and Pennsylvania will gradually improve. The railroad equipment shares are on the bargi.!n counter. Ridgely. We would not if in the daily trading position ignore fair returns on either side of the stock market for it is still highly professional and as such subject to sudden changes of a superficial character while at the same time is may be undergoing convalescence as we believe it now is. The railroads are still to be preferred on recessions as purchases. Pullman Co. From all that can be gathered here the Pullman company is not engaged In the wholesale discharge of employes. The facts are these. Business is assuming normal conditions compared with the abnormal state of affairs some months ago. The company had about 10,500 employes on the payrolls in its shops early in the year which was the largest number on record. The news this morning was rather depressing for the speculative element, and the opinion prevailed, that stocks would go lower, and quite a number of telling orders were in evidence at the opening, but it soon developed that some one who is in a better position to see the improvement was buying stocks, especially Union Pacific, and with this issue the entire list sympathized after a while, and gains of one to three per cent scored before the day was over. From general observation and following the progress of the Western railroads, I notice that Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul building the extension to the Coast, in face of rcdu?ed net earnings, and a much higher cost for railroad building than ever before in the history of railroad building, the returns from new investments will be almost i.il for years to somev and comparing such with the results of roads supposed to run parallel like Northern Pacifie, we think Northern Pacific i.evr issue will sell higher than St Paul and we think it is a very' good proposition to buy this New Northern Paci2c stock and Sell St. Paul.
