Alderman John Derpa making preparations this wtk to attend the annual meeting of the Polish National Alliance of America which will be held at Baltimore beginning Sfpt. 23. In an Interview with a Times reporter this morning Dorpa said: "Now that Ster.Bland has been refused a pardon by the pardon board at Joliet, I do not think we will ;0 much in regard to hU east;. Should the pardon board have taken the matter of his pardon under serious consideration, we would have fought It to a finish." Residents in the vicinity of 9028 Erie avenue this morning complained to the police regarding the unsanitary conditions that prevail In this district. Frank Thompson alleges that two dogs haye been burled In front yards within the last two months and the odor that Issues from the lots Is unbearable. The sewer he also alleges, refuses to carry th waste from the basins .which are ir an awful condition. According to Thompson's allegations, conditions through the district are worse than In the dirtiest part of the Chicago Ghetto district. BLACK EYE FOR CHARTER. South Chicago, Sept. 17 According to the political wiseacres the charter is being given a black eye In many precincts through the eighth ward. As near as can be gathered the following is the character of the vote being cast in the various precincts today: Precinct No. 1 Light vote, about von. Precince No. 7 Heavy vote, about even. Precinct No. 8 Heavy vote against the charter. Precinct No. 14 Medium, even. Precinct No. 15 Heavy, against the charter. Precinct No. 17 Light, against. "Precinct N. 21 Medium, about even. Withholds Verdict. At the Inquest held yesterday afternoon over the body of William Rowan, the coroner withheld his verdict xintll Friday in order that the death might be more fully Investigated. A policeman happened to come along the street and the two men ran down the alley, where-they resumed their f-ght, one of tnem fell exhausted and the other man ran away. People witnessing the fight took the man to a saloon, where he was given some whisky and he soon revived. The police are looking for the other man. The man's name that wa3 beaten up Is Fnank Polenson and he lives In Buffalo, N. T.

A little grey squirrel made its ap pearance on Calumet Heights yesterday afternoon, the first squirrel seen there abouts In several year3, it Is said. It was a wild little fellow and nobody could get near it. After being in the tree about an hour It scampered down and ran into a clump of bushes and was lost from the crowd. Mrs. McGregory of South Haven, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Ludwig of Seventy-fifth place during the summer, has returned li imp. Mr. Ludwig accompanied her mother to South Haven and will remain there several weeks. Miss Bessie Beyer of Seventy-sixth street, has gone to Jacksonville, 111., to attend the Woman's College during the coming year. Miss Beyer will make a specialty of vocal and Instrumental music, dramatic art and languages. Miss Grace Darling, formerly of Hyde Park, and a teacher In the South Chicago high school, has returned from an extended trip through Europe and is now living at the home of Miss N. Lard, Seventy-seventh street and Bond avenue. While in Europe Miss Darling visited the Seandanavian peninsula, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, France and the British Isles. In a few weeks Miss Darling will begin a settlement in the poorer districts of Soutli Chicago and will then live in South Chicago. WEST PULLMAN N. E. Michael and daughter, Edith, of Hammond, are the guests of John Wheeler and wife. Miss Catherine Pinter has gone to Crown Point to visit relatives for several days. Rev. Robert Beer and S. L. Finnery left this afternoon for Wlnamac to attend the meeting of the Logansport Presbytery. Miss Ella Schroeder, who has been visiting at the home of Jacob Pinter and family, returned to her home in Crown Point this morning. The city directory, soon to be is sued, gives Valparaiso a population of 9,09i. Vet Chester died at his home in this city last night after an illness of two years. He was an old fireman and was injured while driving a fire wagon two years ago, receiving Injuries which terminated in his death. He was 52 years of age and leaves a wife and daughter. The funeral will be held Wednesday from the Christian church Misses' Lillian and Myrtle Pinter are spending the week with relatives at Hammond and Chicago. John W. Wood, former resident of this city, died in Chicago Saturday afternoon. Deceased was born in Lake county in 1S38, and came to Valparaiso in 1S62. He was engaged in the gro cery business in this city for over thirty-five years. The remains were brought here yesterday morning and the funeral will be held this afternoon. Mrs. L. P.
