Mrs. Durbin S. Benedict has gone to Indianapolis, Greenoastle and Einsdale, Ind., for a visit with relatives. Mrs. Carringer of New York avenue loft yesterday for Colorado, where she was called by the serious Illness of her eister. John Schaub will "leave for Ann 'Arbor, Mich., Monday, where he will take a course In civil engineering at the University of Michigan. The Christian church will hold prayr meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Thorpe of New York avenue. The leader will be Mr. G. E. llth. G. W. Humphreys, who injured his eye In an accident in Chicago Is Improving, but not yet able to resume Lis duties at the Standard Oil Co. Fred Brett and Miss Elizabeth Peterhausel, Mrs. Twitt's guests of Clevland. O., saw "The Girl Bangers" at the Auditorium in Chicago yesterday afternoon. Steve Rozek was arrested on suspicion by OlYioerPInkerton, when found loitering around on Center street at 4 o'clock in the morning. He was arraigned before the Mayor and given ten iuinutes to leave town. Golden Star Rebekah lodge No. 452 held a very pleasant session last evening. After, the business was disposed of delicious refreshments were served. The members decided to have a picnic at Robertsdale park Friday, Sept. 20, and In the Odd Fellow's hall. Whiting people were shocked this morning to receive word of the death ot Mrs. G. W. Humphreys of Flschrupp avenue. Mrs. Humphreys was taken to a Chicago hospital for an operation which was the Immediate cause of her death. The remains will be brought to Whiting, but funeral arrangements have not yet been made. LOWELL NEWS Mrs. Charley Fisher, .who has been very seriously sick, is reported as improving. Miss Dora DeWitt, has accepted a position In a mercantile establishment at Hebron. Charley Hufnagle has purchased A. L. Roger's Interests in the wagon making and paint shops. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Baughman left Wednesday for an extended visit with New Hampshire relatives. William Kobelln sr., and two daughters. Miss Carrie, and Mrs. A. J. Pattee visited his daughter, Mrs. Starke at 6t. John, Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. William Kobelln jr., who were called here to attend the funeral of his mother, returned to their home In Belvldere, la., Wednesday. Peter Angelo has gone to Chicago where he haa a position looking after the premises of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Morgan, who will soon depart for Mexico, where they expect to spend the vlnter. C, visited at the home of his cousin, Attorney D. E. Kelly, and family, yes terday. Mrs. Vesta Meader Skanks of this city, was quietly married in Chicago yesterday to Henry Lee Van Cleave, a prominent business man of Super ior, Wis. Purnett Bronson, an old resident of this city, died this morning at 9 o'clock of paralysis. The deceased had been an Invalid for a number of years. He served all through the civil war and was for anumber of years commander oi xne tj. iv. u. post or this city. He was 67 years old and leaves a wife, two daughters, Mrs. Florence Johnson of East Chicago, and Miss Mary Bronon of this city, and one son, Ralph Bronson, of Chicago. The cabbage market has gone down from 10 to 9 and continues going down gradually. Walter Krooswyk has been on the sick list but is reported to be rapidly improving. Mr. De Huis of Lansing shipped an average of four to five cars a day for a week straight. The next Joint institute of North and Calumet townships will be held In Toleston Saturday, Sept. 28. Corn in this part of the county Is getting along nicely and needs but a week or two more of nice weather to mature. Richard Nomes visited Peter Molenaar today and returned to his home In West Pullman with a basket of lus clos grapes and some melons. The farmers claim that the W. Bar nard seeds are bringing good results this year and Insist on thanking the canvasser, P. Molenaar, Jr., in a way for the success. Saxony school did not begin until Tuesday on account of the late ar rival of the seats. The new four room school building and the grounds which surround It are alike beautl ful and Saxony is very proud In tho possession of It. The Holland Christian Reform church held opening exercises in the new parochial school In Munster yes terday and the attendance was large. Spauldlng & Co. for athletic supplies. ST. JOHNS NEWS Henry Sortzrlch from Chicago, was a St. John business visitor Wednesday. George Stark's house was struck by a thunder bolt Wednesday night, but no damage was done. Miss Annie Soelker returned from Hammond Wednesday evening, where she visited since Sunday. The barn on the Huseman's farm, southwest of St. John was struck by lightning Wednesday night. Nick Bohr from Chicago, Is hre visiting friends and relatives. While here he will make different repairs on his farm. Mesdames Peter and Alois Portz. and Messrs. Frank Stark. Peter and Alois Porta were Crown Point visitors Wednesday. An engine and a car were run off the tracks near Hartsdale Wednesday night. The wrecking crew and the section men were obliged to work In the heavy storm during the entire night, and it took them until morning before they had finished their work. On account of the heavy rains and storms, many people took a lay off yesterday, as they could not do any work. They related their experience of the previous night to each other and it waa found that almost all of the people started out of their beds the same moment, when three unusually loud thunderbolts followed each other In qnick succession.
