The Martha society of the First Christian church met yesterday with Mrs. M. AY. Schneider at her home on. Calumet avenvie. The meeting was the regular weekly one and business of importance was discussed after which the afternoon was spent socially and nref reshments were served. The meetting was quite well attended. PA The Hammond Woman's Club will have Its opening meeting tomorrow afternoon at 3 o"clock in the K. of P. halL The members will meet to observe '"president's day" and a very enjoyable afternoon is anticipated. A short literary program will include several readings by Miss Mayfa Haines of - Chicago. The program will bo in charge of Mrs. E. F. Johnston. Mrs. Dave Johnson very pleasantly entertained the members of the Fern Leaf club yesterday at her home in South Hohman street. Cards were played during the afternoon, after which the hostess served delicious refreshments. The twelve members of. the club were present. The club will meet next week with Mrs. Frank Summers at her home In Condit street. The wedding of Miss Anna Kanow to John Murray took place yesterday morning at 7 o'clock at All Saints' Catholic church. Tho ceremony was performed by the Rev. Edward F. Barrett. The bride was attended by Miss Helen Fitzgerald of Chicago and Mr. Neill of Chicago acted as best man. The bride wore a beautiful gown of tan crepe de china and wore a large black picture hat. The wedding was a very quiet one, only the relatives and near friends of the couple being present. Both young people are well known In Hammond and their friends wish them all happiness. The members of the Fleur de Lis club spent a very pleasant afternoon yesterday at the home of Mrs. Murray in State street. The afternoon was devoted to cards, after which a dainty luncheon was served. The prizes were won by Mesdames Seeley and J. Huber. The club will meet again in two weeks at the home of Mrs. Osborn in Plummer avenue. The members of the club who were present yesterday are: Mesdames Seeley, Charles Luthman, John Huber. Kralowitz. Osborn, H. Green, J. Schaadt, Keyser, Boyle, Van dermark, Scott, Webber and Murray. Miss Katherine Shane very pleasantly entertained a few of her friends last evening at her home in Sibley street. Various games were enjoyed during the evening among them a guessing contest. "A Penny for Your Thoughts," at which Miss Grace Gero won the prize. Several pretty musi cal numbers were given during the evening by the guests present, after which a luncheon was served. Miss Shane's guests were: Misses Grace Gero, Dollie Geib, Helen Brown, Edith Bradt, Edith Carter and Muriel Eastwood. Messrs. Paul Mastellar, Claude Palmer, Charles Delaney, Harry Harris. Unless something turns up that is now not looked for the greater part of the city administration will accept L J.Myer's offer to accompany him over tho route of the proposed and partly built Chicago & South Bend Interurban road tomorrow. The party will leave Hammond on the Michigan Cen tral at 1:54 in the afternoon and go to Gary where the work of the new railway can be seen to advantage. Taking the Lake Shore, the officials will go to LaPorte from where they will go with the new company's own cars to Michigan City to inspect what has already been built of the power house. Going back over the route the party will take the Lake Shore again to LaPorte. and from there to South Bend. The company will be the guest of Mr. Meyer for the Sunday. ATTACK JAILER'S WIFE; ESCAPE. Two Prisoners Gain Liberty at Laporte, but Woman Prevent Others from Getting A-rray. Laporte, Ind.. Sept. 19. Arthur Curnmings and John Edwards knocked Mrs. Albert Smutzer, wife of Sheriff Smutzer. when she entered the jail tonight to give a drink of water to a sick prisoner, and' escaped. Though injured by the blow, Mrs. Smutzer managed to prevent eleven other pris oners from gaining their liberty by locking the first cell door. She then called for help, but the fugitives were

The Absence of Witnesses Cause Slot Machine Prosecutions to Go Over. Two slot machine cases against Mat Dombrowski and Charles Huwig, East Chicago saloon keepers, were continued in Judge W. W. McMahon's court this morning until Sept. 21 and 25, respectively. Mrs. Dombrowski, who was to have been a witness in her husband's case, was taken seriously sick since the raid made last Tuesday. Owing to the ab sence of several witnesses in the Huwig case, it will not be tried until tomorrow morning. The slot machine war that is now on n East Chicago is a result of a fight between a syndicate that is largely backed by Hammond capital, and a few saloon keepers who installed slot machines in their places wunout ui consent of the syndicate. I lie synaiate opened war on the private mabine holders some time ngo with the result tnat several maenmes were put out of business. In the mean time the latter planned their revenge by takng the legal course with the result that the syndicate machines were tem porarily confiscated and their holders made to appear in court on the charge of having violated the liquor license law. DECIDE UPON PAVING Michigan Ave. Macadamized From Calumet to Columbia Other Work. Through the board of public works' resolution this morning to macadamize Michigan avenue from Calumet avenue to Columbia avenue, Hammond Is as sured of a good and much needed thoroughfare. . The resolution as passed this morning provides for a thirty foot macadam. At this morning's session a resolution was also passed which pro vides for the paving of Hanover street from Hohman to Fisher. A cement sidewalk is also provided here in the resolution. t The Erie railraod sidewalk construc tion gang arrived this morning in Hammond, after the board had made repeated requests upon the company. Work on the construction was begun on Sohl street and will be carried to Douglas street. The contract for sidewalk construc tion in Walter, Claude and Alice streets was awarded to William Ahlborn. . The order for a brick pavement in Sohl street wa3 rescinded by a general vote this moriilng. Resolutions -were passed providing for local sewer improvements in East Con dit street, from Hohman to Lyman streets and also for a local sewer in Mason street, from Ilohman street to state line. PERSONALS. Harry Grayland of West Hammond reported to the .Hammond police this morning that his clothe3 had been stolen from a work car. Robert Rereron of Chicago was picked up this morning at the corner of State and Hohman streets suffering from a severe case of delirium tremens B. L P. Bell, who has been spend ing the greater part of the summer In tha neighborhood of his cottage at Lake Winnebago, Wis., returned to Hammond yesterday morning. On his return trip Mr. Bell made several lengthy stops. Charles Jaeger of West Hammond, who had occasion to drive to Hammond this afternoon and not being acquainted with the street regulations left his horse tied at the corner of State and Hohman street while he stepped into a saloon. It being against the city ordinance to leave any horse untied in the streets, Jaeger was promptly arrested and his case set for trial tomorrow. The case of Frank Lulu was tried this afternoon before Judge McMahon Before the case progressed to any length the defendant's attorney asked that he be submitted to an examina tion for his sanity. Rrs. Sharrer and Chldlaw, who acted in the roel of alien lsts reported to the court that in their estimation the man was sound of mind but that he seemed to be suffering from too much hard drinking. After this report the sase was taken up again. OLD RESIDENT DIES. One of Hammond's eldest residents Mrs. William Guthrie, died this morn ing at 7 o'clock at the home of her grand-daughter, Mrs. Belle Bardens. The funeral will be held tomorrow at D o'clock from the residence, 240 Hoffman street. 'Mrs. Guthrie is survived by three sons, J. B. Guthrie of Ravenswood, William Guthrie of Chicago, and Robert Guthrie of Ocean Springs, Miss $100 EEWAED, $100. Little Joseph Murphy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Murphy, of New York avenue, was taken to the Mercy hos pital yesterday. The little fellow was examined by six doctors, -and It was found that he is suffering with spinal meningitis. His illness has been a source of much worry to his parents and under the care of Dr. Morgan, a specialist, at tho hospital, it is hoped his recovery will be speedy.
